EMR question - why can't the reports I type for my private account be scanned into a computer? - desertfox

Posted: Jan 28, 2012

This may have been asked and answered previously but I am going to lose my long-term account because of EMR in about 2 years and I am not going down without a fight. Why can't I type their transcription as usual, then the reports can be scanned into the computer/EMR? Any information would be greatly appreciated....thanks!

It isn't as easy as just scanning the reports. They'd have to be parsed and run through other software before they could be utilized like the EMR allows. So you're saying, continue to pay me, add 4 steps and umpteen man hours, and call it equal. It just isn't.

okay, i guess i should educate myself on exactly how the EMR will work - desertfox

i really don't know the steps involved in the record-keeping end of what EMR requires so this is good - the docs I type for are STRONGLY against entering their own reports into EMR and will drag their feet to the last possible second to be compliant, which I guess is good for me. Just wanted to know if I could help them and also help myself keep my job...

Scanned Documents - Briana

This can be done, but not by ordinary scanning methods. What we normally think of as "scanning" is really taking a picture of a document much as if you used a camera. What this means is that the scanned "document" file does not contain text information, but graphical information, something like the position of dots on a page.

As such, this document cannot be "read" by the EMR software without conversion back into a text format. This is done by means of OCR - optical character recognition, and there's OCR software out there. The OCR process is assisted if the original document is a form (so that certain text appears at set locations on the page), and by using certain highly recognizable font types.

EMR companies recognize not only the advantage of being able to handle your situation, but also the need to convert older records, and scanning is obviously the way to accomplish this. So, they are working hard on creating modules that will facilitate scanning and this would certainly be a feature that your docs would want to look at when deciding which EMR software to buy.

thanks for the info and I have been reading up on all this including DRT - desertfox

I certainly appreciate your response - gives me more info to present to my doctors...

Are you talking about printing your work out on paper? Are you still using a typewriter?

Or are you using a computer? And are you aware that the file itself is the document? That it can be used by an EHR?

As the above respondent said, scanning means taking a picture. That is nearly useless. You can look at it but not much else. If you are used to typing on paper or printing on paper and never using the computer file again, you would not realize the significance of that.

My organization is fully EHR. We have huge transcription contracts. They upload the efile into the EHR. They transcribe in Word then upload the document. It is the same as if they typed it directly into the EHR. A lot of doctors prefer this for longer reports like consultations and procedures.

You should learn about EHRs. Digging your heels in and threatening a fight is not going to get you anywhere you want to go. They will just fire you if you cannot adapt.

My suggestion would be to increase your value to them and to yourself by broadening your skill set. One area is in informatics. Who will run the new EHR? It is a computer system. It will require a manager. It will require troubleshooting and the providers at your office will need help using it. It will require someone to interface with the vendor.

There are programs right now which are completely or partially funded by the government to train people to do that. They are primarily certificate programs about a year long. You need to do one of those programs.

If you do, perhaps you can remain employed. You could work for your current office or move. You could continue that education and advance.

Google HITECH. Look for the programs and colleges offering them. They are online. You already have a lot of relevant background. Also look for Bellevue College. That is one of the schools involved in this. They describe the programs.

Then talk to your office about the possibility of converting to a computer specialist for the EHR. This will be a great help to them. If you begin NOW instead of wasting time trying to turn back the clock, you would be ready. If they are not interested, do it yourself so you can get another job.

Another option would be learning coding. That would enable you to move on.

Either option is good. Both would enable you to use the knowledge for further advancement

Long ASR Reports Bogging Down Computer

Does anybody else have the problem of long ASR reports, greater than 10 minutes, gradually start slowing things down the farther you get into it?  It has gotten to the point where I can't even type.  It takes awhile for any changes to even show up on screen and the audio will keep playing for awhile even if my foot isn't on the pedal.  ...

Are There Any Hospital Clients That Actually Care About The MTs That Type Their Reports?
Apr 07, 2010

The hospital (client) of the company I type for, just updated their system.  This was a so-called big deal.  I was excited because they use a program that I know has potential to make a lot more shortcuts and less mouse use available for the MTs, that they did not utilized, but today, I started typing on the "new updated" version just to find there are more fields I have to fill in on the patient profile screen, there is more mouse use, and more looking up, and going out of the program ...

MQ Delisted From NYSE, CBay Gone Private
Jan 17, 2012

My husband and I stay up on the stock market and I have been watching MQ and Cbay for about a year.   I just noticed today that they have been delisted and gone to pink sheet which means their stock consistently fell below the $5.00 mark.  Just a year ago it was $16.  Also, CBay has gone private and claims it is an American Company.  It is not, it is now privately owned by an Indian company doing business with corporate offices in London.  I don't know what thi ...

? About Working For A Private Doctor's Office
Apr 15, 2012

I saw an opening for a medical transcriptionist for a private doctor's office in my town.  I wonder, if any of you work in a private office--won't all medical practices be going to some sort of EMR in the coming year?  This ad didn't say anything at all about EMR, but I'm kind of assuming that they'll be switching to it if they haven't already.   I've only done MT in an acute-care hospital setting, so I also wonder if a lot of smaller doctor ...

Anyone Know Why Semi-private Hospital Rooms Are Still Allowed Under HIPAA?
Oct 06, 2010

I work for one of the big MTSOs, take annual HIPAA training, and know I am subject to fines or discharge for disclosing someone else̢۪s medical info, either intentionally or accidentally such as via an incorrect C/C. I am therefore baffled as to why hospitals are still allowed to put patients in semiprivate rooms where HIPAA rules just seem to go out the window. For example, just yesterday I returned from a 23-hour overnight after an outpatient procedure at a well-regarded acute-care hos ...
