Small MT business insurance - Starting out

Posted: Feb 24, 2014

For those of you who own your own small MT business, can you advise me if liability insurance is a requirement?  Do you recommend this or is it even cost-effective? Thanks for any help.  Please ONLY those who actually have their own business.  Not just opinions.  Thanks!

Not an opinion - Just a question or 2

I'm curious as to how these days you are going to get your own accounts. Clinics, for the most part, don't have services (or their own MTs) anymore, they just do their own thing at the computer.

Maybe you're going to try to get a hospital account and compete with the big MTSOs?

Well, good luck either way. I'll be anxious to see if anyone still runs their own small MTSO.

There are still a few of us small MT business owners. Clinics absolutely do utilize small MT companies, but I won't be giving out my secrets. Sorry. Was looking for information from an actual business owner as specified in my first post.

Oh... - I misunderstood a bit

I somehow got the impression that you were going to start your own business for the first time, so those were rhetorical questions to get people thinking about doing that at this stage of the MT game.

Well, I hope you get the info you need.

You're talking to business owners here (sm) - Rose

Those of us who are contractors are business owners, even without subcontractors. Many of us owned our own small businesses for decades before having to resort to working for a larger MTSO for peanuts. To start a small business you will likely not be able to compete with the MTSOs TAT, which is very tricky unless you hire many subcontractors for coverage. I don't think there is any secret to being able to do this so I doubt anyone here wants to get you to reveal your "secrets". You either have the tech savvy, or tech help to integrate with particular EMR being used by your clients and the ability have competitive TAT.

I do not know any independent contractors who can afford to buy insurance and if an error made by the contractor or one of her subs, well... you can't get blood from a turnip.
She is saying - She already owns the biz

Just wants to know about insurance. I made the mistake of thinking she was wanting to start a business, but it turns out, she already does, just wants to know about insurance.

I have no desire to go into the MT business, so nope, I wasn't asking for secrets. Just asking some cautionary questions before anyone goes into starting their own MT service.

Well, that was rude. - xx

It is unlikely that anyone will be interested in helping you now, and there are a lot of people who frequent this board who probably had the answers you were looking for. Oh, well.

Going Digital - I Run A Small Transcription Business
May 16, 2012

Hi, I need some advice.  I run a small transcription business (me, myself and I) and my doctors are still using casettes (I know, they are die-hards).  I am trying to switch over to digital and need some advice as to the best equipment to use.  I only have about five doctors so I don't want' to go into too much expense.  Can anyone give me any ideas for inexpensive call in systems and digital transcribers? Any help would be appreciated.   Thanks. Marj ...

The Small Business Owner Side Of Things
Mar 24, 2014

I received a very sad email from a woman who stated (and I believe her) that she was a former MT with more than 2 decades of experience.  She was upset  at the pay scale listed in an advertisement she saw seeking independent contractors.  I own a very small transcription company which like so many others in our industry struggles to stay afloat.  It's true that wages are not what they once were in the heyday of medical transcription, but neither are the rates that client ...

Liability Insurance For Business Associate/IC
Nov 02, 2013

I spent a lot of time looking for an insurance company that will not charge me an arm and a leg to be insured as a Business Associate (formerly IC). I paid $400 a year, which is not bad considering the other choices. I just want to share to those of you that need to be insured.   http://www.myvirtualstore.yolasite.com/professional-liability-insurance.php   ...

So after more than a month of research for the new HIPAA-HITECH Final Rule, I was able to pass everything to the company I work for as an IC. I just want to share to any IC/BA if anyone is still looking for professional liability insurance/Error and Omission. This company is the cheapest I have found. http://www.myvirtualstore.yolasite.com/professional-liability-insurance.php   ...

Small-bowel Versus Small Bowel
Jun 08, 2015

I've always just used "small bowel," but then noticed most put "small-bowel," I assume to differentiate it as being part of the intestine as opposed to a small, or little bowel.  Okay, that makes sense, so I stated hyphenating small-bowel.  However, I just got marked off by QA for putting in a hyphen!  No matter what you do or don't do, you're screwed!  I do believe they just look for ways to antagonize so you'll never feel appreciated.  ...

Just A Small Vent
Mar 12, 2010

I have one of "those" dictators.  I know. . . . . who doesn't, right? This guy is a native English speaker, but he's a speedy mumbler.  I struggle with him, but work on each one of his that I get so that I can get better.  Just when I think I'm getting better with him one of his comes back from QA completely marked up.  Some are changes that could be debated, but some are just stupid mistakes that I should have caught. I'm just frustrated ...

Small Pet Peeve
Aug 16, 2010

After struggling with names like Siobhan, Ahleksi (concocted to prove a point), and Yvan, I am so happy to have a "normal name" such as what sounds like "John Carter." Whew! Finally! A no-brainer! But I start to look it up-- no such thing in the data base. Well! It just happens to be "John Carter" spelled "Gionn Kharter." This is just a not-real-life illustration. But isn't it irritating when you finally get a regular-sounding name and it's not so regular, and the d ...

Small Vent But I Just Have To Do It

I hate it when doctors put punctuation in their dictation.  (In this instance it was "p.m. in capital letters")  We don't tell them how to do their jobs ... why should they tell us how to do ours?  Sorry, this a vent that rears its ugly head from time to time.  ...

A Small Ray Of Hope For MTs
Sep 02, 2011

Recently, one of our local hospitals opened up 4 full time jobs to QA the work they are getting from their vendor.  It seems the doctors were complaining about the quality of their reports.  My hope is that other hospitals as well will see that you get what you pay for and that the lower rates they are demanding followed by the lower rates paid to qualified MTs working for companies like MQ results in the loss of the most qualified MTs and inferior work being produced by less qualified ...

A Small Grumble
Oct 18, 2011

I know I am putting myself on the firing squad front and center, but I just would like to make a small comment. I am of the opinion that if a person posts a question about something specific or important to them often times there are a lot of views but no replies. The common thread here I notice is if the topic revolves around negativity it gets all kinds of response. Don't get me wrong, I am in the same boat everyone else is with my career changing at warp speed, and I have been doing this ...

Small Company Vs MTSO
Sep 08, 2011

I am beginning to think it's better to work for a small company than a big MTSO.  So many of the comments on here are really not in favor of the "big boys."  I'm sure it's partly old employees that dislike the company, but there seems to be less "drama" about the smaller companies.  I would LOVE to find a small company that uses the Emdat Inscribe platform.
