Question about Histology Transcription - anon

Anyone who types histology transcription, do you have doctors who for diagnosis give for example "benign prostatic hypertrophy" and then you are to "assume" that you need to go up to the specimen area on the requistion and fill in all the specimen information and then put the "BPH" with a dash after the initial diagnosis that is not actuallly dictated. I am uncomfortable doing this and wondering if this is standard procedure for this type of dictation. I did get in trouble for not "knowing" I was to do this. Just curious if this is standard procedure as usually I type acute care and not histology. Thanks.

[ In Reply To ..]I'm not sure what you mean by the specimen area on the requisition form. I've never encountered a requisition form working at home. As far as getting into trouble, how would you know to do this, if you weren't told by your supervisor/account specs, QA, etc. Apparently, it's that department's way of doing things. Now you know, I guess, so you won't make that mistake again.

Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession. I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India. It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand. Don't work for this company. They are extremely picky. One person tells you to do it one way, another tells you differently. A seasoned MT well versed in voice recognition software, particularly Editscript, produced by eEscription out of Massachusetts, can make 500-600 lines per hour. At 3 cents a line that is slave wages.
