Who else on this board is working only for insurance? - curiousMT

Posted: Oct 18, 2013

Is it just me or are there many others who are slaving over this job for the insurance (as pathetic as it is) ?  I wonder how many will leave and become IC when ACA is implemented?  Any pros to ACA?  I have only heard negative comments about the deductibles, OOP, etc.   Really wanting some non-biased, honest replies.  Thanks :)

Do not work for the insurance at all - Kendra

and will not have the Obamacare so to speak because covered under my husband's insurance and already notified no change has to be made on our end. Having said that, I did hear that provisions were written into Obamacare with exemptions for low income, no income because of loss of job and the like.

I'm an IC and have signed up with a plan via the "marketplace". The premium is $500 per month less than the plan we are currently on. The annual deductible ($5k per couple) is the same, which we have in a savings account.

There are so many plans and variables among the marketplace offerings in the states and fed that a decision cannot be made on what one "hears."

Edited to add - my husband has not worked in 2 yrs due to a medical condition but is not on disability. I'm still making great $$$ but that will end in December. IF I can't find a job with benefits, we will qualify for further cost reductions thanks to ACA.

That's a lot more costly than what I have now. - curiousMT

I couldn't afford that at all. Your info is pretty much what I have been "hearing". Hoping for better.

What's your monthly premium, OV copay - and OOP for

[ In Reply To ..]
everything else? A lot of people are getting frightened by annual deductible because they don't understand it.
I'm not certain what the OV is as I have not - curiousMT

gone back for over a year. I can't afford a single extra expense as everything is going to pay down my OOP expense and deductible from a surgery I had last year. I think it's $35 but the deductible went up to $5000.00 and can't afford that debt if something needs fixing. Only have insurance for me. Spouse is uninsured.
What happens if you end up in the ER? - worseoff
[ In Reply To ..]
. I fainted in the grocery store in town. The volunteer ambulance and paramedics came. The paramedics charged $2500 (still disputing). The total cost of ER was $11k for a monitored bed, CXR, carotid US, blood work, O2, skull x-ray, ER doc, cardio and neuro consult, IV fluids.

If your individual deductible is $5k, then you likely would find something cheaper in the marketplace - like half that for yourself.
I think my ER is only covered if admitted to hospital - curiousMT

if not admitted then pay full price.

I'm working for the insurance for the family. - ETOHPRN

The days of working for general betterment of the household, groovy vacations, and the "American Dream" are over for my family. Now I'm working to simply try and maintain, and it gets harder every month to even do that.

It can be depressing if I let the whole materialistic thing get in the way, so I try to keep that song "Simple Gifts" playing in the back of my mind while I try to raise my daughter to enjoy the little pleasures in life. :)

We keep the bad influences to a minimum...No TV. No magazines. Get basic shopping done WITH A LIST, stick to it, and get out. Take care of what you have, including our bodies, and keep things simple. Or try to anyway :D

no insurance through work - sorry to say

I work for one of thos MTSO companies that do not give us insurance, so I am working a second job to pay for my insurance premium, which it is just me, 5k deductible and I am $305 now (having gone up when I turned 60) and will be $519 in January. My second job will not cover that. I hope that I will be able to get on some kind of program. And my husband passed away 10 years ago, and now that I am 60 I am old enough to get his SS but I make more than the $15,100 a year to qualify for his SS without a penalty, but I don't make enough to pay bills and survive. How pathetic. Anyone know if the $15,100 will go up soon so that I do not have to worry about how much tax I will be paying at the end of the year?

I'll be eligible for Medicare in 6 mos...sm - Anony

so until then I am pretty much working for health insurance and, of course, the income. I never thought I'd be this happy to be 65.

Single Payer - OldIsGood

If only our law makers would have thought more of the people than their special interests, we all would be on single payer universal healthcare which is practically identical to Medicare instead of this bogus ACA which few can afford.

sorry to say -- sometjhing in your post that I noticed - nn

I believe that you might be incorrect with something and that is being able to collect on your late husband's SS at age 60. I am in the process of applying/filing for SSDI at age 58. I also asked the SS rep about obtaining my late husband's SS benefits and she said that for that, I was to apply 3 months before my 62nd birthday, which in essence, would also be the time that I would file for early SS, so you may want to do some checking on that.

