Is there any way for a company to know if you have MS Home and Office or Home and Student, etc. versus the Professional suite? I am job hunting and some companies require that you have MS Word Professional. I am not applying to these companies requiring it because I am in desperate need of a job before I lose my home and there is really no guarantee that they would employ you long enough for the program to pay for itself. I just can't afford it right now.

I have MS-Office 2013 Professional, but really the only difference I see is that I have Power-Point and a few other programs that I simply never use. I don't think there's a difference in the word processing part at all. I think you'll be fine with the Home version.

I provided a link to help you better understand, but basically what you have on your computer needs to match what the company needs. A student version may not fully match the version a company has and they don't want to waste their time in the hiring process. It is not necessarily about the difference you do see, but more about the differences you don't see. An example would be having all the print drivers that manage font selections being available on your version of MS Word. You don't see the print drivers (unless you know how to look for them), but they can differ from version to version.

I bought a copy of the professional version on eBay for 20 bucks (you may be able to find it cheaper). It was the 2003 version, and it was unopened. Like someone else said, it is a compatability issue.

I hadn't tried eBay yet, but I may look into it even if I have to pick up change in the WM parking lot and out of the Coke machines. I literally have no money to spare right now.

I hadn't thought about it not being compatible with some of the drivers in the platform. That's a good point. You know, you could just come out and ask the recruiter if there's any your version would work with their platform. Maybe it's just their "preference" and not really mandatory. I sure don't know, but I think I'd go ahead and ask. Let us know what you find out.

I asked about the compatibility issue. She said that as far as her company there was no compatibility issue that she was aware of. The problem is that using MS Home and Office or anything other than the Professional version is technically illegal because it would be used in a commercial manner.

I haven't trained yet for new versions but I think I read somewhere we no longer have to worry so much about account specifics i.e. formatting for ROS, bolds or caps for headings. I downloaded the new version of Smartype, and I need to figure out how you get something not to expand like say if you type pm and it expands it but you don't want it to. The older version you could type the word and press the shift key while pressing the spacebar and it would not expand, but it does not work that way on this version. Is someone able to help me with playing .rm or .ra files in Express Scribe? I have tried everything to download one file into Express Scribe. I got a new computer a couple weeks ago with Windows 7 and IE 8.
