may I make a suggestion to younger folks - going back to school?

Posted: Nov 12, 2013

Here's one that I wish someone had recommended to me back when I was pursuing my bachelor's degree:  Take ROTC.  Seriously.  When you graduate with that experience on your resume, prepared to be a military officer, you won't regret it.

Here's another one I wish I had considered when I was younger, which may still be available to me even at my age:  Library Science.  sounds boring right? When I was in school I'm sure I thought, "I don't want to be a LIBRARIAN." (visualize that old maid in glasses and old sweater, hair in a bun, you get the picture).  But now I realize if I had that degree, I could be an archivist which I would love.

Good luck everyone!

as usual somebody has to - dislike.

I swear somebody goes through here every day and dislikes every post just to make herself feel better or something.

From the ROTC website - RU kidding me?

What are the chances that I will be deployed to support the Global War on Terrorism?

It depends on the Army branch the Cadet chooses and the unit to which he/she is assigned. However, Army missions and challenges are always changing, so there's no way to know in advance which specialties and units will be needed where. All Soldiers in the Army or Army Reserve face the possibility of deployment at some point during their careers. But all Soldiers are fully trained and proficient in the tasks and drills of their units. And Officers are specifically trained to make the right decisions so that missions can be carried out safely and successfully.

it could happen - but see message

I'm not sure what your complaint is, but yes, all military personnel have the possibility of being called to a combat zone. However, there are many roles performed by military personnel that do not involve actual combat at all (computers, for instance). Also, the role of an officer in such a situation is MUCH different than that of the enlisted man.

My father proudly served as an Air Force officer for 20 years, and I was proud of him. He served on a flight crew in Viet Nam.

When I was preparing for college, I really, really, really wanted to do Navy ROTC. My parents told me they would disown me if I did. I still regret not going ahead and doing it.

Well, a few required tours in Iraq/Middle East would have - been a different life. nm

Yep, sure would - 15 years ago

I would have been willing to take that risk, obviously. I feel I have the right to defend my country as much as any man does.

Btw, thanks for the snippy sarcasm.. reminded me of why posting here is such a waste of my time.

When I was in high school - sm

I don't know how they got my name, but an Army recruiter came to my home on several occasions, and once he even came to my JOB. I worked at a pizza joint then (hey, I was still in school), and he said to me, "do you want to be in this job forever? You need to join."

There is something very off-putting about having the military come harass you at your home and work when you are just a young girl. I would rather have worked at that pizza joint for the rest of my life than enroll in any military program after that.

well that is pretty weird - dont blame you nm

He was correct and you should have. - sm

It is an honorable thing to serve. You'd have healthcare now, at the very least.

On the other hand, if you thought of yourself as a "young girl, " you probably weren't mature enough to do well with it.

No, he was not correct. - And I already have healthcare.

[ In Reply To ..]
Why do you assume I don't have healthcare? I have everything I need.

Of course I was a young girl. I was still in school. What else should I have been at that point?

It's pretty obnoxious to have a stranger on the internet try to tell you what you "should have" done with your life. You don't know anything about me.

Well, it is a bit odd to base a major decision like that - on the dislike of a recruiter

NM
but why did the recruiter keep hounding her? - ?
[ In Reply To ..]
wouldn't that make you kind of wonder too? If she said no once, why did the guy keep coming back? was there no one else in the entire community that he thought worthy of recruiting?
And he bothered her at work. - Khaled

I don't think she deserves any flack for being properly disturbed by the government stalking her before she was even out of high school.

Gonna Make A Suggestion
Apr 10, 2013

I want to extend a great big THANK YOU to everybody who has posted on this board, both good and bad.  I never took the negativity personally or to heart.  In fact, I considered it a lesson that I needed to learn with respect to the way this industry has deteriorated. That coupled with my sciatica (only when sitting) convinced me that it was time to move on once and for all, which I have. I would like to see others in this industry do the same. The biggest problem for me was findin ...

Questions For Current QA Folks.
Nov 02, 2010

Was wondering when the ad reads CPL for QA if that means the lines for the whole report you QA or just what you fill in for blanks.  Also, with your company, do you do feedback to the MTs?  I did QA a few years ago and do realize requirements in this position most likely are different with each company. but in that experience, I was required to give feedback on their form and it was such a cumbersome and time-consuming form, I made more doing VR/text. ...

