Best expander software to use for editing - VRMT

Posted: Nov 11, 2009

I currently am using InstantText as that is what I used when I did straight, but I'm finding that there are limitations to IT when doing editing like you can't assign function keys, etc.  Where I currently work they mostly use Shorthand and say its better for editing. but I was wondering if anyone could weigh in with their opinions.

Sorry, but why are you using expander for VR? - VR lady

Are you using expander to retype or just what? What system are you on? I use shorthand but I don̢۪t use in VR because just not enough to expand. Hey, maybe I am doing something wrong.

I do not use expanders or the short keys either one. Can not figure out why you would use expanders as the work is already on the page unless you are completely retyping things.

Um, heck yeah, I use an expander with EditScript!

For example, when a doctor dictates a list of 27 medications and ES only puts in 8, yes ONLY 8, of them and I have to type all the rest (as happened to me last week) - then I am certainly going to use an expander for those and be glad of it.
I have heard of this but does not happen to me - VR lady

I never have complete sentences left off like some say here and leaving out several medicines, so you have a list of medicines in your expander that you just pop out there? Well, if you need it and it works, then ok. Seriously a list of 27 and only 8?
not exactly... - BadHorse
[ In Reply To ..]
No, of course I don't just have a list of 27 medications in my expander - that makes no sense at all. I have "shorts" for lots of different medications - only have to type "nx" to get Nexium, "sq" for Seroquel, etc. So that helps when you have a long list of medications.

And yes, seriously, only 8 medications in a list of 27 were there.

We all know how much you love your Escription, but you should realize that everyone's experience is not the same as yours. We have been using ES for YEARS and stuff like this happens ALL. THE. TIME.

Many sentences left off at beginning of reports. Closing paragraphs left off ends of reports. Chunks of stuff missing for no apparent reason.

It's a cr*pshoot.
Sorry for your plight, seems like you might have a - VR lady

lemon ES you have to work with. When all those medications were left off, did you notify the company you work with or just let it go? Yep, you are right, I love me some Escription. I have used now for some years, like you, probably about 5 now. Guess the system can be like cars- 1 person gets a good Chevy and the next one gets 1 that hardly works. Oh, by the way, never asked if you had 27 medicines in your expander, now that probably would have been silly of me, but just not asked.
yeah, you did - BadHorse

You said in your previous post - "so you have a list of medicines in your expander that you just pop out there?" What else did you mean by that if you didn't mean a ready-made list of medications?

Yes, we tell our company about all the problems with ES, but they don't really care. All we get is a shrug and something to the effect of "oh well, no system's perfect".
Read carefully. Never asked about a googob of medicines in expander. - VR Lady

Here are the postings: Mine: so you have a list of medicines in your expander that you just pop out there? Well, if you need it and it works, then ok. Seriously a list of 27 and only 8?

Your answer: No, of course I don't just have a list of 27 medications in my expander - that makes no sense at all.

Mine: Oh, by the way, never asked if you had 27 medicines in your expander, now that probably would have been silly of me, but just not asked.

I never asked if you had 27 medicines. I said you have some that you just pop out there and then asking if true you had 27 medicines and VR only got 8. You mentioned that would make no sense at all and yes, it most certainly did not come that way from me. Have a good day.

Anyway - expanders in Escription I use them too - 7DayMT

In many situations. I also have experienced the missing medication problem (mumbling, slurring, fast-speaking dictator). Pop in expander entry. (auto-correct).
Date comes out wrong - I have an expansion entry for each date e.g. 01/01/2009 (that format).
Sometimes a statement at the beginning or the end of the report will be missing from the draft... a statement that is always the same. I have an expansion entry.

Any part of the dictation that frequently comes out wrong, and is hard to understand, and is always the same... I have an expansion entry. Saves time looking up an old report to see what they are saying. Even if I just use it to to remind myself what they are saying.

At my old company I used my Shorthand expansion entries.
this never happened to me, VR is bad, but NOT that bad...nm - vr

You all do use software programs such as IT and SH when editing to perform various funtions like deleting words, adding periods, right? To perform commands...that is what I'm meaning.

I wrote a response about using Instant Text and VR.

All you need to do is create a "Command" entry in Instant Text. You can create a command entry in Instant Text for anything you can perform on the keyboard, delete a word (or two or three words), add periods, etc.
Nope, must be behind on using those because I - VR lady

don̢۪t use. Noticed the d1 and d2 to delete 1 or 2 words but gosh with Escription it is be on the word, hold down ALT and delete key, 1 time gets 1 word and the second hitt takes the next word off. If a doctor dictates an entire sentence and then deletes part of it simple for me without the use of special keys. I only use SH when straight typing, not with VR. I don̢۪t use the command keys, just did not want to learn.

