I work in an extremely busy ortho office. i had major problems for about 3 weeks with a new computer. So, we're trying to get some help for about 2 weeks to get me caught up We found one girl who charges 15cents a line plus 8 cents for PRN - bringing it to 23 cents a line. Is this the norm???? thanks!

I don't think 23 cents a line is the norm anywhere. I would offer her the same amount as you are making (per line or per hour). I know she is helping your office out, but that rate seems like a rip off although I am sure others will disagree with me.

Thanks for the input. i get paid by the hour and we were really wanting to pay by the line. (I don't know much about that) but I thought that was a little excessive@

I think that is a little much. I charge my clients 0.10 to 0.12 a line and that's it. No charges for stats or PRN work. I'm not sure where you are located, but I would think that anywhere that is too much! Just my opinion. I have about 30 doctors myself and know that 0.10 to 0.14 is the going rate around here. A. How bad do you need her service?

B. Is she giving you a chart-ready product?

C. Do you have other offers.

Cheapest is not always best. If you need the work done fast and accurately, you won't get it cheaply.

There are a lot of factors you are leaving out. Does she pick up tapes? How does she return the work? Does she print/deliver or send by email?

If you were to use a temporary agency, the 15/23 cpl is about right. You always pay extra for short-term bailout help. If the work is accessed via the 'net and turned in the same way, I would offer 15 cpl. I wonder about the extra 8 cpl for p.r.n. work. Maybe this means stat work? If yes, that is not an unusual fee.

I would NOT pay her by the hour based on a comparison to your own hourly pay. She is not familiar with the account and would most likely take longer than you to complete. Conversely, you don't want to crimp her pay if she is particularly efficient and gets the work done with lightening speed, shortening the number of billable hours.

another p.s. I was recently offered 20 cpl for an account, so this is not necessarily out of the question for a temp bailout position.

If she wants the job, I would tell her the 15 cpl is the limit. - Still seems a bit high at that.

I work directly for an ortho office and only make 13 cents a line. They ask for STAT notes all the time and there is no extra for that. I am sure that you can find someone to do it for even less than 15 cents a line. Anyway, do you even know if the quality of her work is even acceptable?

Why not just pay this person what she is asking? After all it's only two weeks of work. If the office needs the help quickly to catch up, I say beggars can't be choosers. Everybody wants something for nothing these days!

how much does your practice stand to lose when the reports do not get transcribed and your office doesn't get paid by the insurance company? as you are a transcriptionist yourself, you surely must know the value of transcription to the practice, and you certainly know your own value - aren't you worth 23 cents a line??? so is this girl, especially when you are in a pickle - she is a smart cookie!!

Today I get the paperwork from the HSA that we had the option to join for the new insurance. Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession. I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India. Now all that's left are transcription companies here in the U.S. that don't want to pay much more, lie to us and tamper with our line counts. GET OUT, GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION! ...

It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand.
