WOW MModal is the new UPS - nice slap in the face

Posted: Oct 16, 2013

There is one area we do plan to adjust for 2014 which we expect will impact a very small percentage of our employees. If your spouse or domestic partner works and is eligible to receive health benefits in another qualified plan in 2014, you will be subject to a $100 per month surcharge if you elect to include them in the M*Modal healthcare plan.  Keep in mind that this cost applies only to working spouses and domestic partners, not to children or other dependents

Apparently we are part of the "very small percentage of employees affected." Right. Meanwhile, my "very small" check keeps getting smaller. Time to get serious about an exit strategy.

Why do you fault the company - its obamacare

[ In Reply To ..]
you should be happy they didnt follow the trend and switch us all to part time like a lot of companies did so they dont have to provide any insurance at all.

Obamacare doesn't set the rates. Insurance companies - and companies DO

stop blaming obama for price gouging.
Really? Have you seen the rates at the - exchanges.

North Carolina's cost of opposition on Obamacare

It's up to the Republicans in power. They can get with the program or they can stay on the barricades long after Obamacare has come through and let North Carolinians keep paying the price of their protest.

It's because of Obamacare - hard-working American
[ In Reply To ..]
It's so convenient to blame Obamacare for everything. There are some companies/employers (those that believe their employees are a financial burden because they offer them benefits) that are choosing to drop medical insurance for their employees because it would be more cost effective for them not to offer their employees any benefits. It all comes down to corporate greed. It's just convenient for them at this time to blame Obamacare for it.
It's because of the anticipated costs of ACA. One of my SM - MT2

[ In Reply To ..]
Gee, thanks for your support. Guess I should be happy that in the last year since being "acquired" by MM my wages have dropped $11 per hour ($25 to $14) and my insurance is now going up $100 per month. I'd be better off dropped to part time, because then I could qualify for a policy on the exchange. But again, thanks for your 2 cents.

I don't support government takeover of anything..Its worked so well in the past, like SS, the post office, etc. Not to mention the gvt debt. Funny its not the gvts fault,,BUT the rates just happened to skyrocket with ocare roll out. Coincidence, don't think so..

Medical insurance companies are taking advantage of the fact that everyone now has to have medical insurance (new health care law), and due to corporate greed, they are doubling their insurance rates.

Also, if your state does not participate in the exchanges this happens:

NC's cost of abstinance on Obamacare

Many North Carolinians were frustrated by glitches at healthcare.gov last week as they tried to shop online for health insurance, but none was more miffed than North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin.

The mission of Goodwins department is to help people with insurance, but in this case it could do almost nothing. The General Assembly, in a fit of pique against the Affordable Care Act lawmakers deride as Obamacare, barred the state from any participation in the rollout of the historic effort to insure the nations 48 million uninsured. The Republican-led legislature and Republican Gov. Pat McCrory rejected billions of dollars in federal aid to expand Medicaid to about 500,000 low-income state residents. They also refused to set up a state-run marketplace to sell insurance to individuals. North Carolina left that job to the federal government.

The states decision not to participate in Obamacare means Goodwins department was barred from setting up a more nimble exchange focused on North Carolinas needs. It also meant forgoing $27 million in federal money that would have supported efforts by the Department of Insurance to educate and assist more than a million North Carolinians who are expected to shop for insurance on the exchanges.

Its extremely frustrating that we cant help, Goodwin said.

Goodwin, a Democrat and a former state legislator, was eager to set up an exchange that could attract more insurance companies and offer advice on the new health care law. Involvement by the state likely would have produced plans better tailored to the states needs and with more coverage per premium dollar. As it was, a basic compliance review of plans being offered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield found an error in the numbers, faulty assumptions and a benefit not required under the new law. As a result, Blue Cross policies went onto the exchange at rates 10 percent lower than originally proposed.

Imagine what might have been if the Department of Insurance were fully involved. Goodwin has.

I firmly believe that if it had been a North Carolina exchange, most of the components would have functioned much more efficiently and at a better cost, he said.

The folly and cruelty of refusing the Medicaid expansion have been much discussed. But the cost of also saying no to a state-run exchange has not been so apparent or much debated. Its effects didnt begin to materialize until last week, when Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Coventry Health Care posted their plans and premium prices on the North Carolina exchange being run by the federal government.

