Coding Books recommendation - head start

Posted: Jun 09, 2010

Does anyone recommend any beginning coding books to explore the field of coding and possibly get a head start while I am awaiting school?   Thanks so much.

I don't really know of any good coding books for before you start school. Are you already an MT? If not, you might consider picking up a medical terminology book. Another idea would be one of the human anatomy coloring books. That could be a fun way to start learning some basic anatomy while you wait.

yes im an MT. anatomy coloring book? Excellent Idea. - was also wondering

I was also wondering about the Carol Buck books?

I tried to get interested in those coloring books and was - bored stiff

As a pragmatist, I always prefer solid information and knowing how to apply it. One time I thought I would learn a little and have some fun, so I bought one of those coloring books. I was bored. I kept at it thinking being bored was fine as long as I was learning something that I could use, but I wasn't. We're all different and I'm sure the coloring book probably works for some people. Just sharing my own experience. I have to add that I'm not really a fun & games kind of a learner. Those crossword puzzles bore me too. LOL I have a one-track mind when it comes to learning. Can't hurt to try it and see what you think though. Come back and give us your opinion for comparison purposes for others.

I'm just the opposite, I really like crossword puzzles and word search games Maybe the coloring takes me back to a more carefree time, lol! I'm always looking for ways to reinforce the things I study so that I don't forget them, I've also found flash cards to be helpful. I probably shouldn't make recommendations to other people because we obviously don't all like the same things. All a person can do is try and see what works for them.
That is true - was bored stiff

It's probably good that we are all different. Most of my friends would love the crossword puzzles.

Suggestion regarding coding books - Anonymous

As a coding student, I would suggest foregoing obtaining coding books until after you have started school, it won't be introduced until later in your program and you may get confused. I'm an MT and agree that anatomy books would be helpful. I have a coloring book and it does help me to remember what I have learned.

Are you waiting on college and is one of the requirements a course in human anatomy?

If so, this is what I would recommend. Find out what A&P book they will be using and get a copy. Plan a study schedule that will enable you to complete the entire book before classes start. Read it, study it, answer the questions. Answer -- in writing -- all the learning objective questions at the beginning of each chapter. Be very complete in your answers. Compose test questions based on all the facts in the book.

I recommend that because A&P is a weed-em-out course at most colleges. The courses are usually difficult at best. If you do what I suggest above, by the time you take A&P, it will be just a review for you. You'll have a much easier time of it.

If you think you would enjoy the coloring book, it would be fine. But, it would be more valuable if you combined it with the above, so that your learning would fit in with what you needed to know.

Coding books aren't going to help much, certainly not nearly as much as the above.

Billing/Coding School Recommendation Sm

Thinking of taking billing/coding courses since transcription is going downhill.  Any good on-line schools that are AHIMA accredited?  Do you have to take courses only accredited by AHIMA?  What about their courses?  Any suggestions and/or help would be appreciated.  (Also, I don't want to take a course that takes years to complete.)  Thanks in advance! ...

Fabulous Way To Save Money On Coding Books!
Aug 16, 2012

Now that I have your attention . . .it is THAT TIME of year again.  Before you order your 2013 code books, remember that there is only one ICD-9 diagnosis code change for 2013.  You do not need to buy a new book this year.  Just get the change from the CDC website and add it by hand.  Same with the procedures. There will be a gazillion CPT changes, sad to say, so get a head start on those.  The CPT books should be available soon, if not already.  The AMA publishes ...

I see they have an ad.  I worked there but left for family tragedy.  I am giving them an unsolicited endorsement.  Wonderful, friendly women.  they do have teaching accounts so not for newbies.  If you want to work for a good company and deal with sane individuals, I recommend them.  I did not make tons of money there (but where can you anymore) but it was certainly refreshing to deal with adults.   ...

Recommendation/Suggestion
Apr 16, 2013

Everyone should make a habit of getting a letter of reference from CURRENT employers even before you are actually looking for another job.  All you have to say is that you are updating your resume and want to be sure you have current letters of reference attached as well.  It doesn't matter if you are working as an "employee", if they are happy with you and with your work, they should have no problem giving this to you.  If you are an "IC", it should be even easier since you ...

Recommendation For Those Ever-recurring Little Corrections.
Oct 25, 2009

You know, where you have to stop and type in a "his," "the," "no," "were," "and," or separate a run-on into 2 sentences, add a "She" to a sentence, change a letter, join 2 sentences into one, etc., because VR goofed. This has been working well for me:  Use SINGLE LETTERS (T, E, F, and so on) for the very most common words and corrections. Like T for "the," N for "no," E for "was", J for "has," F for macro that toggles letter from lower to upper and upper to lower ...

Need Keyboard Recommendation For Issues With De Quervain's
Mar 26, 2010

I have been a MT for close to 15 years & have used a Kinesis keyboard for the majority of that time. I am currently using the Advantage. Line Count Program Recommendation
Nov 09, 2011

Can anybody recommend a reliable line count program that will count in the Word 2010 program?  I used to use Abacus which you could access directly in Word if you inserted a shortcut to it.  This way I could finish a document, count it, then close it with a password.  Abacus apparently doesn't work in Word 2010 and I've been experimenting wtih other counting programs but haven't found one that is as easy to use ... everything so far seems to require many more steps.  I use a g ...

Reference Books

Reference Books - Out Of Curiosity
Jul 19, 2011

Hello, MTs! I am back for another question! I do have a list of books I'm interested in purchasing from either Dorland's or Stedman's medical dictionary to Merck Manual's of Patient Symptoms (the list goes on, but I'm just naming a couple). Google is so wonderful when it comes to researching when you don't have anything, but I feel it's not completely reliable as having hardcopy materials. Out of curiosity, what book(s) can you not live without or work without ...
