What type of computer do you use for MT? - Jo

Just curious as to what type of computers you experienced MTs use for your work. I've been doing this for 13 years now, and my desktop is getting close to retirement.

I bought a new Gateway all-in-one last year. I really love it. The screen is huge and I like not having the tower underneath.
I alternate between a - desktop and a laptop

although I would probably eliminate the desktop altogether at this point, as I hate feeling chained to the desk and finding doing the editing is much more endurable if I can vary my work setting. I would check to see what OS is required for your work before purchasing any new computer. I hear laptops now are a bargain, because they also are being used less and less, so you could probably get a good one fairly cheap.

I was considering a laptop but am afraid I would have a hard time getting used to it since I've always used a wireless ergonomic keyboard. Bear, you're right though - would be great for mobility. I had the feeling that desktops were getting to be extinct, but maybe not. I think I just need both (I wish)! Thanks for your replies.
you probably should get some computer basics. you can use your - keyboard wireless or not with a laptop sm

I use a laptop with USB connected keyboard, mouse, printer, footpedal(s). The only difference between desk top and lap top is size - one can be loaded with anything the other has and most often come with the same preloaded gems. Bluetooth for wireless peripherals, including modem, standard issue. And, of course, desktop stays near the outlet.
Personally, I cannot wait to quit this so called work and get an Apple computer, but that's me.
Why would you not be able to use - your

wireless keyboard with a laptop? I don't understand the problem. Anything you can use with a desktop you can use with a laptop if you have the right connectors.
I use a keyboard with my laptop sometimes - You just plus in the USB connector

When I dog sit for my sister, I pack my laptop up and take it to her house and work on that. I just plug my keyboard in and push the laptop itself back a little so I can see the screen, but am using the keyboard. It's much easier than trying to re-learn the keyboard of the laptop when I do that.
Want to use a laptop. - Please sm

I loved the mobility a laptop allows. Living in a rainy region, working on the patio on a rare warm, sunny day was so wonderful. Unfortunately, my current company supplies the computer and it is a desktop--too much of a hassle to transport from basement, transport back during shift in evening. As another poster wrote, though, check with your IT for the OS and other technical specifications before buying. Happy computer hunting!

I keep everything work-related in my office on a new HP Windows 7 desktop model. For the sake of focus, I find keeping everything work-related into one area beneficial, at least for me. I know when I'm at my desk on that desktop, that's "work time."
I'm so easily distracted that if I tried to work on with any mobility on a laptop, I'd never get anything done. Without structure, I'm useless.

I am also wondering what, if any, companies use Apple computers. I use a laptop computer and love it.
it's not if the company uses Apple computers, it's Microsoft Windows - that is the key. last time I looked

you had to buy the Apple computer and then Windows whatever version, and then MS Office. The two boys didn't play well together and split. One rules the world but the other is better in my eyes.
I am needing to replace my computer-- my desktop is so slow it is really nonfunctional and I fried my laptop. My question is, I would prefer to buy another laptop but if I wanted to do work from home, does a laptop really suffice? Is it possible to hook up a wireless mouse and real keyboard to it, and is it possible to connect a foot pedal to it? If not, I will need to look at desktops.
Thanks for any advice anyone can give out there! ...
This may have been asked and answered previously but I am going to lose my long-term account because of EMR in about 2 years and I am not going down without a fight. Why can't I type their transcription as usual, then the reports can be scanned into the computer/EMR? Any information would be greatly appreciated....thanks! ...
I read that Medmedx supplies computers but you can only have Cable or DSL connection.
I live in an area where I cannot get cable or DSL. I have a wireless connection.
My question is, do they allow you to use our own computers?
Thanks for your time and have a great day? ...
The reason I ask this question is for my internet I have a USB modem. Do the computers supplied by Q have any extra USB ports so I can plug my Verizon in there?

I am in the process of transitioning jobs and will be going from a company-provided computer to my own. Any suggestions on what software programs are needed, virus protection, word expanders, line counting, and hardware like foot pedal? The hospital I am looking into will be using Microsoft Word. Any comments on whether this is a good program or not to transcribe on? Any tips? I have been with the same company for 15 years, so have been out of the loop and need ...
Wondering if anyone out there has any feedback about working for Silent Type? I have done the test and have been told I will interview in two weeks when the position becomes available... I think there is a mandatory 2 day training in NJ? Anyone done this and survived? How's the pay? I was considering going to work for MedQuist because they are taking over one of my current IC accounts but after reading in the MedQuist section I think I'll skip that one. Th ...

I leave my computer up and running all the time. In the past week every morning I am having to reboot because I get an error saying "insufficient system resources to perform this action." As soon as it finally reboots, then everything is fine, I can log onto DQS and type all day with no problems. Then it sits again all night, and the same thing happens the next morning.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? Tech support has already increased the virtual memory capa ...

I was just wondering how old some computers are that are having problems with 6.1 and if there are people with newer computers that handles it better. Mine is a MQ computer that is 4 years old now and it bogs down quite a bit. Everything is sluggish now. I do have 1 GB of ram and 1.84 GHz, so 6.1 shouldn't take a toll on it as bad as it is. I'm just wondering if I should ask the Q for an upgrade, if that is the problem. Knowing the RAM and proces ...
Need help!
I don't use an MQ computer, since they don't want you to put anything personal on it, and most of my life, including banking, is on my computer. My 4-year-old computer crashed and is in the shop for a couple days, and I decided maybe it's time to get a new one. The problem is, DQS requires a 32-bit system, and so far all the new computers I've found are all Windows 7, which is 64 bits. I also want to get a slimline, since it kills my ...
I turned off the "check as you go" spelling feature to get rid of that distracting wiggly red line. When I upload a document, and a mis-spelling is picked up, what's with all the lame suggestions. I mean either there just aren't any suggestions at all for a simple mis-spelled word with a single wrong letter, or just a simple word. What happened to the old Q dictionary? It seems every 5 years their dictionary gets worse. When I started 10 years ag ...

Does anyone use a Mac for medical transcription with Windows XP and MT software that requires nothing newer than XP? Also any experience with Windows XP and Medrite XL on a newer computer using Windows 7 and virtual xp? Needing advice before replacing my old computer, which I'm afraid might give out. I would just load XP but supposedly will be transferring to software compatible with Windows 7 sometime in the future. Any ideas appreciated.

Got my new computer. Got my flash drive. Want to transfer my favorites, my documents to the new computer. I got the favorites transferred, but can't get the documents. Went to My Documents, Properties, Move to, but according to some instructions I read, it's supposed to ask you are you sure you want to move? or something like that. My old computer died a couple of weeks ago and I had to go out and purchase a new one with Windows 7.
