Sit/stand workstations - TerriA
Posted: Feb 18, 2013
I have a herniated cervical disk, and sitting exacerbates my pain. I have been looking into a sit/stand workstation. Anyone use one and is it helpful?
i have one - OHMT

I just got tired of sitting all day so I bought an electric work station (has a button so you can move the desk up and down). I tried it for a few days but the problem for me was since I have to have one foot on the foot pedal all the time, the other foot was doing all the standing. Might have worked better with a really nice cushion under my feet, like cashiers & hairdressers use, but after a few days I just went back to sitting full time. Now it's just sitting in my basement collecting dust. Send me an email if you're interested in it; we'll work something out.
I am interested in your set up. - sm

If the other poster has emailed you with interest, could you at least let me know where you bought it and how easy it was to change positions?
I really need an adjustable station, but one that is easy to adjust.

Often thought, how cool if I could get a chair like the massage chairs with the face cutout, so you could rest your head in it and work at the same time from a different angle..never thought of a stand up situation...Interesting....I have a problem with my arms going numb, its really getting very difficult to work
Chin tucked - TerriA

What I've learned in physical therapy is to keep you chin tucked. I don't think that would be possible with head in that angle. Might create more problems.
My right arm goes number. It's from the nerves being compressed. Make sure your workstation and posture are correct. I think mine is from years of having a crappy workstation, keyboard, chair, and posture.
I wear my collar when I work - sm

My neck gets tired and then causes more then the usual pain..Definitely not the job to be in, but it is what it is..I know the position of the monitor makes a big difference also..
I can relate! - TerriA

I've often thought about leaving this field because of all the sitting and keyboarding. Not good for my body, but I've been doing it for close to 20 years, and it's all I know. I can't even begin to stomach the thought of making less money.
I put my keyboard in my lap - sm

It seems like the most natural position. I've been MTing for over 30 years and have no pain or discomfort as a result of working. I also use the ergo keyboard where my hands rest on the hand rest. My shoulders are relaxed.
I elevate my foot pedal about 6 inches off the ground.
I also have foot prop for the other leg just to change positions every so often.
Monitor level is also very important ergonomically.
My chair seat is kind of short so it doesn't hit me at the back of my knees. Seems better for the circulation.
Comfort is such a big part of this job. Of course, I'm lucky that I don't have any chronic pain or injuries, disc problems, surgery, etc., so I'm definitely not in the same boat as you, but I hope you can find something that helps :-)
Standing and foot pedal - TerriA

That's exactly what I was worried about with standing, was working the footpedal and not being balanced, with both feet firmly on the ground. I only use my forefoot, keeping my heel on the ground. I don't plan on standing all day, just giving myself 30 minutes here and there throughout the day.
I am interested in at least knowing more about your workstation and will email you for more details.
I found it too difficult and - finally gave up, but

if you were extremely motivated and didn't have dictators who went a mile a minute, you might be able to learn keyboard commands for playback. I was doing this for a while with an Editscript account I worked on, but like I said, gave up because too many dictators were going way too fast.

I want one but can't afford it right now. Also yoga stretches everyday helps.

I've been on that website a lot! Had my eye on the Workfit-S, but it doesn't come down low enough, only parallel to your desk. Yes, lots of pricey choices there, but you really can't put a price on chronic pain. Right now I am doing stretches every 2 hours as per PT.

I know supervisors are overworked also in this field, but I wish supervisors would stand up for their workers. Start communicating w/your MTs/Editors and Go to your higher ups and enlighten them on a few things - simply relay information to them but first you have to get it. It would benefit us both greatly.
Everywhere I have worked, supervisors only communicate 1-way. They don't seek input, return e-mails, etc. I guess if your at home your out-of-site and ...
look it up again. Seems it has disappeared from the top of the MQ thread? Maybe the program ended?
I'm wondering what the requirements are? I'm sure you can't quit and receive benefits. But what about being fired?

I know the job market for MTs is not like it used to be, but I am an ex hospital employee who lost her job to the big NuISance, too. If they continue to get good MTs for a pittance, they'll keep up their monopolystic tactics. In the time I worked for them, they ate up Transcend, WebMedEx, and Accentus (which was about the last company offering decent benefits, based in Canada). If they can't get good MTs, they'll have to mend their ways, but as long as their door keeps revolving, ...
I think every MT who is subjected to sitting and waiting for work that is not there should be paid for stand-by time. Who do these criminals think they are that they can continue to use people like pawns. If absolutely everybody would submit an invoice for all the idle hours spent waiting for work, it would bankrupt them. ...
Without us VR is worthless. We are valuable and deserve to be respected for our knowledge, talent, and experience and compensated fairly for this. The powers that be will succeed in cheating us of our ability to provide for families and our dignity, if we allow it. I am going back to school and getting out of it altogether after 23 years. I see no other way. Any suggestions?

What has happened to us as an MT community. Whenever someone speaks up with anything negative (but factual) about this so-called profession, there is always someone there to belittle the person, or give the old (my personal favorite) just shut up, take it, and LOVE it attitude.
We have absolutely NO POWER left whatsoever? Is this true? Can this be - in our great country - are we just lying down and accepting all that is happening. We are allowing ourselves to go ba ...

I'm getting confused. I read a post by "sm," and she (?) comes across as even-tempered in style and conservative in viewpoint.

Here's the bottom line, colleagues. We're getting paid exactly what we deserve because we don't have the basic fortitude to stop it.
I think, in particular, that women are abused with respect to pay and benefits in the workplace because we are NOTORIOUSLY GUTLESS when it comes to sticking up for ourselves.
I had to think about this three times before the irony really struck me: They pay us half rates for work that can be as difficult and time consuming as straight tr ...
Just had an audit - first one in months. Got a 99%+ but apparently I am sending too much work through to the hospital with blanks and I need to send more reports to QA. Told them I would send more if they did not penalize me financially for doing so. These accounts are the worst by far that I have ever done in over 40 years and I am not prone to hyperbole. If they did not penalize me I would probably send 75% to QA. They can accept my work the way it is, increase th ...
