The future - 16TRANSCRIBER
Posted: Mar 19, 2014
Hello to everyone on MTStars. I've been reading all these posts for weeks. My hospital announced in Jan. that we would get laid off in July b/c they had decided to go with M*Modal. After everything I have read here you could not beat me with a stick to apply for M*Modal; even though that is what they wanted us to do. I've come to terms with it. I am at peace. I have been transcribing for 16 years, and have made EXCELLENT money, $25-30/hour. If this is the end, I accept it. We live in a small town. My husband has a really good job. I have such a bad taste in my mouth with the medical records department now that I really don't think I want a job in healtcare. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE MY JOB!!!!! I love my bosses!!!!! It is all about the money for coporate. I know this. With that said, I am totally thinking of becoming a substitute teacher. Unfortunately, due to new regulations you can only sub 3 days a week instead of 5. I believe the pay is very low. Here like $75/day. But, I would be off in the summer/weekends with my two small children who are in elementary school. I even thought that I would love to get a job in the cafeteria at the school becoming a "lunchroom lady" or child nutrition worker as they are called these days. I would be taking a huge paycut, but my children come first. Just throwing some thoughts out there.
I totally get ya there! - Tink

I currently work for MM and have started looking for a job in the school system as I have several children in school and the future here at MM isn't quite certain. With the way our work schedules are, I can't even attend all of our kids' programs for school, am working just about every holiday, and am usually working when the kids are home. They grow up so fast. I have to work because we need the money, but I'd love to do it in a way that I can actually spend time with my family instead of being here at home, but not really "being here" if you know what I mean. I don't make much the way it is because I work part-time, so pretty much anything would be a pay increase! Go for it and best wishes to you to find something good!!

You will be sorrier than sorry if you work for N or M. I left a couple of years ago.
Back in the day, I was making about what you were at the hospital, but from home working for the M. When I left 2 years ago, I was barely pulling minimum wage.
Best of luck to you.

You will make less than minimum wage with the way N is set up. Also worked for M and not much better. Take the teaching job 3 days a week. It will be way more than what N will allow you to make through their Fiesa and audits. Best of luck. You have made the right decision.
Smart decision - anon

I was also making $25-30 an hour on production and loved my job up until 2011 (25 years of experience). Fast forward and ended up at M*Modal through a merger. Within weeks, I was taken off the accounts I was familiar with and given 20+ primary accounts/facilities from New Hampshire to Alaska, all with different client specifics. After dealing with nitpicky QA (yes, errors such as "a", "the", commas and semicolons yet 99.6(!) accuracy expected), terrible VR on their Fluency platform, working every holiday, punching in and out with "active" keyboard time monitored, and making minimum wage, I quit. I wasn't even making $75 a day! The stories are true.
With MM, you also have to work - holidays unless you can BEG off

I would totally be the lunchroom lady, given the choice between MMoral and my kids.
With MM - I would clean toilets!

Anything would be better than working for MM and I agree, I think what you are trying to do is great. That would be a fun job too, unlike what transcription has become and so sad it has, as it was a very good job at one time. I am retired and only work part time and that does take the sting out a bit and I don't do voice, only straight transcription and no ESLs. I feel very fortunate, but this will be my last MT job. Senior companion care here I come!

You know, I thought about being a senior companion. I am looking at anything to fit the schedule of my children. I would jump on a cafeteria position, and when we finally do get laid off I will collect my unemployment and put in my application with the school system for that and a sub. Benefit of living in a small town is that people know what a hard worker I am. I don't care what my job is, I am going to do it well. I have been SO blessed to be a transcriptionist with outstanding pay for 16 years. My children 9/4 have never had any other caregiver but me, and I am not even considering a job that would take me away from being their sole caregiver. We are in a really good point in our lives. My husband just got transferred to an office 2 minutes from our home, which is hundreds of dollars a month saved in gas. All of our public schools in this small county are literally 2 minutes from our home. My youngest child 4/boy will play ball next year and that is a lot of afternoons and Saturdays. I just stand back amazed at how everything is falling in place with my husband's transfer and everything wrapping up so nicely. I told him God was moving the chess pieces around b/c it was SO obvious. Don't get me wrong, if my hospital decides to keep us a while longer I am all there b/c my schedule already fits my children perfectly, but I think those papers have been signed and it is a done deal. I am kind of looking forward to getting out of the house and having the sun shine on my face for the first time in 16 years. During the early part of my career I worked in-house and they called us "the closet children". Ha ha. I'm going to miss my hospital family, but life goes on. I'm ready to go out and meet people b/c as you can tell I am a talker. I appreciate everyone just reading these posts and allowing people to vent. After all, we are the ones who understand that all of our knowledge will be put on a shelf now. That part is kind of sad, but as I told my supervisor..."I'm looking out for #1."

