Thinking of getting a laptop, anyone here have suggestions - MT4

Posted: Mar 21, 2012

I am thinking a nice fast one with a bigger screen.  Does anyone manage to do well on this with DocQscribe and can you type anywhere?  I would love to be away from the same old desk and would like to be able to move around, perhaps even sit on my porch if I can.  Is this way out there or is it possible.  If some of you do it, I am going to go for it when I have about 300.00 saved... Thanks in advance for feedback. I sure hope this is a solution to being chained to the same desk!

You should be able to work anywhere - since you are logging into

DocQscribe to type, its not like you'll be dragging a phone around with you, unlike another place I worked for where we had a huge dictaphone to dial into.

I would think as long as you got a place to plug your foot pedal into the laptop and your headsets, you'll be all set. Just login to DoQscribe and go to work.

I worked with a lady that used her laptop when I worked for a hospital and we had dictaphones and she would travel with her laptop and dictaphone and work when she was away from home etc.

First, you should get a computer requirement list from your employer. They can probably give you the place to go in your work to print off the list yourself. Quite important to know if your work is compatible with XP, Windows 7 which I have, or Vista. Also 32 and 64 bit is very important to know, as my Windows 7 is not compatible to one of my accounts because of the 32/64 thing. When you look for a computer this will be listed on the computer. Also Word 10 is sometimes a little difficult at first but you will get utsed to it. But the Windows 7 mostly come with the starter Word 10 and you might have to buy the complete version of 10 to make things work, and that can run about $200 unless you can find it on Ebay or something.

Another thing is to get the biggest screen you can afford, but at least a 17 inch. You have to have one with enough USB ports to handle your wireless mouse (which I prefer over the touchpad on the laptop), your foot pedal, and possibly an external regular keyboard (which a lot use). So one that has maybe 4 ports will be sufficient.

Depending on where you live, ask your internet provider a wireless cable box (easy to switch out for the one you have), and that way you will be wireless anywhere in your house. Or you can get an external router and it is easily set up on your computers so you can move around.

You will also be able to take your laptop on vacation and use in hotels or any of thousands of places that have WiFI connections. I used to go to a warm climate for the winter and used my laptop. Or take it with to your relatives that have high speed or cable internet access and you are able to work there, too.

I do find that I can work faster on my regular desktop computer, but I guess if I put my keyboard on the laptop that might help.

I bought Word 2010 from Microsoft for $150 - was more at Walmart.

This is really something to look forward to, thank you. Yes, I work for M*Modal which is why I asked here. This is really great. I will still leave my desktop one here, in case I want to switch, but this will certainly make things more interesting for the job. I am looking forward to picking one out when I get paid again! Thanks so much. This put a spring in my step today :). PS: Thanks also for taking time to post all the stats for things I would not think about like wireless mouse and USB ports. I do have a gadget with 1 USB port that gives a computer 5 more USB ports, so I guess I will be okay there. And the 150.00 sounds great too! Thanks again. :)

I didn't closely read all the responses, but I often travel with my husband and work on a laptop. The biggest issue for me is the keyboard. I pack my keyboard and take it with me because I can't work on laptop keyboards!

actually if you call IT - they will tell you exactly what to get

Okay, I should have checked all this out before I bought a new computer, I know.  But I didn't and now I am paying for it. My company's software is not compatible with Windows 7 and that's what my new computer installed on it.  I have learned that I can take it to a local repair store and have the XP installed on it and the Word 2003, but then I found out from my employer's IT guy that a 64-bit computer is also not compatible.  Geesh!  Anything else I sho ...
