Scared to work 2 jobs - CT
Posted: Jul 23, 2010
I need to work 2 transcription jobs, but I'm kind of scared that I will burn out or get carpal tunnel from all the typing I would be doing. Any insight you can share?

I have done it for over 4 years off and on. It pays to have at least one IC position, so you are not "locked in" on when you have to work. That way, if I'm tired, I just don't sign in. Otherwise, I work the part-time one just 3-4 hours per day 7 days a week. When I'm tired, I work the same days as my full-time job to get rest on my only 2 days off. It can be done.
I have worked 2 or more jobs for years. No problem. - Hardest problem is keeping the accounts straight,
I work two FT jobs and have a PT IC job and have never (sm) - JustanMT

had any problems until recently with what I believe is arthritis in the base of my thumbs, especially my right (space bar) thumb. Of course my back gets that fatigued feeling in it but it was doing that when I was working one job, lol. I generally work between 10-14 hours a day, depending on my work load, four to five days a week but I make sure that I get in some relaxation time during the week also and that really helps. That may be a night out for dinner, to visit my kids or to float in my pool, anything. Honestly that helps more mentally than physically. Make sure you take breaks and get plenty of sleep and you should be okay. Good luck!
I've got 2 jobs also! - I need them both!

I picked up a 2nd job so fairly new to juggling. I was afraid I was going to get burned out fast.
I have both of my jobs Tues-Sat; one in the daytime and one in the evening. I work as much as I can Tues-Sat so I can have 2 days off in a row, instead of having to makeup time/lines on one of my days' off. It seems to be working so far but you do get tired from typing and sitting all the time.
Good luck to you!

I am going to be possibly working two jobs as well and I am a bit apprehensive about it, but I feel I need to at least give it a try and see what happens, because I don't feel I can rely on just one anymore. I went to work for one place, stating it was a "new account" and then she lost in a month. I felt like I was hit with lightening, but she offered me another clinic. In the meantime I applied with a company that I talked to a year ago about starting up a new account, a rural hospital. Who knows where that will go. I am hoping more for the former position than the latter, but I am going to have to try and do both for awhile and I really don't want that much. I am on early retirement and can only make so much a month, so I am afraid I will make too much with both jobs. I have bascially been out of work for almost two months w/o pay because of another horrible company I went with after quitting a horrible company, so the extra money will come in handy. I just don't trust anyone and that is very sad indeed. Good luck to all of us out there trying to make this work!
Thanks for your replies! sm - CT

I'm thinking I might take a part time speech editing job to cut down on the typing.

I have a FTE but I also have an IC position which is typing only ER reports (and an endless supply of them). I keep the IC position not only for the extra mad money, but I LOVE emergency room reports and they're almost like being on a break for me.
(Yeah, I'm crazy but I have a lot of fun!).
That's a great idea about having one job being VR. My FT job is editing, while the ER reports are straight typing, so I get the best of both worlds and keep my skills up.
Good luck :-)

A few years ago I worked for seven different companies, one full-time and 6 IC, and I never had a problem, however, I highly recommend a split keyboard. They are really awkward at first, but after you have gotten used to it, you will never go back. Your hands are definitely in a more normal position as the keys are adequately spaced and not crunched together like on a regular keyboard, and most of them have a wrist rest. Make sure you have a very comfortable chair and even a stool or something under your desk to be able to put one foot up once in a while and change feet on your pedal when you can. It is almost hard to burn out when you have more than one job because the material is usually different, the doctors are different, etc. I think having more than one job helps break up the monotony.
I did it for years and was fine, no more.Pain every day, parttime now. nm - Nina B.
I may have to start doing this but single mom with - Three kids

I just don't know when I'd find the time. They all three play sports and have practice almost every day and games on Saturdays. I really need my weekends to rest my hands, but I may have to break down and work weekends.
Also, how do you deal with eye strain, not just hand strain? My eyes and hands are just wore out at the end of the day, 8 hours.

If you have concerns, listen to them. Please!
I did 2500 lines a day for about a decade to dig myself out of financial disaster. I have carpal tunnel in both hands and knee and spine problems. I finally had to quit working a year ago and now I can't pay my bills, don't qualify for disability, and can't afford surgery since I don't have insurance. Soooo, despite the CTS, I'm back here trying to suck up the pain, looking for PT work.
Please don't end up in this situation. Look for another creative means to earn money without harming your body or your soul. If I had it to do over, I'd have filed bankruptcy and trained in another line of work.
with this company? I have read soooooo much here that scares me. Can a person pay rent, car note, insurance, utilities and still eat working for this company. I just got passed to this company after 30 years of MT and a salary of 60,000. I am quite aware after reading here that I will not make what I am used to, but can I SUPPORT MYSELF? ...
I work for a hospital that pays hourly and incentive. Nuance has been our overflow service - as of late, they are getting more work than us hospital employees. Work is being given to them in droves. Should I start getting concerned that my hospital is getting ready to ax us or ship us out to NuiSance? Good grief.
Thanks for any input or stories you have. ...
as an MT with only my income. I live at a place where I don't have to pay any household bills right now. But I want to move out. It's not a good place for me to be living.
I plan to get an apartment in about 5 months. I am just scared I won't be able to support myself. i can get an apartment for about $400 to 700 dollars. Along with groceries, cable/internet, and utilities, I'm just unsure.
I guess I'm looking for advice/reasurance from MTs who support themselves ...
I want the newbies who come here and read the complaints and get scared about "what have I gotten myself into" to realize that not everyone is unhappy at MedQuist. Keep in mind that they have literally thousands of employees and only a handful come here to vent their unhappiness (which is fine, I understand, not everyone is going to be in an ideal situation). I think it very much depends on your circumstances as to how life will be at MQ.

a nonMT job!! It is at WM. As much as I hated WM, if they give me a job and I can earn a straight, steady, hourly wage, I will be SO grateful. After being dumped on and treated like an idiot for 18+ years, I am almost out. I sure hope so. I need this so bad. ...
Has anyone else read this? Is it true that Nuance may get to buy Spheris? All their transcription is done in India .... so after dedicating 15 years of my career, it will all come to an end if Nuance takes over.