Instant Text and VR commands - IT MT

[ In Reply To ..]
You can use function keys in Instant Text. I have some entries in my IT that are nothing but function keys.

To assign a function key, when you bring up the screen to make a new entry (or to edit an already existing entry), there will be a box towards the bottom that says "Command." Click on that and then enter whatever function key you want IT to use in that spot. IT will put it in curly brackets, i.e. {F1} or {Bksp} etc. You can use this for any function on your keyboard, function keys, backspace, up, down, etc., and you can even string them together, as many or as few as you want.

Personally, I absolutely LOVE Instant Text and think it's the best one for VR editing. I think the problem is that all expanders are limited when you're working in VR simply because of the nature of the work. But my Instant Text still does help me immensely with VR editing.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was meaning, altho.. - VRMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I have created shorts for performing certain commands in editing but my problem with IT is that all your short forms for those functions have to be alpha characters. Like I can't assign a command to F1 or whatever so I only have to hit F1 to get the command I want. In IT it doesn't seem like you can assign a command to like Cntl+/ or something either. It would be great to be able to press a single character to perform some of the most-used commands. Do you know of any way with IT to achieve this?

see message - IT MT

[ In Reply To ..]
No, you are correct in that Instant Text will not allow you to assign an expansion to a function key. I may be wrong, but I don't know of any expander that allows you to do that.

I think that is more of a matter of remapping your keyboard. I've done that too, but it depends on what platform you're working on and whether your platform will allow you to re-map your keyboard or not. Best place ask for that would be your company's systems people.

My own Instant Text editing entries are all very short, i.e. "d1" will delete one word, "d2" will delete the next two words, etc.

When you create a purely "command entry" in Instant Text, meaning there is no text in it, only function key commands, Instant text will not output anything per se, it will only perform those function commands that you have included in that entry.

I hope I understood your question clearly, I think I need another cup of coffee :-)

I tried what you wrote here with the function for the delete command. Will you tell me, however, how you get the delete command to delete an entire word versus one letter? For instance, when I put in the word "delete" twice (with a command), it deletes 2 letters. I am obviously doing something wrong!

Thanks!
Control delete button will take out the entire word and - Answers

alt delete will take out 1 letter on the word.
An example for you - IT MT
[ In Reply To ..]
The command "Delete" by itself will only delete by one character at a time.

The command "Control-Delete" will delete one entire word to the right. When you enter this into your Instant Text it should look like this (with the curly brackets):
{Ctrl Delete}

If you want to create an entry that will delete two entire words to the right, just enter the Control-Delete command twice, so it looks like this:
{Ctrl Delete}{Ctrl Delete}

You can string together as many as you need, according to how many words you want the entry to delete.

The "Control-Delete" will delete one word to the right.

If you want it to delete one word to the left, use "Control-Backspace" instead.

Oh, I really appreciate your help! It would have taken me years to figure this out. LOL Do you have a guidebook for Instant Text or do you just figure all this out on your own?? I should dig
up my IT original case.

Thanks!
IT expander user files - IT MT
[ In Reply To ..]
There is an actual (paper book) user guide for Instant Text, but all of that information is also in your IT program itself. Just click on "Help" on the IT toolbar and that will take you into all of the help files. They've really done an excellent job with all of their instructions and explanations.

I can't ever say that I'm an expert on Instant Text, because there's always new things that I end up learning, but I've been using IT since it first came out, so I guess that I've got a lot of experience with it under my belt.

IT is truly my favorite program and I think probably the best and most powerful one out there. And the Instant Text developers are always listening to the MTs and using that feedback to constantly make new improvements to it.

They also do have a website and their own Instant Text user forum, so if there are ever any questions that you have, you can always feel free to ask over there too. Some of the nicest people there who will take time to answer absolutely any questions that you have.

I have been using IT for 5 years and have probably only utilized 20% of its abilities. I didn't even realize the instructions are right on my own computer! LOL I am going to check out their forum. I really do appreciate your help!! I also love Instant Text.

Shorthand Expander Software

Hi Everyone:  I currently use Shorthand Word Expander program and I think it is interfering with the PScribe software I have to use for work.  When I am in a report and having issues like Shorthand putting in wrong upper or lower case letters, I will turn off Shorthand and then it types the right thing.  I have used Shorthand for years but I think it is now not compatible with the current program I have to use.  Has anyone had any issues like this?  ...

Voice Recognition "editing Software" Is A Joke

Voice recognition "editing software" is the bright idea of some computer software chump who knows nothing about medical transcription.  Transcription is everchanging.  No words are EVER pronounced exactly the same way each time.  Even the same voice, dialects, and dictators change from minute to minute.  It is organic.  It is also subjective depending on who is listening.  Big business has jumped on board, as they see this as a big opportunity to ...

Do You Use An Expander?
