New to at-home transcription - iatypingmom

Posted: Jan 16, 2014

I am considering doing medical transcription from home. I have never had this sort of job before and need some advice. Does anyone know of a good "starter" company that would offer part-time work?  Is finding a good company just a matter of research and word-of-mouth? I do have 20+ yrs experience. Any advice appreciated!! Thanks!

20 years of what kind of transcription? - see msg pls

If you have 20 years of acute care, any company will be happy to test you. If you only have family practice clinic, not so much. They might be willing to test you if you have multi-speciality clinic, but clinic transcription is not in a good place--it's too easily replaced by speech recognition. Acute care is sort of alive and well, but don't expect to get paid much working for an MTSO.

Working from home for an MTSO stinks these days, so you may want to check the archives here before you make that decision.

Not really even sure what you mean by a starter company. If you have 20 years of intense acute care, you don't need a starter anything, you're there.

6 yrs acute care; 10 yrs family medicine; 5 yrs pediatrics.I guess what I mean by "starter" is that I've never had an at-home position before and need to know what to look for in terms of reputable, fair companies. Don't want to get burned right off the bat!

"Reputable? Fair?" This is the MT world. Good luck with that.

Oh, that's a different question - You can forget fair and reputable

If your acute care experience is fairly recent, the companies will definitely test you. If you're several years out, you won't be up to par.

But your question is that you're looking for a fair company, not a starter company. Sorry, not happening. If it does, be warned that it won't be for long. They are all allowing themselves to be bought up by the bad guys, and if they are choosing to stay on, they are not hesitating too much to be offshoring their work to India, or allowing speech recognition crud.

because they pay is about tops at 8 cents a line and we're stuck here. I have been putting in applications everywhere trying to get back into a regular paying job. Word of advice, don't go with Nuance or M-Modal, the QA with both of them is 99+ and they are both horrible to work for. I work at Nuance now and I am so miserable and it looks from reading the MM board they are, too. I worked at Softscript for awhile and really liked them, the pay was better than most but we ran out of work a lot so I ended up having to quit. Just search the archives or if there is somebody you are leaning towards post something on the company board and see what the people who work for them say.

My advice is to find something else. There are literally thousands of experienced MTs who are looking for jobs. I am sorry, but the transcription train has left the station.

There is a new company with lot of potential to expand. It is called Express medical transcription. I got a job with them as an QA. The web is www.xmedtrans.com.

It's just not a good time to do that. - sm

To find a "reputable" company is rare. What we put up with is very often late pay, no pay, no work, etc. Most companies use VR now and really don't believe what they tell you on how fast you can supposedly do it. My expereince with many VR platforms is that I basically get paid maybe 3 cpl to spend more time on a report than I would have typing it from scratch! Also, if you do happen to stumble across a good company, they generally are short lived and you will be pounding the pavement looking for a new one shortly. I couldn't even tell you how many jobs I have had this past year (I'm wondering myself because I need W2 forms) and it isn't because I am unstable, it is because the MT WORLD is unstable. I take a job, halfway believing all of the promises only to find out I'm making about 3 bucks an hour, or I'm sitting at my computer waiting for work, with no pay, which is what most MTSOs make you do.

My personal opinion is that ANYTHING you find to do would be better than an at-home MT, but if you do choose to give it a try, good luck to you, you will need it.

I've been pretty fortunate - had an at-home transcription job, paid hourly, full-time, great benefits. I moved and my former employer said I couldn't work from home for them in the new state. I was fortunate enough to have found an in-house MT position (though I hate (office culture), and I'm getting paid quite a bit more per hour than I was before and at part-time, I have benefits. We are moving towards working from home in a year or so, and the eventual switch to VR has also been mentioned. But right now, I'm ok with the status quo.

I don't intend to stay in MT forever, and since this company will pay for schooling, I intend to return to school to get into RHIA or coding.

All that to "say" this: I suggest trying to find an in-house MT position or a job in another field altogether. The at-home positions which provide real benefits and pay an excellent hourly wage have become few and far between and if they are advertised, they are snatched up fairly quickly. If you see a job listing for an MT position that does not expressly state IN-HOUSE ONLY, ask the company if you can about initially working in-house first, them moving to working from home. Good luck.

I'm just curious as to why you asked about a "starter" company when what you meant was a fair and reputable company? I mean, if someone has a lot of at-home experience, they wouldn't need a fair and reputable company?

Home Transcription Ad...ha
Jul 08, 2012

Love my job as an at-home MT and love working from home, but that set aside, I think we can all agree that if you're looking to make good money, this is likely not the profession to pursue anymore.  So I saw this ad in one of my magazines, August issue:Train at home to Work at Home . . . Be a Medical Transcriptionist . . . Earn up to $40,000 a year. . . Also, there's a picture of a lady at her computer smiling really big with her 4 or 5-year-old daughter in her lap.  Hahahaha ...

MT Transcription Area In Your Home, Where Is It?
Jan 25, 2010

Where are you set up?  I am moving my desk and office stuff around, I find if I do that I actually work better (I know that sound strange, but I find that it's true!)  My mother used to move her furniture around every once in a while... LOL Not that it made a huge amount of difference honestly, but it made her happy and it did liven things up a bit. So, my question is, where is your MT station set up in your home?  I thought about moving out by the kitchen and out of my offi ...

If I Was Let Go Of A Home Medical Transcription Job...?
Mar 06, 2010

In previous posts I mentioned that I was let go of a home medical transcription job because I didn't produce the "perfect" amount of work that was needed right away... Anyways, as I mentioned previously, I got this home medical transcription job only a month after I graduated from Rasmussen College and was let go just last month. Left At Home Transcription....
Jul 02, 2011

I have been doing transcription for about 15 years now. After leaving MedQuist due to their bad management, I have been hopping around for several years not able to find the right match for me. Everything that sounds great at the beginning turns out to be the opposite. Either the pay is cut in half for their horrible speech recognition or it pays well and the program that they use just isn't very productive. I realized I had no choice but go back into the hospitals when my last position ...
