FT to PT - I did it

I went from full time to part time in January to go back to school. There is no certain time to change your status from FT to PT, but you can't go back to FT from PT for 1 year. This is what my CCM told me.
High five to someone else going back to school. I did, too. Hopefully that is the wave of the future - for MQ MTs. nm

I'm trying to find a career in which I could utilize all of my medical knowledge, but still work at home. Does that exist? What have you found?
PT to FT - for school

I have been an MT since 1984, and I never thought I would be looking for a new career all these years later. My pay decreased $20,000 in the last 4 years, and I was forced to work 1 weekend midnight shift. I know it could be worse, but when you've done this job for so long and already paid your dues with the crappy hours, it just stinks! I just can't stay until I'm working all midnight shifts and making even less money.
I am in school for "Information Reporting Technology" which is a fancy name for a court reporter. I like the similarity between that and being an MT, just using a different type of machine to transcribe the spoken word.
Also, there are other career options in the field such as a CART reporter which is someone who accompanies a hearing impaired person to things like school, meetings, etc. and transcribes the professor/speaker realtime for the hearing impaired person to follow along and be less conspicuous I guess than having a sign language interpretor. They also have the benefit of having a printed transcript if they so choose.
Another option is a closed captioner, which is what I am interested in. Apparently the captioners are the "elite" group of reporters, so I have my work cut out for me. I just finished my first semester and have 3 more to go to earn an associates degree.
CART/Interpreter - Flying Fingers

Just to clarify the statement on CART for hearing impaired clients (because I think this is a great field for MT's to transition into and just want to see accurate information out there), it isn't so they can be less conspicuous. They're used to that, and frankly they often have both a CARTer and an interpreter. Reason? Think about the problem of using your eyes as your primary source of information intake. What happens when you're watching an interpreter but feel the need to take notes? You miss the next chunk of information.
Many deaf students (at all levels) have it written in their IEPs that they have a right to an interpreter (so that they can get the message interpreted into their own language, because contrary to popular belief, ASL is not just English on the hands) but also so they have the English transcript the above poster mentioned for use as their "class notes."
It's a profession lots of MTs who really enjoy the transcription aspect of our profession would very much enjoy. I'm seriously thinking about going there myself someday, so I can play both sides of the street, but first I need to finish my interpreting credentials.

CART - reporter

I didn't mean for the hearing impaired person to be less conspicuous. I meant the reporter/interpreter to be less conspicuous to the others in the room. We have a sign language interpreter in our church, and I find myself focusing more on her than the service itself. I'm probably not explaining myself very well but in no way intended to disrespect the hearing impaired.
I agree that this is a great field, and may shift my career focus in that direction. Who knows? Only time will tell.
Thanks for replying.....Can you tell me if PT'ers - Kiki1

can participate in 401k or the health plan? I'm thinking not but as we all know, that isn't a big loss. But just wondering....

My 401k has continued, but I am without medical, dental, optical insurance. A huge at least 2-year risk, but I am healthy and rarely used the insurance. Still scares the crap out of me though!
With regards to the right hip, it is also evaluated showing no swelling or deformity. There is significant tenderness to s/l drop palpation over the greater trochanter.

decrease the weight of a line when paying VR. For example, if you edit 2000 lines in a day, is it customary for the company to ask you to multiply that by 0.70 for a total of 1400 lines because they are VR and not straight transcription as well as pay you half your transcription line rate? Does everyone do this? I am finding VR to be much more intense and demanding than straight transcription and this seems like a double whammy to me! ...
Doctor is giving medication list and says: "Erythomycin 0.5 s/l in-shrib-in to right eye." I'm assuming it is drops or ointment but don't know what in-shrib-in might mean and it's said very clearly. Any help would be appreciated. ...
Or only certain time of the year? With all the NJA the stress of trying to stay FT and get my 40 hours in killing me. It's getting next to impossible to get 40 hours anyway, so I figure I'd go to PT of 30 hours and stop stressing. My CCM says I'll most likely lose my health benefits anyway if I continue not getting my 40 hours in.

I wondered if anyone has noticed a drop in their pay since being moved to this platform? I am being paid an hourly wage in order for the system to learn my accounts and also until it starts coming in as text and we get our speed up, but I have noticed about a 200 to 300 dollar drop in my pay. Anyone else experience this with this crappy platform? ...
I'm guessing either the huge group of hospitals (I think they're like the walmart of hospitals) dropped them because they were awful, or they're trying to keep costs low and are having ILPs do their own QA, which will be a disaster. Since I see the USA side of that hospital group still pop up once in awhile, I'm guessing its the latter.
Pretty much the ILP QA department may as well be nonexistent. I see just as many errors on work that goes through th ...
This week has been the turning point for me. As I was thinking about all of the presenters and debaters at ACE this year, they had one thing in common. They were all selling or promoting something. Then there were the MTSOs, who are the problem rather than the solution, but put in the position of lecturing to us.
I can delete the e-mail promotions, but when you pay to go to a conference, you don't expect it to be full of sales promotions.
Each presenter had an agenda, but it wasn ...
I've had a huge drop in work at Landmark for the past 3 months. I've been there for 3 years working on the same account the entire time. I've looked at my paychecks during these same exact months for the past years and I had much bigger paychecks, meaning much more work. Here it is a weekend and I had hardly any work yesterday and so far no work today and this account always had work. It's been this way for almost 4 months. Anyone work on the big account that starts ...

an email, a letter, anything, let them know what MQ is doing with THEIR patient's reports. I guarantee you, they will be furious that they are now basically forcing you to guess what you don't know...I think they'll take it up with their administration and MQ will lose a lot of customers. But if you don't do it, they'll never know. Do you really think MQ would tell them that's what they're doing? ...
I have not seen how long our pay would be dropped the 3 cents. Am I missing something? Is it just that pay period or the next week or what? I just don't see that. I spoke up and am having a conference call with the "team" tomorrow and I really would like to know how long our pay would be deducted. Peronally I can't afford to have my pay deducted and if you can (mq mts), then you are lucky. I have not had a pay raise in 9 years and all of this is goin ...
