Word expander software - overthehills

Posted: Jun 25, 2013

I've been using AutoCorrect as a word expander program for many years. I've started looking for word expander software, but I'm amazed at the cost of those I've seen. Anyone out there know of a good word expander that's either free or reasonably priced?

There are none that will retain formatting that are inexpensive, but you can pick up an expander for about $40 that will just do plain text.

I use IT 7 Pro and love it as you can also program commands in any format you wish to save. You can do a free 30 day trial at their Instant Text Web site. When I bought it about a year ago it was $179. If you are doing transcription, it quickly pays for itself, however if you are stuck editing, you rarely use expansion software except for occasional templates.

I use Shorthand and it is reasonable - you can try it for 30 days for free and then it has several pricing options from $6 for a month long license, $30 for 1 year and $150 for lifetime single user. I use it on 2 different computers for 2 different companies.

I use ABCZ to build my shortcuts and I have multiple "templates" including formatting built in for specific dictators and accounts.

Also, you can import your AutoCorrect into SH although I do not know how to do it. They have links on their page to several user groups for help with different features.

Also, InstantText seems to be pretty popular but I have never used it. In also has a free one month trial and you are supposed to be able to import from AutoText. Hope that helps.

IMO, OTH, considering what they do for us, they're amazingly - inexpensive. Just buy one? Way past time?nm

I sincerely appreciate the input from each of you.

I've personally had problems with Shorthand being laggy - Autocorrect user

when expanding, even with adjusting some settings, though I may not have had those tweaked perfectly.  SH probably is the gold standard for an Autocorrect-type of basic expander for medical transcription.  My Autocorrect is okay for now, but I am investigating two other options for the future, just in case, Breevy and Phrase Express.

I'd suggest that you try PhraseExpander as well. You can download a free trial at http://www.phraseexpander.com

a 1-year license. It's $29.99 I believe. And I write it off as a business expense.

Shorthand Expander Software
May 08, 2012

Hi Everyone:  I currently use Shorthand Word Expander program and I think it is interfering with the PScribe software I have to use for work.  When I am in a report and having issues like Shorthand putting in wrong upper or lower case letters, I will turn off Shorthand and then it types the right thing.  I have used Shorthand for years but I think it is now not compatible with the current program I have to use.  Has anyone had any issues like this?  ...

Hi all.  A new job has just fallen into my lap at a fortuitous time.  My regular job has fallen off drastically recently (we're all familiar with this "syndrome") and I thought I was just stuck.  Anyway, this other job uses WebChartMD platform for transcription and there is no text expander program associated with it.  My current job has a built-in TE, so I haven't had to use a commercial/free product in a long time.  I'm wondering any ya'll have any ...

Best Word Expander
Jul 08, 2011

I'm looking for a word expander that really works well with the way I want to type.  I want a word expander that expands with any trigger, i.e, space bar, apostrophe, parenthesis, period, comma, etc. I also want an expander that allows me to build on an existing word without creating an inappropriate word.  For instance, my shortcut for lymphocytes is ly.  When the VR text gives my essential, and I want to turn it into essentially, I want to be able to add the ly t ...
