Looking for opinions, I've been offered at job at a small, - SM

Posted: Apr 24, 2012

one-doctor, one-nurse practitioner office that is 10 minutes from home in my small town where I will make $12 an hour or I could continue to work from home averaging basically the same rate of pay being paid on production.  I'm not sure which to choose.

I like working from home, but the in-office job is Monday through Friday, 9 to 5.  No working late to get my lines or working weekends, but it also means an investment in some new clothes because it has been a very long time since I required business casual clothing.

I have an 11yo daughter and while she's very responsible and would only be alone for an hour each day before I got home from work, I still would miss being able to pick her up from school.  I would also miss the flexibility of being able to take breaks and run errands if necessary.  Plus I have to learn to deal with people and office politics again which I haven't done in many years.

But then I like the idea of getting back out in the world and not feeling so isolated and having an actual in-office job will cut down on the people in my life treating my job like it's not serious because I work in my PJs at home.  My sister who lives 5 minutes from me constantly calls me from her work to ask me to run over to her house to check on this or check the mail or let the cat out or see if she left the stove or coffeepot on.   So I won't miss that.

So which one would you chose if it were you and why?

Why make a lateral move? - me

You have to be regimented to work at home - your sister is very inconsiderate to think that just because you are home, you are doing nothing constructive. Leave your answering machine on and check your messages at lunch time. Tell your family/friends not to call unless it's an emergency. You have to be more disciplined. I've been home 17 years now and could NEVER go back to any office. I love my flexibility, and the fact that I don't have to buy new clothes or drive with the gas prices. If people are treating your job like it's not serious, it is because you are letting them do so. Take a stand one way or the other. You may find being out in the real world, such as it is today, is not a very good thing. Just my 2 cents worth.

I would go for it. - cc

If you have a chance to work in an office I would go for it. That would be more experience you have under your belt if for some reason your current job diminishes. I have been trying to work an office and because I have twenty years working in my home I do not have office experience. Good Luck

I agree with poster who says keep dolng what you're doing - mt424

I have working at home 24 years, and I could never go back to an office job. JMO

What would you be doing in that office? - A lot of variables and is Mrs. Doctor the office m

[ In Reply To ..]
What would your job responsibilities be in this office? Does the doctor's wife run the business end of things? That's a major no for me.

Like the other poster said, if your sister is taking advantage of the fact that you are home during the day, it is because you are letting her. Screen your calls, don't answer the door, etc. Make that a very hard line for your friends and family. If they balk, simply tell them that you would not call them to leave their work to go check on something at your house, so they would return that respect. You have to take yourself seriously before they will get the message to take you seriously, even if you are working at home in PJs which is a MAJOR perk as far as I'm concerned.

It's a lateral move. For me, it would not be a good one. You've got new clothes expense, you've got gas expense, you've got office politics (which would be a major stumbling block), you've got your child being at home for an hour during the day, the decreased lack of flexibility. If you need more $$ and just flat out can't get your line count up, consider another MTSO with possibly a higher line rate (hey, it's possible...) or even a better, faster platform.

Yeah, you would get out more, but you can go volunteer at any charitable organization and get the same effect.

If you're only considering this because it is a way to get your family to take your job more seriously, then that's the wrong reason to do it.

Will you have to make a quota? - Will you have benefits?

[ In Reply To ..]
Will you have paid holidays and vacation? How many people in the office and yes, good point, is Mrs. Doctor in charge?

Actually, it is a female doctor, so no "Mrs." I will have - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
paid holidays and vacation after the first 90 days. As far as benefits, I would have them for myself, beyond that it would get really expensive to cover my daughter. However, I already have state health insurance on my daughter and pay a small premium each month for that which would not go up. So healthcare benefits are really a factor.

Finally, it's a small office, 5 people counting me or whomever is running the front desk. No quotas to meet. Just do the prior days notes. Finally, I am currently a student at DeVry taking online courses towards getting my RHIT and CCS, which the doctor liked because eventually I could handle the billing for the office at which time I would be given a raise, but the amount of which would be decided at that future time.

Sooooooo, on the surface this in-office job has some promise, but I don't want to start the job and then find I miss working from home.

Any possible way - you could

[ In Reply To ..]
work part-time at your present job while you test the waters at this office job? Going to school at the same time might make that tough, but you could get a feel for the office job and still keep your home job. Just a thought. Good luck with your decision!

This is a chance to Advance Your Future. Dont let - working from home get in the

[ In Reply To ..]
way of that. You said you were in school for your RHIT and CCS and the doctor is wanting to keep you on once finished and give you a raise...

This is an opportunity for advancement and I say go with it. Not just because of the way the MT field is now, but because life is ever changing and it may be meant for you to do this.

It's handed to you on a silver platter and I would not bypass the opportunity. Yes, the pay is not that great, starting at $12 an hour, but you will be working your way up and there are no guarantees in this industry.

As quick as an account comes, as quick as it can go. One day you can be swamped with work and the next day taking PTO.

I would'nt bypass a great opportunity and a guaranteed pay check just to work from home.