I just went through training with a new company. They seem like very nice people. But I feel so overwhelmed with everything that we went through in training, in a way I've never felt before. I feel unprepared to do my job on my start date. (Thankfully, it's not today). I feel like I can log in, and that's it. My trainer just blazed through everything as if I knew what she was talking about, as if I had done it all before. Like I said, she was super, super nice. But I feel lik ...
I have been an MT for 10+ years. I have worked at home my whole entire career. Tomorrow I have an interview for an MT/Secretary position with an orthopedic office (I LOVE orthopedics). The doctor called me tonight to set up the interview. I am also taking a coding course currently and am really hoping to get my foot in the door with an office, preferably orthopedics. This opportunity is exactly what I have been waiting for!!!
Any interview advice? Im so ...
So the second week of April I got my graduation certificate in the mail from At-Home Profession's Medical Transcription Program. I am excited, I am ready for some MT work. I have been applying to places online and have sent out introduction letters to 20 different clinics and doctors offices with my information and business cards. Most places that are looking for MT's on this website require at least 1 year of experience and I can understand that. I am a newbie and no one likes to carr ...
It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment. If an employer can PROMISE IN ...
Kind of wondering if this last job posting on the jobs board might be associated with one of those "you pay us to find you a job" type of organization. I googled Medical Jobs Online and found nothing stating that are a legitimate MTSO :( ...
I tried entering my ID plus dep on the Fluency for Transcription page and it said my account was inactive. Okay, so I tried twice with Remedy to get it reactivated. Both times I got emails telling me it was working. Tried again and no luck. Am I on the right page, the one with the hideous orange splash, the same one we use to find our stats? Any help appreciated, I really don't want to have to call tech support if I don't have to. Do I even need to d ...
These eScription, Nuance, EMR, etc. posts are all very sobering. Does anybody think that we'll all be out of jobs in 5 years, 3 years??? and will we be cut loose quickly or slowly phased out? given enough notice?? etc.?? I think I'm getting to the point where working in a grocery store is starting to look more and more appealing. The thing that contradicts all this is that most of the companies constantly beg for extra work, higher production, consis ...
On almost every thread somebody mentions their finances are in dire straights. And on almost every thread somebody whose life is just peachy demands to know why they "let" their finances get shaky and why they didn't just "get another job before things got so bad". We are not sitting around just wringing our hands, as is so often implied. Many of us have been applying, constantly, for months; with more entering the job search every day, the competition gets harder and hard ...
I have been looking for work for almost 3 months and not even a bite. I am so frustrated. I have also been looking for work outside the MT field, have had a few interviews, but still unable to secure employment. Does anyone know if anyone is hiring for PT? ...
I recently changed my health care to Kaiser and have observed first hand and for the first time, the use of electronic medical records; they really are of immeasurable assistance to each provider who is treating the patient. Nevertheless, there are still certain physicians who must dictate, i.e., surgeons, consultants, certain medical specialists. There will undoubtedly be fewer jobs for MTs but there will still be jobs for those who can transcribe those reports. It will a ...

ow, it’s been said -- and Hillary alluded to this -- that there are two kinds of people in the world —- those who do the work and those who take the credit. There’s a corollary to the saying: Try to be in the first group because there’s much less competition. (Laughter.) It&rsqu ...
I just ran into a local job already, MOWING GRASS. The lady's lawn mowing man just finished school and is quitting the mowing. She paid him $1400 last month to mow, run the weedeater, keep weeds out of the flowers, etc. ($25 an hour).
My husband does handyman work and is always being asked to mow or if he knows anyone. He hates it. I like it. I think I just might take this on. (Probably for less money, though. She thought that was too much, b ...

So, I am about to finish a medical transcription certificate program through a community college. I have started going through these boards and I am starting to get nervous about job possibilities. Most postings are about how horrible the industry is and how impossible it is to get a job. I've been working on this for 2 years now and I'm starting to get nervous that it's been for, potentially, nothing. Any advice? ...
For everyone who has had NJA lately (myself included) go to www.medquist.com and read this story on their front page "
"Duke Primary Care eliminates transcription costs with SpeechQ."
SpeechQ is the MQ program that eliminates the MT/editor altogether and MDs edit the reports themselves. Duke Family Clinic alone is now doing 8,000 jobs PER WEEK this way, thereby eliminating our job from the whole picture. What doesn't go to India goes to SpeechQ. The writing is on th ...
I haven't been getting a second resevered job for quite some time and was wondering if I was the only one. I have told my manager and she said she would fix it about 2 months ago. It really stinks because after I complete a job it throws NJA at me. If I let if search for jobs long enough it will find me one. My manager said there is plenty of work and I shouldn't get that and I SHOULD get 2 jobs at once... but not yet I suppose. ...