SS benefits as a widow/er - OldsterMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Based on a friend's information, you can collect from a deceased spouse's SS benefits at age 60. This should be a federal guideline, so whomever was told age 62 should double check this. And everyone should file a couple of months ahead of their birth date month.
Yes... it is - age 60 IF
[ In Reply To ..]
you had been married for 10 years and not remarried at the time of your ex-husband's passing, AND if you had not already applied against your OWN SS benefits, as in SS disability or early retirement. Loopholes.

The information that I posted about was from a SS representative. The situation is very goofy with my late husband anyway as he was 21 years in the military, so more than likely what he earned in SS, would be next to nothing. I'm also in the process of talking to an attorney who specializes in military law because of the fact that I am recognized as his dependent with regards to insurance, commissary, etc., however we were only married 5 months before he passed away from cancer. I have found there is a new law or some such thing that if the surviving spouse "cohabitated with the veteran continously until the veteran's death" that I MAY be eligible to receive his retirement pay that way -- I am really hoping that I can get some positive answers that way, because he passed in March of 1997 and at that time was receiving a bit over $1000 in retirement pay.
ss benefits - sorry to say
[ In Reply To ..]
My husband passed away and we were only married 2 years although together 25 and I am able to collect his SS as I have already checked, and can apply anytime after 60 as long as it would be feasible for me to do that (make a little too much) and SS also told me to take his SS until I am 70, get my pension from my previous job when I am 66 and then get my SS at 70, even though mine will be more than my late husband's. Because of the new Obama stuff, my health insurance will be going up from 300 to 519 and will need some help there, so may have to breakdown and take my husband's SS even though I will have to be paying taxes and not getting a whole lot. SS take the difference between what I make and 15,100, take half of that difference off the top and then when they have got that, they I will start to receive the rest after that is satisfied. So I think I will be signing up soon.

I learned my lesson years ago about insurance - Linda

[ In Reply To ..]
I was young, had 2 young children, thought I could not afford insurance. I worked inhouse at a hospital. My son broke his shoulder in a fall, requiring 2 hospital stays with surgery both times. It so happened that I worked part-time for the orthopedic surgeon who did his surgery free of cost, the hospital took so much out of my pay every 2 weeks until I paid that off. From that day forward I had insurance. I could not afford to let an emergency happen like that again without coverage. If not for the surgeon and my working at the hospital, I would be in some serious financial strains that I would not be able to overcome then.

I was - but not anymore

Question On Insurance. My Last Day Of Working

Health Insurance Agent Working From Home.
Jan 06, 2015

I just got off the phone with my health insurance company agent at HealthLink.  She is working from home!  I should have asked what qualifications someone need to do this line of work, but didn't think to ask at that time.  I wonder if coding or transcription/medical terminology experience would be a requirement.  I had called to ask how much my deductible will be for an upcoming outpatient surgery.  She was able to look at my account and tell me the deductible amou ...

Did You Previously Have Humana Health Insurance, Before Working For M*Modal?
Jul 26, 2012

Sorry to be repetitive.  I posted this on the Main Board but haven't gotten any responses there, so I'm re-posting it here where more M*Modal folks might notice it(?).   I got a letter a couple days ago from Humana about a rebate for a portion of the health insurance premiums which I had at my last job--the rebate apparently required  by the Affordable Care Act.  The letter has a lot of additional mumbo-jumbo, not all of which I understand.   It says to "cont ...

Does Anybody Out There Actually Have A Working Swap Board With A Long Schedule Posted?
Apr 29, 2010

Does anybody out there actually have a working swap board with a long schedule posted?  I'm getting so frustrated with this supposedly wonderful tool for us to have.  My schedule is never posted farther out than my current work week nor are any available shifts listed farther out than that.  I'm really starting to wonder why the CCM is dragging feet so much.  CCM has mentioned everything from "unsure schedules are correct" to "waiting for all the kinks to get out."  However, any t ...

Health Insurance As An IC

I am considering becoming self employed (after a fashion) as an IC.  I have gone onto www.healthcare.gov and gone through the steps they advise when you want to take out private insurance.  Holy cow, the insurance plans offered varied in premium cost from $600 to $4000 per month for a family of 4, but the thing that got me was two items:  Maximum out of pocket for individual: 0$.  Annual deductible for individual: 0$.  Woohoo.  This just seems too good to be true.&n ...