Considering the meager competition Blue Cross is the only statewide provider, and Coventry is offering plans in only 39 of the states 100 counties the premium prices are surprisingly reasonable after federal subsidies are included. But while rates may be affordable, its harder to calculate how much may be missing from North Carolina plans compared with those at the same price in states that fully cooperated with the new law.

North Carolinians who buy insurance through the exchange will pay more because of the Republicans temper tantrum. The extra cost is a mix of hard and soft numbers. One hard number is 3.5 percent. Thats the percentage the federal government adds to premiums to cover its cost for running an exchange. If North Carolina had run its own, the cost could have been lower and broadly dispersed across the states tax base an allocation from the general fund, for instance with little or no effect on premiums.

On top of the 3.5 percent are higher premium rates attributable to diminished competition. The idea behind the health care law is that putting more younger and healthier people into the risk pool will attract more insurance companies, and their competition will keep rates as low as possible. But in North Carolina, that competition was discouraged by the states lack of involvement. Companies prefer doing business with a state-run exchange in which state officials know the market and can help companies fashion policies that fit it.

We really believe that health care is local, said Susan Millerick, a spokeswoman for Aetna, which recently acquired Coventry. There is definitely value in having a state-run exchange because the state knows the states needs.

Insurance companies were also wary of North Carolina because it refused to expand Medicaid, meaning thousands of people whose incomes are between 100 and 138 percent of the federal poverty level were not picked up as planned. Instead, they will go to the exchange. Because lower income people tend to have less preventative care and more chronic illness, the redirecting of those near the poverty level made the states risk pool riskier and less attractive to insurance companies. A Rand Corp. report estimated that failure to expand Medicaid in three states Texas, Louisiana and Florida would increase premium rates on their exchanges by 8 percent to 10 percent.

Its not too late to fix the problem. The legislature can still accept the Medicaid expansion, and it can set up a state exchange and let North Carolinas state insurance experts help North Carolinians. But federal funds that support those moves will dry up before long.

Its up to the Republicans in power. They can get with the program or they can stay on the barricades long after Obamacare has come through and let North Carolinians keep paying the price of their protest.

That small percentage might get smaller - just saying

[ In Reply To ..]
This surcharge actually makes sense. Why would M-Modal (or any other company) want to carry spouses/partners/non-employees if they can obtain their own insurance through their employers or through the exchanges? I would think that you would be grateful to have them off your insurance as it will save you money not to have to pay their premium. They are putting the surcharge out there, it is your choice to take it or leave it. Everything here always seems to be presented in black and white. They are not making you do anything, it is your choice.

This wasnt supposed to be shared outside - the company

[ In Reply To ..]
you might want to delete your copy & paste and make just a general statement. Just sayin...

It really is not a slap in the face as insurance through - Mmodal is still cheapest out there

[ In Reply To ..]
of any of the companies. You might want to take a look around and reevaluate your thought progress. Even adding the $100 surchage, you're not going to find anything cheaper with the same coverage at any of these MT companies. If anything, it is one incentive to stay and outweighs the pay issues.

You mention qualifying for a plan on the exchange. You still have that option, but you're most likely going to pay more through there. If your current Mmodal rate is over a certain percentage of your salary, you can qualify for exchange rates. Do the research to find the best option for yourself. It's more productive than blaming.

You can thank Obama Care for that, not MModal. Every company out there is hit with fines if they do not follow those unfair Obama Care rules, it is going to be a nightmare for all companies and heartache as well. I know a family member of mine heads up a huge HR division of her company, many upset employees, many need 2 insurances as we age. Government sticking it to us, not MModal.

My husband's company - health insurance

[ In Reply To ..]
*Note, this is not for MM.

We're getting an additional $63/year tax taken out for the Transitional Reinsurance Tax, plus the premiums will increase between 300 and 600 (don't know if that's per year or month yet--that wasn't in the notice) depending on the plan you pick and dependents you cover. Word on the street is they won't be offering any health benefits come 2015.

Thank you Obamacare.

Also, my sister's private plan, which she's had for over 15 years with Blue Cross Blue Shield, will be canceled effective Jan 1. That is also due to Obamacare.

Health Benefits - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
If they employ more than 50 people, they are required to offer health benefits to anyone working more than 20 hours a week and their dependents. Blue Cross/Blue Shield are getting out of the state exchanges because they are going to be losing money under "Obamacare" (Affordable Care Act). $63 a year is only $5 a month. If your premiums are going up that much, you are now free to choose your own insurance as we are going to have an open marketplace. You can't always believe everything you hear on the street.
