Temp job outside of MT? - lovetolive

Posted: Jan 29, 2013

I, like many here, would like to transition out of this industry, but it's not an urgent need or anything. I'm considering applying to a local university (large)as a 911 dispatcher. I have experience that matches the requirements. But, bummer, it's only temporary, 4 months. Has anyone had the experience of a temp job turning into a permanent one? I realize no-one has the answers, just curious about others' experiences.

I wanted to be a dispatcher too. - sm

Can you please tell me the requirements in order to get the job? Thanks.

I've had 2 really good FT office jobs in the past that came out of temp work and also several offers.

A couple of hints to roll temp work into FT--be nice to everyone, even if they're a complete jerk to you. Don't have an attitude. Don't complain about being asked to do something. Don't complain about the jerky people in the office. Offer to work extra hours (if possible). Don't pass gossip on. Don't talk too much about any problems you have outside of work. Be sure you are early to work every day. Don't take long lunches. If you don't know, ask--don't wing it.

I am in no way saying you personally would do anything opposite of what I listed above, but if you haven't done temp work before and haven't been around other temps, you'll be surprised at some of the shenanigans that go on. Just a heads up.

Hey, thank you for the advice. Appreciate that. I must admit I have lost tolerance for BS not having to deal with it working at home, so just reading it provides some clarity.

As far as the job requirements, I believe that each position will probably have a unique set of requirements, but they are pretty general apart from specific dispatcher protocols. I have dispatcher experience, but I can see learning this type of job even without that.

No prob. I loved temping. It's the best way to job test. I never understood why more people didn't temp. 911 dispatching is going to be interesting! Good luck to you!

Also, two other pointers I remembered today... Don't wear stripper shoes because you "love the sparkelies" and don't smoke pot in the parking lot on your break. =] I'm surprised I didn't remember those right away, but then again, some things should be repressed, lol.

Temp Job That Pays Well
Aug 19, 2013

I was hired as a recruiter for a large cancer nonprofit that holds walk-a-thons. It is a 3-month temporary position and I was allowed to choose the hours, anywhere from 20 to 40 hrs a week. It involves reaching out to corporations and individuals and asking them for in-kind or monetary donations as well as participating in the walk-a-thon itself. Most of the contacts are repeat donors and are happy to get the call to join in the event again. Participation with the event is also required - se ...

Just showed up on the Job Seeker's board.  Does this mean that you're a temporary employee until they decide they like you, and then they give you a firm offer?  Not a good deal, IMO.   ...

I Had An Interview Today, Its In-house, Temp, To Catch Up. Sm
Jul 24, 2013

I am still reeling from this sit-down.  I interviewed with the hiring manager of a huge medical group in this fairly large city.  I got her opinion on the future of MT.  This group wants to get caught up on everything because they are converting to EHR.  So, there is a temp position available.  Its $18 an hour.  Just like the old days.   She told me that, as a manager, in her opinion, MT is gone.  She was a true skeptic and had a wait and see attitude abo ...
