Temp job that pays well - alicia

Posted: Aug 19, 2013

I was hired as a recruiter for a large cancer nonprofit that holds walk-a-thons. It is a 3-month temporary position and I was allowed to choose the hours, anywhere from 20 to 40 hrs a week. It involves reaching out to corporations and individuals and asking them for in-kind or monetary donations as well as participating in the walk-a-thon itself. Most of the contacts are repeat donors and are happy to get the call to join in the event again. Participation with the event is also required - setting up, shmoozing with sponsors, participants and their families, working information booths, etc. These walkathons are held throughout the country, too, so one might be happening in your neck of the woods. The pay offered was $16-20/hr and I asked for and was hired at $20 thanks to some volunteer work I did with a mentoring program. The organization I'm working for is one of many that hold events that require recruitment. The work can be exhausting - I was on the phone for 35 or 40 hrs I worked, but I love the work and it is definitely a foot-in-the-door type of job that, for me, is meaningful, pays well and won't be offshored. People I work with are great, too.

Well Paying Temp Job - CAncer Victim

I know you are very working hard for your salary but you are doing good work. If it were not for the help of such organizations as these, I would not have been able to afford to undergo chemotherapy even though I do have insurance. SSDI is a joke, they don't consider cancer a serious illness and they felt there was no reason for me not to work while undergoing chemotherapy, so no help there. (Which even if I hadn't been so weak and so sick, I could not have done anyway thanks to chemo brain) but thanks to these wonderful volunteer organizations there was hope. They gave me a check every month that was enough to pay my rent and utilities, and cover basic expenses. Thank you.

I wish nothing but the best for you! - alicia

You brought tears to my eyes. I have yet to meet any of the direct beneficiaries of this fundraiser but your post just made the hard work seem like a walk in the park. Being such a cynic, I often wondered how well the money raised was being spent so it's great to hear about the help you received. I hope you heal and get stronger each day and that cures for these insidious diseases are found soon.

I am so glad to see there are organizations out there that still help people. I am always afraid to give to charities because I don't know if the money actually goes to them or not. So I shy away from it. But I would love to donate something to the organization that helped you when you needed it so they can continue to help others in this way.

Please email me the name of the organization that helped you so I can contact them. Can't donate much but I will still like to give something.

I wish you God speed. When life looks so gloomy with all that is happening in the world it is nice to see a ray of sunshine. Thanks for sharing.

Cancer help - Cancer (Victim) Survivor!!!

I don't mind publishing this on line, the organization(s) that helped me are the Reno Cancer Foundation and Moms on the Run as I live in Nevada. One of the great things about this was the immediate help. All I had to do was give them permission to verify that I did indeed have cancer, and that I was in need. They sent me a check that very day! There were no complex forms to fill out. They also assisted me with locating other sources of help such as the American Cancer Society who provided me with reading material, a wig, and lots of hats and scares (as many as I wanted.) I am of the opinion that the govt, despite all the money it spends, is rather useless when your need is really desperate and immediate. Even if they had decided that cancer was as serious as say, depression, TMJ syndrome or whiplash, it would have been months and months before I received any assistance from them. Also, my nurse navigator was a great help. The only real fly in my cancer ointment was The Hartford which handled my FLMA. They nearly got me fired!

Good thing I don't work for Nuance, their punitive QA would probably give me my cancer back!

Temp Job Outside Of MT?
Jan 29, 2013

I, like many here, would like to transition out of this industry, but it's not an urgent need or anything. I'm considering applying to a local university (large)as a 911 dispatcher. I have experience that matches the requirements. But, bummer, it's only temporary, 4 months. Has anyone had the experience of a temp job turning into a permanent one? I realize no-one has the answers, just curious about others' experiences. ...

I Had An Interview Today, Its In-house, Temp, To Catch Up. Sm
Jul 24, 2013

I am still reeling from this sit-down.  I interviewed with the hiring manager of a huge medical group in this fairly large city.  I got her opinion on the future of MT.  This group wants to get caught up on everything because they are converting to EHR.  So, there is a temp position available.  Its $18 an hour.  Just like the old days.   She told me that, as a manager, in her opinion, MT is gone.  She was a true skeptic and had a wait and see attitude abo ...

To all you are wondering if it can happen.  Yes, it can and it did for me.  I was just hired for my first coding job!!!  I am only half way through my AHIMA coding course but I have 20 years of acute care transcription experience.  I applied for every job that came up even if I did not meet the requirements.  Only a few responded, but that is okay.  It only takes one.  I was really surprised that I even was offered the chance to test.  My first test was a ...

SGS Pays SOME MTs Minimum Wage
Nov 27, 2011

On a post below about SGS, an MT states that she is being paid minimum wage.  She states she had to 'fight' for it, however, they are paying her minimum wage on the accounts where she is scheduled, and expected, to sit in front of her computer when there is very little work. I have asked several coworkers about this, and some of them are being paid minimum wage, as well.  Not all; only the ones who requested (demanded) it. THERE GOES ALL MTSO CLAIMS THAT SINCE WE' ...