AHDI Wants To Know Why Folks Are Not Renewing CMT.
Aug 27, 2012

Can't wait to mail my *reason* back to them. I can hardly wait for the mailman to collect my reply, and this is just my opinion. I'm sending the below to all three persons at AHDI named on the inquiry. 1. My company (and others nowadays) do not recognize CMT status any longer. 2. Why should I *recertify* myself to obtain a basically minimum wage-paying career, which is what the MT field has become these days, and the pay is getting lower as time goes by. I do applaud their efforts ...

Just Baked A Cake, Folks...remembering When
Dec 13, 2011

around this time in the afternoon, yesteryear...I would take a look at my line count. It might read 2500 or so...I might decide to take a hiking, biking or swim break and if I chose, come back later at night and add another 1000 into the mix for the day...that would be a $350.00 day. Work flowed 'round the clock, I stayed in hotels for 1 or 2 months out of the year--window by the sea, as I transcribed away in front of a gorgeous view...but today, the only numbers before me are those on the ...

Just A Suggestion
Nov 22, 2010

I want to make a suggestion to the MTs out there who are looking for work.  Rather than possibly posting on the Jobs Wanted board, post your resume on the Resume Bank.  I received a call a week ago Saturday from a company looking for MTs -- they have not posted openings here on MT Stars or on the other board, but they are looking.  I know this because I spoke today with the person that hired me.  He (as the company rep, mentioned that when he goes to the Resume Board), there ...

TransTech Suggestion
Jul 19, 2011

How about this? For holiday coverage, why not schedule 4-hour shifts instead of 8-hour shifts with hardly anything to do? For example, why not have some MTs commit to the following shifts: 7am-11am 11am-3pm 3pm-7pm 7pm-11pm 11pm-3am 3am-4am I think the MTs would like that idea. They could spend time with family/friends on the holidays without being on call and having to check their queue every 15 minutes or so for some work. They commit and work for 4 hours and are done. I've worked ...

Here's A Suggestion For Those Wanting To Know
Jan 08, 2013

Cheap, cheap, cheap. You should pay your peeps. You could tell the clients NTS cannot keep up with work because people are jumping ship like rats from a hot fire. Perhaps management (upper, way upper I mean) could explain instead of the TLs having to do it, that they needed so much money to take to the bank they had to cut the pay of all their employees, now they have green, not as speedy, uninitiated MTs doing the work. Most of the good ones have fled the scene. And here's another rant: ...

Recommendation/Suggestion
Apr 16, 2013

Everyone should make a habit of getting a letter of reference from CURRENT employers even before you are actually looking for another job.  All you have to say is that you are updating your resume and want to be sure you have current letters of reference attached as well.  It doesn't matter if you are working as an "employee", if they are happy with you and with your work, they should have no problem giving this to you.  If you are an "IC", it should be even easier since you ...

MT Pay Solution, Maybe..just A Suggestion
Jun 20, 2013

This is how we got paid at a major department store when I was a hairdresser: Guaranteed minimum wage for hours worked. If our production exceeded minimum wage we were paid a percentage of that production on top of the minimum wage, usually 40%. I would love to have MTs guaranteed at least a minimum wage for hours worked (or waiting to work) and anything we produce that exceeds that wage should be paid at the customary cpl.  This would encourage higher production, benefitting th ...

Some of you don't need me to tell you this, but others might benefit from this advice.   Reading through the posts on this coding training, I am seeing some legitimate questions and concerns, but also some that are so off the wall that they are either the product of the world's worst paranoid or someone who is intentionally trying to discourage you. The content and tone is a lot like some of the negativity that gets posted on the coding board every time some one asks about coding ...

A Suggestion For Nuance
Dec 29, 2014

You know that's your aim anyway. That way you can save money on all the middlemen and enforcers, i.e. you can stop making good QA/QC people into inquisitors. If you want to offer a true bonus, just let everyone know they will make 7 c/l, THEN offer incentives, that way at least we know we can expect the base salary and the bonus will truly be a bonus, not a penalty. There are a lot of companies that only pay that 7 cents per line, who have QA staff who are there to actually guide the MT a ...
