I think every MT who is subjected to sitting and waiting for work that is not there should be paid for stand-by time. Who do these criminals think they are that they can continue to use people like pawns. If absolutely everybody would submit an invoice for all the idle hours spent waiting for work, it would bankrupt them.

I researched the law extensively. If we were in house, we would be paid stand-by time. But, remote workers don't have to be paid stand-by time.

Employees in other remote industries aren't demanded to stay chained to their computers waiting for work, either. I have a friend that does customer service work from home for a big company here in town and when there are no calls or if it's a slow day, she logs off and goes about her day. None of this ridiculous 6-minute waiting, "Remedy ticket" nonsense. I told her about all of our requirements, restrictions, policies and guidelines we have to follow when we run out of work and she was beside herself. She said not in a MILLION YEARS would she ever put up with that.

So ... no. Maybe we're not being paid while we're waiting for work but we ARE being demanded to stay chained to our desk for those ridiculous 5-1/2 minute waits while the jobs roll in one at a time.

Yesterday, for 3 solid hours I did nothing but 20-30 second progress notes, 5-1/2 minutes apart. In those 3 hours I don't even think I earned $10. It's the most ridiculous policy I've ever heard of, from ANY company on earth.

I would have fudged that 5-1/2 minutes and rounded up to 6 - sm

Just like Obamacare, they took advantage of the law and requirements by cutting hours back for some people.

If they really had a heart, they would pay stand-by time along with better scheduling, and they would not have cut hours for some people so they do not have to pay anything towards health insurance. With such low wages, though, I qualify for state aid, and my wages are even low enough not to have to pay a co-pay. I would be much happier if I earned enough to get my own insurance, and have money left over to live on.

I don't understand all the complaints about standby time. You wait 6 minutes, fill out a remedy ticket, and you have the choice of making up the time anytime during that day without supervisor approval, or you can use PTO, or make up time later in the week with supervisor approval. Why are you all sitting there watching a computer screen? I've watched movies while checking every so often for jobs, given myself a mani-pedi, made phone calls, cleaned the house, worked out, etc. Thanksgiving Day I too ran out of work, so I did prep for my side dishes, spent time with family, and played a game of cards while waiting for work. I spent time with my family and I worked. It wasn't perfect but I wasn't chained to my computer and my family understood it would be a working holiday. My parents got to spend some quality time with my children without me hovering around and they loved it. It is what you make of it, and I struggle to believe that anybody with a history in the industry didn't know we would run into a NJA situation through this weekend (and it'll happen at Christmas and New Years too).

Can you make up the time "without supervisor approval?" I thought you had to check the Swap Board,claim a time period and get supervisor approval.

If you run out of work, you can make it up any time before midnight of the same day withOUT supervisor approval. If you want to make it up another day, you must speak to your scheduling manager POD person to schedule a day and time that works for you both. OR you can take PTO so you don't lose pay. OR you can take excused absence/no pay if you don't really need the pay.

If I run out of work during my shift, I'm jumping on and working when it's convenient for ME and too bad if it doesn't work for them. This "you must get permission from the scheduling manager but if she's not available you must get permission from your team leader and if she's not available call work flow" crap isn't going to happen.

You go girl!, don't work for Nuance, retiring but hospital system has been outsourced...wouldn't it be a beautiful thing if everyone stopped working for a couple of days and let them deal with the doctor complaints.. you can dream.

I know supervisors are overworked also in this field, but I wish supervisors would stand up for their workers. Start communicating w/your MTs/Editors and Go to your higher ups and enlighten them on a few things - simply relay information to them but first you have to get it. It would benefit us both greatly. Everywhere I have worked, supervisors only communicate 1-way. They don't seek input, return e-mails, etc. I guess if your at home your out-of-site and ...

I know the job market for MTs is not like it used to be, but I am an ex hospital employee who lost her job to the big NuISance, too. If they continue to get good MTs for a pittance, they'll keep up their monopolystic tactics. In the time I worked for them, they ate up Transcend, WebMedEx, and Accentus (which was about the last company offering decent benefits, based in Canada). If they can't get good MTs, they'll have to mend their ways, but as long as their door keeps revolving, ...

as of 07/24 we all started on our "new" pay scales. I started work this morning, first thing I checked was my stats and I have THREE critical errors and the dreaded e-mailing that I failed audit... my first ding is on a verbatim report: X-Fix corrected to ex-fix. Now, I know that there is the Biomet X-fix device and that ex-fix is short for external fixator, but since at the beginning the doc refers to Biomet, I chose X-fix. Here's the bottom line, colleagues. We're getting paid exactly what we deserve because we don't have the basic fortitude to stop it. Just had an audit - first one in months. Got a 99%+ but apparently I am sending too much work through to the hospital with blanks and I need to send more reports to QA. Told them I would send more if they did not penalize me financially for doing so. These accounts are the worst by far that I have ever done in over 40 years and I am not prone to hyperbole.
