LOVE starting the week with NJA! - not going to cry, not going to cry, not going to c

Posted: Oct 25, 2010

Instead of sitting here crying, I'm smiling a little because I am putting my plan B into action starting in January. Going to school for my RN degree.  Just hope I can keep in enough work to get me through 4 semesters of it, then they can have it!

good for you! - sm

Going back to school has been a great and challenging experience for me. I feel alive again after being deadened by MT work for 16 years with my self esteem in the dirt. There are now grants out there if you make under a certain amount of money to help you survive. Also loans to supplement, which are paying my bills. Good luck!

Thanks! - nn

What are you going to school for?

I'm full time getting an associates with a transfer to a University for a BSW and then an MSW (masters in social work).

Yes, salary has taken such a deep dive that all - my community college

tuition was paid for by state grants. My only regret about leaving MT'ing is that I am going to have to go out and join the regular world. I went into MT'ing to get the freedom I have had, and now I am reluctant to lose that. I definitely wouldn't be working the late shift if I wasn't working at home. No sleepy driving home, just go to bed.

Do the grants only pay for tuition, or do they help - with living expenses while in school?

[ In Reply To ..]
If not, how do you do it? (Go to school, study, do homework and/or labs), AND still work enough hours to pay for food and housing?

I receive 700 in grants per semester and 4000 in loans. My husband makes 12 dollars an hour so it is supplementing quite nicely until he finds a higher paying job.
Hmm. I guess I'm outta luck. Thanks for answering - my question, though! ;) nm

Just curious, how old are you? - Almostseniorcitizen

I'm just curious as to how old you are. You are definitely doing the right thing -- RN will have you set for the rest of your life money-wise. I just don't have the drive to go back to school after almost 40 years have passed. Congratulations and much luck to you in your new career!

Thank you! - Just turned 40

Day after day of no jobs, no jobs, no jobs just finally spurred me to do it once and for all! It will be very hard but I am READY!!!

Got my BS in nursing in 1980, worked as a hospital and clinic nurse for 10 years (7 different fields) and HATED it. I remember the toll it took on my body in my 20s (caught scabies from a bagman and hepatitis from a needle stick). I just couldn't do that again, especially 30 years later. Plus I'd have to go back to school to renew my license. Just not worth it for me. I also have a second at-home job that I adore which I would have to give up if I worked days/evenings/nights in a single week, which is inevitable as a nurse just starting at a hospital. I'd love to leave medicine altogether despite being so good at it by now. I'm also afraid of what might happen should the government try to control our wages in response to some new healthcare "reforms." What else could I do at home?

I'm right with you, sister - Only 52

I feel frozen in place. I can't think of anything I want to do, besides retire (LOL) and I can't afford that! I think there are a lot of us in this position. I personally feel the profession I've put my lifesblood into for the past 20 years has betrayed me.

I feel exactly as you do frozen in place. But I don't think it is our profession that betrayed, but MQ who continues to betray us by not treating us like human beings, not speaking to us, not including us. I'd like to wake up one morning and know what I want to do "now" as MT-ing is a job I love and one that is perfect for me -- whether it is editing or typing -- I just wish there was the same amount of work that we used to have.

Finished My First Week At My New Job And I Love It!
Nov 08, 2009

Well, I started my new job as an office assistant and I love it.  It was nice to know that when I got home, I was done for the day.  I did not have to work into the night and worry about making my lines.  On Friday, we had absolutely no patients scheduled and no doctors were in the clinic and I still got paid.  If I had been doing transcription, I would have been without pay for the entire weekend and would have had to compete with everyone else on my account on Monday to try ...

HAPPY MT WEEK - Have A Great Week
May 17, 2010

To all you wonderful MTs working and slaving your lives away, Happy MT Week.  I appreciate you.  I appreciate your kindness when I have a rant or a rave, when I'm at my wits end with the constant changing around of clients, client profiles and the never ending dings being thrown at me. I appreciate knowing that I am not alone in this struggle. It is because of all of you, and only you MTs on this board that I manage to stay in this game.  We are treated as less than second class citiz ...

At 99.4% This Week, Congratulated That I Improved Over Last Week.
Feb 13, 2015

Good grief. I did not change the way I edit. It so depends on how many commas they think you should have. Yes, I made an unusual (for me) mistake last week, but the rest of passing an audit is dumb luck of whether you get a realistic auditor or Ms English wannabe. Everybody must be under pressure because of the cesspool as I see a lot of mistakes when I look up past reports to help with these mush mouths and accents. The time czar wants schedule changes, but I see no problems with turna ...

Help Starting
Mar 05, 2010

Hello, I was interested in becoming a MT because I recently became a mom and would like to work from home. Can anyone tell me the best way to get started? Is there a class/ school you recommend? Or is there a book I can study and take a test to get certified? I am financially strapped so which would be the best for me? I currently work in the medical field in the ER as a Doctors Scribe so I have quite a bit of medical terminology. Thanks for your input!  ...

I'm Really Starting To Wonder If
May 05, 2015

Nuance is any better than it's getting around here at MM?  I see they want experienced MTs rather than newbies in one of the ads, so that would sound like they'd expect to have to pay better at least.  I used to think this place was better, but not lately.  Does anyone here work for both currently, or even recently? ...

Starting At Medquist
Sep 07, 2010

I have a question.  I was hired on at Medquist and was scheduled to start back on August 23.  The radiology account I had been assigned to hadn't gone live yet.  I was then told it would be approximately the second week in September.  Still no word from my supervisor as to a start date for training.  Anyone know of another person on the radiology team I can contact about this.  I have no other names except for my supervisor's name and the name of my recrui ...

Starting Pay At Medquist

I tested w them prev. but no luck.  Now, I have recd. three voice mails and two emails to get me to retest.  I have a job already for $9.30/hr that I like.  I have read horror stories about Medquist and seasoned employees there having their pay reduced to basically minimal wage. Starting A Business
Jan 29, 2011

Hi. I am new to MT boards here but wondering about how one would start a home business. I have worked for companies as a subcontractor but wish to advertise for myself and get some work from local doctors on my own. I would likely need a mini transcriber if I have to pick up and drop off tapes, but how does one do it over the internet? Would there be a way to get it through email set up of some kind with audio wav files that they could dictate to and I access it from there and just type and emai ...