I have been transcribing for 26 years. The large companies (and I have worked for many) demand so much of us these days. You MUST know the BOS Guidelines, the company you work for Guidelines and then the client's guidelines for every account. You must uphold the HIPAA laws and guidelines and the large companies only want you for voice recognition. Voice recognition is twice the work and half the pay of text transcription (we type). Voice recognition is taking over. I say if they love VOICE RECOGNITION so very much, then why not just let those UGLY reports go straight to the charts without editing? It is not worth my time to be independent contractor (which we really are not independent when they tell us how much we will make. Independent contractor should be us offering our services for a fee and not them telling us. It only protects them from having to file our taxes for us and pay us insurance. That is the purpose of IC.) I think medical transcription voice recognition is here to stay and I think it should NOT be edited. They should develop a program then that does not need editing. The pay is just not worth it. I never encourage younger women these days to go to their local colleges and take the 1 year course to become a medical transcriptionist. I tell them the reality of this industry. When hospitals started outsourcing (the beginning of our troubles here in the USA), we should have just let them go because many of them have come back to the USA for better transcription. We should have held our course that this is a trained specialty and it should have remained "text" only and at the same rates we have always been paid but someone caved in and the corporate world decided that if they could save the facilities and doctors money and then pay us nothing for editing, then the large corporation of transcription makes a bundle of money. It is all about what they can do for them and the transcriptionist will buy the story that VR is twice as fast as actually typing the report from scratch. That is all rubbish. Sorry, I believe that the good days of transcription are over and I too am leaving the industry. You can make more money at your local Wal-Mart store.
I actually applied at Wal-Mart LOL but I'm not qualified, go figure. - see message

I keep going back and forth on whether I should stay an MT or get out completely (as it's the only job I have and need the insurace and pay, however low it is). I made a pros and cons the other day, listed all of the good, the bad, and the ugly and came up with 20 pros and 45 cons (just my own personal experience with a "good" MTSO). I guess that answers my question. When I give my notice, it will be short and sweet. If they ask why (if they care), I will just say "job security." I have 30 years till retirement and I KNOW MT/editing will be long gone by then so I'm taking the first job I can get. That's kinda sad it came down to this. I just wish I knew 10 years ago before I wasted my time learning to become an MT. Oh well, lesson learned I guess. I can at least take away something from it.

I sadly made that post and enjoyed the 26 years in this field, but it is just not the same anymore. This is a skilled job and just anyone out there cannot do it without the training. Voice recognition will never be perfect either. The industry gets what they pay for.

IT IS SO WORTH IT, your plans. THE MT field is corrupted by corrupt CEOs and VPs and companies that are more worried about the bottom line than their workers OR EVEN the patients they claim concern for. Good move and God bless in your MT-less pursuits!

Future Of MTs Jun 06, 2013Iâve been doing more research into the future of the MT field and I find that it is morphing into something I do not want to be a part of. The Future Of MTs - Is There One? Jan 18, 2014I am a former MT who is going to school for Health Informatics. I worked as a transcriptionist for over 20 years. Future Net - Anybody Still There? May 08, 2014Anybody still there? After months of shoving MModal down our throats they just sent an email out on how to fix the spellchecker in the program! Do you think that should have been done before forcing this on MTs? Looks like there is no turning back, they are just forcing the issue and you can either make less than minimum wage, WAY less, or take a hike as many of us have been told. Is This The Future? May 20, 2014I am beginning to think that the future with VR and point-and-click plus offshoring means that the work that is remaining will be just a little bit from a bunch of different accounts, meaning we have to navigate through a bunch of different account specs for those MTs left. My old account went completely offshore, the new account I was transferred to went completely over to Epic and my new assignment has me with 3 accounts and the work is dried up so I will have to ask for more. Future Of MT Mar 25, 2015Well, just saw a report on my local news that one of the hospitals in my area is trying out the Dragon Medical voice/rec system, where they are doing it directly at the hospital right into the medical record. Allegedly it is just a pilot program, but it showed the doctor looking at a computer screen and dictating into the machine, and the text would appear directly on the computer. Then he can read what he said and put it directly into the chart. Then any doctor in the hospital ...
Is There Really A Future For MT Work? Feb 03, 2010I don't mean to start a downer post here, but I sincerely want to know if there is a future for MT work.
I see posts by a few who have succeeded, at least somewhat, in the MT world. However, these are very few. Could this just be the company losing accounts and placing t ...
