TRANSCRIPTION WHILE RV'ING - TRAVEL LADY

Posted: Apr 13, 2014

Does anyone on here ever type for any companies and are in an R.V. traveling.  If so, do you just have to pull into places that have free internet or is there some sort of internet you can get to have always?  I am interested in doing this in the near future, so I need some advice please?

Thanks!

I used to, no longer. I am no longer an MT, but for about - me

5 years I traveled in my RV, sometimes months at a time, and worked the entire time. It is much easier now than it was when I was traveling, due to more WiFi availability. I used to get my work via FTP, which meant I could download my work and work offline, and then would just need to have internet long enough to send completed work. It was great, but challenging at times to find internet. Most campgrounds have internet now, though you may have to pay for it. Places like McDonalds, Panera Bread, and Starbucks have free WiFi, as do most hotels and you could potentially just pull into the parking lot to access it. If you need to be connected all the time to work, which is pretty much the norm now, then it might be a bit challenging. Most campgrounds would not allow unlimited internet usage. You could look into satellite, but it isn't reliable (BTDT) and a large number of companies do not allow it, nor do they allow wireless internet.

If you wanted to stay in one place for a length of time then you could probably get your own internet service. I did that when we stayed in one place more than a month, but that didn't happen too often.

The company I worked for is no longer in business and I don't personally know of any other company that uses FTP transfer, though I'm sure there are some.

Something you may want to look at is being a workamper. You can work in the campground, taking reservations, activities person, janitorial, landscaping, etc. You get your lot rent for free and there are usually other perks. Most do not pay, though some do. They allow enough time off during the week to see the sites.

www.workamper.com/ We did this several years ago on a very limited basis, but there were lots of jobs available all over the U.S. Some of the jobs also provided free WiFi, though whether it is unlimited or not I don't know. That might allow you to work less if you don't have to pay for lodging.

Happy trails.

some thoughts - sm

Never done this myself, but lots of places including campgrounds are now getting wifi. It might not be a very reliable connection though, so it may be difficult were you to depend on public wifi.

One thing to consider though, if you are going to be using a public wifi, you are opening yourself up to hackers being able to access info on your computer. You would most definitely need to get a VPN to help protect against this. There are free and inexpensive ones so it's not a big deal, but it is something a lot of people don't think about. Private info on a public wifi with no VPN = very bad idea.

Another thing, you can actually buy a device through various cell phone providers (call internet sticks, aircard, etc.) that will give you wifi access through it anywhere you get a cell phone signal with them. You pay by data though, which could add up ridiculously quickly if you didn't have a good data plan on it.

or you could just get air card. - East MT

My mother in law couldn't get internet where she lived so we added an air card to our cell phone plan for $20/month. pretty cheap if you already have cell phone service. We use AT and T.

data limits on air card - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If you have limits on data though air cards won't be an option, so it will depend on your plan. I tried it once when I was traveling and it was shocking how fast the data added up (I didn't have much data allowed on my plan and I went through what I did have in a few hours). Had I kept using it for an extended period of time the bill would have been astronomical.

You can download software that will track your data so you can get an idea of how much the transcription actually uses (it was way, way more than I though it would be).

If you don't have to worry about the data limit though it would be a good option.

Traveling in an RV - MTinRV

I am presently working on that very situation right now. We have AT&T and they are by far the best way to go - have tried many others. You have to purchase a device called a Mi-FI and it serves as your hotspot, so you can get online pretty much anywhere you can receive a cell phone signal.

WiFi Hotspot - Another RVMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Hi fellow RV'er. I began doing this last year also. It is easy for me because I have an iPhone (through AT&T) and the iPhone has a personal hotspot built right in. You just activate it when you want it. Now the drawback is that it uses a lot of data from my plan, but I have a plan high enough to be able to cover it. You can check your usage daily right from your phone, so you can tell how much you're using. This way, I can actually transcribe in my RV sitting right there in my dinette while hubby is driving. It's a little wobbly, but I do editing, not so much typing, so it's pretty easy.

The other concern here that I'll bring up is that, while others suggest using a campground's WiFi, unless it's secure, you shouldn't do it. The WiFi on the personal hotspot on the iPhone is WPA2 secure, so there's not an issue. Public WiFi, not necessarily -- but you can check to see if it's WPA2.

Happy Trails!

There is something called Clear Wireless Internet - nn

[ In Reply To ..]
My significant other used his phone as an air card for his internet through Sprint and he ended up with a horrific bill. (He was under the impression that "unlimited wireless internet" meant just that. We did some investigating and I found Clear wireless internet. It is approximately $55 a month and I believe now through the Sprint network. You have to purchase a small modem, but it is a secure internet connection.

Last year, I moved back to the Midwest for a short period of time and service was not available through Clear at that time, so I have allowed the S/O to use it (he is in the Miami area). They do have a website --- www.clear.com, so you could probably check it out as far as coverage. With my moving back and forth, I have stayed in motels that have had internet coverage and the last two luckily through Comcast. These have been on a secure network where you have to enter a password provided to you by the motel, so possibly the RV parks would have something similar.

hotel internet - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure having to enter a password at a hotel doesn't make the connection secure. It just means that every Joe Schmo around isn't connecting to it making it bogged down.

I also believe that others connected on that network with you could still potentially hack into your computer. If you are using a public wifi (even a password enabled hotel one) at all I would definitely use a VPN. They are easy to set up and are cheap. Some are even free. This way your data should be secure. The last thing you need is someone being able to access your computer and the accounts you are working on.

Need to be WPA2 - Agreed - Do NOT use public wifi

Public Wifi is not HIPAA compliant.
