Shortcut for Windows 8 - kathleen

I was using an old version of Shortcut for Windows and it was working nicely on my old puter. I got a new puter for Christmas (Thanks to my hubby - I think he wants me to type faster/more!) and I can't find my disk to load the Shortcut software onto the new puter - I'm not even sure it would work on Windows 8. Can anyone recommend a word expander similar to Shortcut? I'm not finding Shortcut for Windows available online. Anyone? Thanks - Kathleen

You should be able to find it on line on Sylvan Software website. I purchased it about 6-8 years ago and received a registration number so everytime I change computers it is still there when I put in my registration number on their website. I don't think you get a disk anymore, it is available for immediate download.

Thanks so much! I will check out the website right now! We did try to load my SC file onto a flash drive - didn't work. So, I have to rebuild my file once I purchase the software. Oy! That's a lot of shortcuts! No worries.

Hi Kathleen,

I use ShortCut also and what I did when I got my Windows 7 computer (about 2 years ago) was save EVERYTHING connected to SC to a USB flash drive and transferred it to the Windows 7 computer. I am not sure about it working with Windows 8, but the one thing that the tech at Superior Global told me (Superior Global designed SC and later sold it to Sylvan) was to make sure it was configured for Windows XP when you load the program onto the new computer.

Also, if at ALL possible, I would suggest seeing if you could "roll your computer back" to Windows 7. I have a dear friend in England, who is somewhat of a "geek" when it comes to computers and he has done 21 computers where people DETESTED Windows 8 and wanted their computers rolled back to Windows 7 -- it can be done and since you got it for Christmas, Microsoft may be able to do it for you for free, since it is still under warranty -- it will not do any harm to your computer and that way, you will be able to get more things done. Not too many companies have platforms that support Windows 8 (although mine does) and every tech person that I have talked to has basically said that Windows 8 is a "junk" operating system. If you do decide to do a "rollback," make sure that it is Windows 7 Professional and not another version of Win 7 (although I believe there is one higher version than Professional). The reason being is that when I bought my computer it had Windows 7 Home Premium on it and I found out that I could not do certain updates -- reason being is that the Home Premium version is a "stripped down" version and it also may be that way with your Win 8.

Hope this information works and you can get your ShortCut to work -- I have had mine for years and I think it is the best expander out there.

Thanks! I had heard this advice before. I have to say, I'm not very happy with Windows 8 so far - not when I'm used to XP. Let's all go back to Wordperfect 5.1! ;-) Life was easier back then!

than 8, but 7 is still better. I also use Short Cut and lost my disk. It is less than $100 to download it now. I don't remember what it was originally.

I did hear back from Sylvan. They corrected me - they do NOT own Shortcut. And, the bad news, even if I downloaded the software/file from their site - it is not compatible with Windows 8. They are not interested in writing software for Windows 8. Yuck! Now, what do I do? Any other speed-typing software out there that WILL be compatible with 8? I am not turning back to 7 - not spending $$ to do that.

Hi Kathleen, I responded to your original post regarding SC for Windows -- as I mentioned, SC for Windows was designed and developed by Superior Global, who later got involved with Sylvan. If you still have your old computer, copy the files associated with Shortcut to a flash drive. Then load those onto the new computer. Make sure when you configure the .exe file that is configured for Windows XP. If you have questions, just reply via email and I will try to answer any questions you may have -- it works with 7 and it should work with 8. However, I think you are going to find that a lot of programs that we use as MTs are not going to be compatible.

I had the same problem, used Shortcut for years but now have to use Windows 8. I am using a program called Short Hand. You can download a free trial for a month. I was able to import all my Shortcut files into Shorthand and it works virtually the same. I like it.

I call the telephone number on my program disc and they said that the company that developed Shortcut for Windows had been bought out by Superior Global but that they were allowed to provide tech support for Shortcut. I've used Shortcut for Windows for years always on a Word-based platform. Now I am using it in SpeechMotion which is not Word based. I need to know if there is anyway in Shortcut to set up a code to jump where I need to enter text. I have normal templates in Shortcut and have used an * to indicate a jump-to field. Has anyone ever wanted to work for a company that only used Windows XP and you had Windows 7 but could virtually move to XP mode? Hi all, Any MTs who work on Editscript. Do you use the shortcuts recommeded by the program or do you do your own workaround and remap keys or use Shorthand to map a different key to do the same or a combination of key commands. I tried using shorthand to overide the other key commands in Editscript and it will not let me. I've used the ShortCut expansion program for 13 years so I'd hate to have to change now, but I'm having a problem with my expansions popping out ever since I installed Word 2010. They actually come out in slow motion, so slowly that I have a paragraph typed and only two or so words will be expanded.