Recommendation - CCS, CPC

[ In Reply To ..]
You should take the office job. No matter what it pays, no matter the clothes, no matter the drive, take it.

Why? Because it gives you the EXPERIENCE you will need to get a coding job or even a job in HIM.

Employers are not lining up to take every HIT grad, even if they pass the RHIT, which has a notoriously low pass rate. Without experience you will be just another resume in a stack.

This is also an opportunity to begin coding on the job. You do NOT need to wait until you are certified to do that. You can begin learning it bit by bit.

You should also get more familiar with the certification exams so that you understand what you will need later. For physician coding, you should get the CPC. The CCS is not going to be as helpful there since it is focused on hospital coding. You do not need to wait until graduation to take that. You should get the CPC as soon as you can because the CCS is goung to be a lot more trouble for you. I do not know what DeVry's sales staff told you, but their website will tell you that they prepare students for the CCA. They are AHIMA-accredited, so that is the most they can claim. They are serious when they say you need 3 years of experience working ininpatient coding to pass the CCS.

Given that, your best bet for a job is in that office right now. It gives you the same job you would be getting later, it gives you experience, it gives you a chance to learn OJT, and it gives you a stable income to start paying off your loans. Don't sneer at the CPC, either. You may find you need the doors it will open.

Small Town - INMT

[ In Reply To ..]
One thing you need to ask the office about is what is expected of you if you complete the day's dictation and have time left in your day. What duties are asked of you, filing, phone calls, insurance billing, etc. I would imagine that a smaller town is not going to run 100 or patients in and out in one day and might only see 40 to 50 maybe. If they dictate on all of them each day I would think that you could get that amount done in about 4 hours or so, if not faster, so then what do you do, go home, work there. If you are expected to do more than transcription work then I would expect you should be paid more for your skills, time, and knowledge.

As far as "The Wife" I go so far as to ask if ANY family works there. Been there done that, several times and it always bites you back.

Doing billing after you complete school is one way, but there are private companies that specialise in training courses, usually a week long that teach and educate and at the end of the course you take the certification test and can become a certified medical biller. Ask your doctor is she is willing to get you that course and pay for it and you work for her, if so, get in writing what her pay would be.

I went to work with the promise of this offer after two months' time in the office doing insurance payment chasing. At the end of the two months I approached the office manager, who was the doctor's cousin (Hello) and his response was, OH we cant afford that. I promptly said, If you dont plan to follow through with your offer I am out of here, which I did, that day. Beware and be smart. Regardless of how "small" and hometown the office is get it in writing. Ok JMHO. hope it helps

Don't make a lateral move. When you work in an office you have to deal with office staff, etc. Better to have those last precious yrs with your daughter and a flexible schedule. Not flexible when you go to an office. Why put the wear and tear on car, clothes cost, time cost......

Small-bowel Versus Small Bowel
Jun 08, 2015

I've always just used "small bowel," but then noticed most put "small-bowel," I assume to differentiate it as being part of the intestine as opposed to a small, or little bowel.  Okay, that makes sense, so I stated hyphenating small-bowel.  However, I just got marked off by QA for putting in a hyphen!  No matter what you do or don't do, you're screwed!  I do believe they just look for ways to antagonize so you'll never feel appreciated.  ...

Jan 20, 2010

Why dont they just start asking us to work for free!  At that rate I dont even think you make minimum wage!  This is obviously not even because of outsourcing.  I think what has happened is that a lot of work has gone overseas, but the remaining work that the transcription companies are getting is still paying a half-ways decent rate but they have taken a small cut to keep them.  Then they turn around and pay NOTHING to get it transcribed so the people running the companies a ...

Would Any Of You Take A Buyout From MQ If Offered?
Jun 20, 2010

In past months I have read on this board, with dismay, so many posts about long-time MQ MTs/MEs failing consecutive audits, and eventually being discharged. I think it is a major coincidence that so many employees are suddenly and consistently failing to meet the same quality standards they always met. I think it’s a flimsy contrivance to get rid of the more highly paid employees and replace them with cheaper newbies while avoiding an age discrimination actions because those higher-paid pe ...

We were out of TAT once last week and since then if there are more than 2 (well maybe I am exaggerating here) jobs in the pools they open up OT.  Everyone needs to make money, so of course many of us come in and work.  Understandable.  But TSMs need to cut it off at some point so we don't wind up with nothing in the morning and slow, slow, slow to build up during the day once it is cleaned out at night.  They want you to come back in early afternoon and make up ...

Employee Offered Insurance... Not Really Better Than My Own??
Jun 03, 2010

I am new to the MTSO thing.  IC for 10 years and bought my own health insurance.  It was $242.00 a month, and I let it go a few months ago after losing my job.  Now I am being offered by my employer an HSA plan for around the same amount or a PPO plan for around $300.00.  (this is them paying 60% and me paying 40% and that is what it equals??) This seems OUTRAGEOUS.  Am I crazy?  I am single, no children, spouse... under 30.... What is some opinions on going with ...
