New drug book suggestions? Saunders out of print now. - llr

Posted: Feb 07, 2013

The Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book is no longer being published.

Does anyone else have a drug reference they like that they use?  (And please don't point me to websites - I know the websites...I also like to have an actual, physical book handy, as well.)

Thanks!!

I have always used and liked the Quick Look Drug Book. Published by Lippincott and Williams.

So that's why I didn't get my new one...SM - Old Anon

this year. I had auto ship. I have gotten it since it first came out in 1992. I also like a "book" reference. I wonder if Ellen would keep it up as a website. I'd prescribe to it.

Nope - They're **DONE** - sm

I actually sent them an email to tell them that I would miss the book. They sent back a very nice response. I love that book...REALLY bummed...

This is the notice on their website:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The end of the line!
The 2012 edition of our award-winning reference book is the last one in the series; there will be no 2013 edition. After its continuous annual publication for the last 20 years, the publisher has decided to cease publication of our book.
It seems that an increasing number of transcriptionists stretched the purchase of new editions of Drake & Drake from every year/every other year to once every 3 or 4 years, which has driven sales below the point of profitability. In fact, many transcriptionists have stopped buying professional references altogether, which suggests the eventual demise of all professional medical references written specifically for transcriptionists.
[Look at the Drake & Drake you currently own. If your copy is dated 2010 or earlier, you’ve contributed to the demise of our book. Fortunately, the 2012 edition is still available, and you should order one while supplies last. Yes, the information is over a year old, but that shouldn’t bother you, since you’re comfortable working with drug information that’s several years older than that.]
Some transcriptionists are using Internet resources for “free” medical information. Most medical information sites on the Internet contain information for consumers — often incorrect — and “forums” where anyone can chime in with an opinion. They are not aimed at allied health professionals, and therefore do not contain the information transcriptionists require, in a format that allows you to quickly look up the information and get back to work. The few medical information sites that are reliable and up-to-date charge a subscription fee, often substantial.
There are professional drug references we trust — both online and in print — that you can use to replace Drake & Drake, but they are written specifically for doctors and pharmacists. (As you can imagine, doctors and pharmacists are not going to use “free” Internet sites for drug information, and personally, we wouldn’t trust any who did!) Here are two of the top doctor/pharmacist references that we use (click the links for ordering information):
â€Â˘ One of the best, most comprehensive, and most complete drug references is Drug Facts and Comparisons. You can get it as a loose leaf edition with monthly updates for $549/year (this is the version we use). Or as an annual reference book for $267.25. Or as an annual “pocket version” (abbreviated book) for $95.95.
Electronically, Drug Facts and Comparisons is available as an annual CD-ROM for $270. Or as a CD-ROM updated monthly (contact the publisher for the annual subscription price). They also have an online version (contact the publisher for the annual subscription price).
â€Â˘ Another reference we use is Martindale’s Complete Drug Reference. It runs $775 for the two-volume set, which is published every other year. It contains information on 6,000 generics, 161,000 brand-name drugs, and includes information that’s difficult to find in other resources.
We’re sorry that the publisher has decided to discontinue the publication of our book, but we understand the reasoning behind that decision. We thank you for your support over the years.
Wow with the "but that shouldn't bother you" parenthetical statement especially. - sm
Maybe someone should tell them about the big drop in MT pay over these ensuing years? I loved that book too, but a lot of what's written in that site notice I wouldn't call "nice," so I'm glad I didn't put any more money in their pockets. Back to my "free"! drug site (yeah, it basically is, unless I'm supposed to count every site I visit as a fraction of my Internet bill) and opinionated word board "forum" (not the one here). Quelle condescending.
Oh, and hey Drake & Drake, too late now, but "codeine" shouldn't be capped in Tylenol with codeine.
WOW - SayWhat
[ In Reply To ..]
Ditto on that one. How rude to even insinuate that MTs are the reason they won't be getting their royalty checks anymore. The ivory tower dwellers are so out of touch with reality.
To clarify: That wasn't their response - that was on the website. - nm
I can only hope the e-mail really was "nice" because, once again, I don't find that site notice to be so at all.
Apparently my reading comprehension skills have left me. NOW I understand it was on the site and not from Ellen Drake. That makes more sense. Ellen Drake is one of the kindest and most gracious people on earth. It is unthinkable that she would ever be snarky. She is the opposite of the tone of that site notice. While I can understand the publisher's dismay (and BTW, Saunders, I DO have the 2012 edition, as I updated yearly), but I do not think their site notice reflects the professionalism they would like to achieve in the MT world. If they are going to publish for MTs (or not) they need to be a tad bit kinder in their responses. And I need to be a tad bit more intelligent in my reading. Again, Ellen, if you are reading this, I apologize and am sorry!
It *is* by Ellen and Randy Drake. - no apology needed
[ In Reply To ..]
I and another poster misunderstood OP's original post about what was "nice," which was a separate e-mail she received from them. But the site notice is indeed by Ellen and Randy, signed at the bottom by them. The snark is all theirs. (notice "our" and "we're sorry")
"The 2012 edition of our award-winning reference book is the last one in the series; there will be no 2013 edition.
....
We're sorry that the publisher has decided to discontinue the publication of our book, but we understand the reasoning behind that decision. We thank you for your support over the years.
(see link)
I'm also galled not just by the bracketed statement but another farther down, about how "As you can imagine, doctors and pharmacists are not going to use ''free'' Internet sites for drug information..." I don't how many or what percentage, but I don't doubt that a lot of health professionals use the free versions of Epocrates for quick reference (at least for as much as the amount of info we're also required to know, correct spelling and dosage; not interactions). And I certainly have the sense to discern what "free" (what's with the scare quotes with that each time?) information is reliable or not. Some of those free sites even have enormously helpful features, like a wildcard search or phonetic search, that no book can compare with.
I can well imagine they're quite disappointed about what increased Internet resources and the economy of MT have done to their book sales, but I could still do without that condescending, self-righteous tone in their statement and will never purchase another thing with their names on it.
Yeah, I was surprised, too - Old Pro
Because I have had peripheral dealings with Ellen Drake over the years. It is not like her to be so snarky.
That wasn't the response. That was a "form letter" on the website as to why no - 2013 edition. /nm
Hi there -
I wanted to write and let you know that I am truly disappointed that your book will no longer be published. I have been a medical transcriptionist for 10+ years, and your book has always been my #1 reference - like my right hand. The format was great, good size, even nice paper...
I understand the reasons why it is not being published anymore, but please know there are many of us out here who will greatly miss your book!! All the best to you in the future!
Thank you,
Me
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thank you for the kind words. We will greatly miss doing the book, too. The book, the CD, speaking at transcription seminars and conventions, and donating door prizes at those meetings was the way we chose to support the difficult work y'all do. Continued blessings to you and yours.

My last copy of Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book is so marked up that I bet I have a "new" drug name added on nearly every page! LOL. Maybe not quite, but pretty close!

I second the opinion that I've always liked the Quick Look Drug Book. It doesn't have as many drug names as Saunders always had, but it's a really great book that I've used a lot, too.

MTs still use books? - Who knew..

I haven't had a real book on my desk since about 2001. I don't think I could stand it. I use the LWW Quick Look Drug Index for my reference.

Speech Recognition Editing   Performing SRT editing successfully requires a somewhat more specialized skillset than that involved in traditional, manual transcription. There is a different eye/ear/brain coordination dynamic at work in SRT editing compared to transcribing, which often makes it more challenging to identify errors in an SRT-draft document. It is more common in SRT editing for the brain to be "tricked" into thinking that the eye has seen what the ear has heard, due to the lac ...
