Everyone should make a habit of getting a letter of reference from CURRENT employers even before you are actually looking for another job. All you have to say is that you are updating your resume and want to be sure you have current letters of reference attached as well. It doesn't matter if you are working as an "employee", if they are happy with you and with your work, they should have no problem giving this to you. If you are an "IC", it should be even easier since you are obviously allowed to work for as many companies as you want!! I have all my own clients (and subcontract from 1 small MTSO), and I always make sure I have current letters on file because they are useful for me if someone contacts me about work.
For those of you working for some of these large corporations, you just never know when something could happen - lay-offs, cut backs, higher QA/production requirements, etc. It's just good to be prepared.
