Setting aside for the moment whether leaving without notice is ethical or the right/wrong thing to do:
If I leave without notice, can they withhold my next check?

Leaving without notice is usually not proper, but I did it. I owed them nothing, they took away my money and my spirit. Besides, they could just tell you to pack it up and not let you stay the 2 weeks. Worst that happened to me was I wasn't eligible for re-hire, which I clearly told them was just fine and dandy by me.
If you choose to give notice, assume the risk that they might not let you stay the 2 weeks. If you choose to not give notice, be very clear in your mind that you never wish to work for them again in case they enforce the "not eligible for rehire" thing.

P.S. Meant to mention that I don't believe they would withhold any money due you from transcription. I would make sure, though, that you use up all your PTO and sick days before giving notice/or not giving notice. Those you probably wouldn't collect.

...my only real concern is that check; I don't want to do it if there is any chance at all that they could withhold it. The way I see it, "employee at will" status works both ways, since that's probably how they feel about it at their end.

No matter how bad it is, usually it is best not to "burn bridges." We never know what lies in the future.

It's illegal to withhold any pay or PTO owed you - notice or not. I'd never give 2 weeks notice.
Before you quit, print out your last few pay stubs, your list of reports from DQM from the pay period, and your Schedule Source summary for the last couple pay periods. You will not have access to these when you quit, and you might need them for proof.

Been watching the MQ board closely as I was looking for another job. I think it is totally disgusting what is happening with your company. They obviously don't think it is WRONG to do what they are doing.

A lot of companies don't allow you to continue working the 2 weeks after you give your notice for fear of "what you would do to them, their clients, and/or their computer systems." My son tried to give notice in another field and was asked to return his keys and was escorted from their property (nicely), passwords to everything changed, and he was given the 2-week salary (which I know Q wouldn't do). It is kind of a safety concern now with all the business virtual and computerized.

They would have to fear you sabotaging the medical record as you continue to transcribe. Quitting a company because you're unhappy is considered a hostile move, so they may very well tell you to just pack up.
I was very clear on why I was quitting, and if anyone asks you, I would not be shy in telling them. I was very professional, of course, but very clear.

You are not required to give 2-weeks notice and companies are not required to give you 2-weeks notice. But if you are quitting because of pay cuts & threats of termination, you could be eligible for unemployment - find out and collect. Giving 2-weeks notice won't make a difference.
I made the mistake once of giving 2-weeks notice. I was even given a going away party. When I tried to collect unemployment, Tulane Medical Center Department of Medicine, Immunology Allergy Department, Dr. Piled Higher & Deeper Sam Lehrer blocked me from collecting. But I did get my paycheck because that's the law.

my passwords were shut down and I was unable to work. I was very unhappy there for about a year before I quit and they knew it. I got an email telling me to return my equipment and then I would get my check. I would just give 2 weeks notice and print out copies as posted above and see what happens. That way, you have your copies and your not burning any bridges as another poster suggested. You are taking the high road that way because you are better than them.

was resigning effective immediately, signed off on my timecard, and that was that. Paycheck came on time including paying me for the PTO Hours I had accrued. No problem whatsoever.
Does anyone know if MQ can take some of your check that is due to arrive, already approved, if we suddenly just quit and leave? What can they do if we don't give a 15-30 day notice????? How soon do they want their old computer back? Any information about leaving without notice is really appreciated!!!! ...
Well, I am officially hired for a great new position - elsewhere of course - a partly in-house/and partly work from home place that seems to actually still be paying a decent wage to their transcriptionists. Anyway, it all came about kind of suddenly and they need someone immediately, but not sure about how much notice to give to the service. Any thoughts? ...
Sorry QC was put on the grid and suffering losses (like we have), but from my point of view the more of them leave, the more work left for us. Isn't that horrible we are reduced to feeling that way about our co-workers???
Some QC say they are not allowed to do MT unless the account is behind, some say they are allowed when they run out of work. From the length of time we have been suffering from OOW I have to believe they can and do jump in on our work when out of QC ...

Just wanted to add my voice to the growing chorus of long-timers leaving the Q finally. The account I worked on for 15 years just up and vanished Monday - without a word to any of us. I like TT for the most part but I am not making enough money to pay my bills. Their VR pay is so low so I am thinking of going somewhere else. But isn't VR pay low everywhere? I know some peoplea are going to slam me but so be it. I just ask those talking about leaving to consider the following while making your decision:
1. Will the next employer guarantee you won't run out of work or pay you for downtime if you do?
2. Do they give you 401(k) matching at the same level Nuance does or better?
3. Do they pay you the average hourly wage you make for vacation/sick days or do they limiit your dollar amount, even if you normally earn ...
