One of my coworkers this morning said... - Seriously?!?!

"I feel kinda a bad for the girl at the outside service, we haven't sent her much work this week."

This was from the lead who makes the decision on how much work to send out and how much we can handle in house.  Now try and convince me I have job security...

Unfortunately, I think this happens a lot. I work for a large company that does hospital work and during the summer months there is always work on the system and during the months of January through April there would be little to no work. I think they only send work to the company they outsource to is when their MTs cannot keep up with the workload.

so I would prefer that we not send any work to the outside service and I certainly do not feel bad when we can't send work to the service because we are keeping up with the workload!

I explained to my coworker that the "girl at the service" probably is sitting at her desk in India with PLENTY of other work to keep her busy, so shouldn't feel too bad for her.

they expect to not get work on occasion, and I'm sure MTSO has other accounts that are probably full service, where the facility has NO in-house trascription department, to keep them busy.

You are probably in competition with the service, if they do it faster, better, and are relied on a lot - why pay both In-house MTs and the MTSO? The more you don't send them is a good thing...eventually someone higher up than that coworker with the comment will decide they are wasting their money on a service, specially if they are paying a retainer. Contracts are set tho, and you won't see anything change until renewal comes up.

In other words, co-worker should start worrying about herself and what she does over the state of the MTSOs workflow. We survived an outside service where I used to work...if we got behind - we made sure we worked harder and longer hours to clean it up, and then harder after that to make sure it never happened again. Hospital paid some overtime to us for this, and STILL saved money - so eventually dropped the service.

You have to do it though...no, "but my husband wants me home" BS when the TAT slips. How many co-workers will pitch in? You are only as good as your team sometimes.

There are so many variables and without hearing the entire conversation or knowing the particulars, it is difficult to know what your co-worker meant. It sounds as if you are making assumptions about job security. It's great that you didn't need to send work out this week, but maybe your facility had a lower census than normal, maybe patient visits were down, some of the providers could have been on vacation or maybe they just didn't dictate. I worked in a large MT department and we sent overflow work out to 2 different services. For us, at the end they outsourced it all and laid everyone off because the services got it done cheaper. The line rates being charged were about the same, but we were costing them too much in benefits, in addition to overhead (equipment costs, etc.) Hopefully your department will be able to undercut the service and your facility will no longer need them, but it's a slippery slope and VR and the use of EMR are also variables you should probably consider. I'm not sure there is any job security in medical transcription anymore. Don't count your chickens before they hatch and don't base your job security on one isolated incident.

I'm getting so tired of having a report or two, then NJA, then while waiting another report comes, then NJA, etc., etc., early in my shift.  Sure, we have been encouraged to just check back later on and work then.  I really don't know why they suggest or even allow this to happen.  When you log on during another shift, all you're doing is taking work from those folks who normall work then.  They in turn are then told to work later too and this cycle of NJA just ...

I am sick to death of typing on accounts not in my BOB!  This is the 4th one already and I am only an hour into my shift. There are no samples in the repositry, there are no jobs that come up under the dictator look up feature... I keep stuffing down the Tums, wondering why in the heck I was forced to do weekend hours when there is no work in my accounts on the weekend.
