MModal contracts - Cheela

Posted: Aug 02, 2013

We've been given a cutoff date unofficially.  MModal will be snail-mailing contracts to us, with 2 weeks to decide whether to join MModal or not.  If we choose not to work for MModal, can that be used against us when we file for unemployment?  Does unemployment know MModal's reputation for underpaying and overworking its transcriptionists?  Any advice greatly appreciated.  Should get contract in mail in about a week or so.  THANKS!

If you are going from a hospital to MModal or such, it is up to the facility to decide if they will fight you on UE. My hospital said they would not fight us on UE and had I known how much MModal sucked I would have taken it!

MModal contracts and UE - Cheela

Yes, from acute care hospital. They told us on Good Friday that they are laying us off (THEM, not MModal, who we are not working for and never have.) We've been working with a swinging axe over our heads waiting for a cut-off date, which is unofficial, so we still can't go to UE and get moving on that. Very hard-hearted how they're doing this to long-time loyal employees. They have made it clear that they will do anything to keep from paying UE benefits. Thanks to all your posts about MModal and our own investigations on the company, we KNOW we will go into dire poverty if we sign a contract with them. If I can't get unemployment (I think I can though because about 40 MT's went thru exactly the same scenario 6 months ago, ALL chose against MModal and ALL got UE), I'll see if I can't get financial aid to learn Spanish and become bilingual so I can work in any office, plus Excel and other programs. Offshoring USA MT's should be considered a corporate crime, and it's not just me having sour grapes. MModal is MMORAL.

are they keeping your current platform? - if so i would stay

if not then take the UE. I was with JLG and we are just now going to Fluency in a couple of months. We were bought out last year. it takes a while for them to switch everything over so you may even have another year or so before things get bad. They told us earlier this week we were switching over to Fluency and I went today and preregistered for college and am going back to school to prepare for when the ball drops.
current platform? - Cheela

We haven't seen the contract yet. What MModal originally offered was that we could keep 80 percent of the account we have now (which we know isn't true from other MT's experience) and a MUCH higher medical ins. cost. We're paid by the hour and have figured out that the rates they offer would cut our pay at least in half, probably more with the much higher medical benefits.

I could not agree with what you said any more! Mine was same scenario, but my hospital encouraged us to go to work for MModal and it was nothing but lies from day 1. There is no reason why you should not collect UE and I am glad you made the decision not to go with MModal! I had to try it for myself to find out how awful they really are. I wish you the very best!

Not taking MModal - Cheela

Thanks for the input. I've only heard horror stories about working for MModal so far. Hardly one positive word from those in the MMOdal trenches! Plus, I looked at their own website and discovered what kind of wages I could possibly earn, and even though I'm very fast and accurate (been transcribing over 20 years), I am sure I'd have to work 12 hour days with all the NJA, unfamiliarity with the doctors they'll have out there, getting no "flow" going, no momentum, etc. Indeed.Jobs and Glassdoor (and other sources) made it fairly clear that I'd be lucky as a F/T MT to bring in $1100 a month, not every two weeks! I've really suffered on my on-site job for 13 years at the hands of management (trying to get me to quit so they wouldn't have to pay UE, unbeknownst to me at the time), and I deserve time off to RECOVER from the ABUSE. Don't need MModal's brand of abuse. Yes, you most likely would have been better off getting UE. Thanks for sharing.

Totally depends on what rate they start you at - Doing okay

[ In Reply To ..]
You need to see what rate they are bringing you on at. If you can at all negotiate for a higher rate because raises are few and far between in this company. The top tier pays 10 for typing and 6 for editing while the lowest tier pays 8 and 4.

Figure all your lines at speech rec pay that way if you get typing lines it is a bonus. Know that the average Mmodal MT does 180 lines, but there are many who do between 250-300 or more. There is a huge difference between being paid 4 cpl and 6 cpl and it is definitely worth your while to try to negotiate into a higher rate. I take home almost 1000 a check with paying for insurance for my family but I also have been on my accounts a long time and have a good manager. Not everyone has it horrible here. Not as good as it used to be but I am definitely not looking to flip burgers any time soon.

Thanks, will definitely try to negotiate a higher rate. Give me $1.50 a report and I will stay. I'm very experienced and being screwed over by this company. See my post from this morning. I'm in contact with Kevin Dolley Law services. Need more people to hop on board! Transcend went down, so will M-IMoral.

I would like to know how you clear 1000 every 2 weeks? You must have some excellent dictators because I have over 24 years experience and never made near that and yes I am fast also! Of course, I was not given my own doctors to transcribe as promised and got transcription types I was not at all familiar with and doctors who dictated as fast as they could and mumbled and got reprimanded for leaving too many blanks! Well sorry they didn't do neurosurgery where I came from in either hospital! I would have to see your 1000 every 2 weeks after insurance! Sorry, don't believe that!
After there are plenty of merges and buyouts, - you will be grandfathered in.
[ In Reply To ..]
Soon a letter will come to you and it will state how you will be grandfathered in and at the same base pay as EVERYONE else in the company. You will lose all raises, etc. It sucks!!!

I have been thinking about getting my own contracts instead of working for a big company.  Can anyone please advise me on how to go about this?  I have been working for five years as an MT and I was just content with what I had but I won't be getting a raise anytime soon (haven't for the past 5 years) and I know that I would be making more independently. There are numerous AMERICAN transcription companies that could not only handle this work, but provide more accurate transcription services ...

I Have A Question About ICs With Contracts/new Jobs
Aug 11, 2010

Do most ICs who sign contracts requiring 30-day notice adhere to that?  I cannot see myself working two full-time jobs, as I oftentimes have trouble meeting minimum line count requirements at the current job because changes seem to come along about every 90 days or so, just when I am getting used to things and am finally able to consistently make the line count.  I guess I fear that if I tell the new job I cannot start for 30 days (or even two weeks for that matter) they will not hold ...

VA Contracts - How The Hourly Is Determined

MModal, WHY????
May 24, 2012

Why is MModal posting job openings, when so many of use are running out of work or worse falling into the pool--what with the pay cuts, VR being paid half even though it takes nearly as long to edit most reports, and the fact that I only get my "primary" accounts about 30% of the time and the rest of the time I am typing from the pool so that nearly every report that comes up is a new facility or dictator, I have gone from making $16 an hour to minimum wage. I cannot afford this. Why can' ...
