Good drug reference book? - workingmt

Posted: Feb 23, 2011

I am a newly hired MT and do not have a drug reference book yet.  I am looking for suggestions for a good drug reference book.  Also, looking for any other suggestions that may help me improve my knowledge and speed.  Thanks!

dont buy book... google or drugs.com - save your money

:)

and if you google drugs - sm

You can type, for instance, Ativan * mg and it will give you the dosage, or if you only hear dosage, you could type that ( * 75 mg) and it will give you any drugs with that dosage.

Drugs.com also has a Medical Transcription search feature that if you only hear beginning or ending of drug, you can type it in and get suggestions.

Thjanks for this tip...I didn't know that...(no message) - MT 44

Saunders Pharm Word Book - sm

I know there are LOTS of MTs who prefer google or some other electronic search for drugs -- and I use Google all day long for other things. Drug book is the only book on my desk, in fact. For some reason, however, with drugs I prefer the book at my elbow. Habit? Maybe, but it works for me -- is quicker and easier to find exactly what I am looking for. I like Saunders because it give me all the info I need - brand name, generic name, common uses/diseases related to the drug, and dosages. Even though drugs change every day, I only replace my book every 2 years, and that works for me. Very rarely do I come across a drug not in my book. If I do come across a new drug - I just write it in. Just got my 2011 edition - $45 with shipping. So, for roughly $2 a month, I have my favorite reference -- not all that expensive for a reference book, IMO.

I too prefer Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book by Drake & Drake. You see what the drug is used for and the different dosages - also generic versus namebrand.

If I get stumped by a drug, then I will go to the Internet.

I personally use Drugs@FDA. You can put - sm

in a combination of letters that are in teh drug and it will pop them up. I also use rxlist.com. Here is the link for Drugs@FDA. http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/

At rxlist.com will also give the dosages drug also.

Thank y'all...You've made my day of work a lot easier...(No message) - MT44

I like the Saunders drug book - because it has all the dosages

which you have to dig a lot deeper for on drugs.com and others. Actually, I use the book when I'm not sure I'm hearing a dosage right, and I use drugs.com if I'm not sure of the drug name in the first place. So I use both.

Anyone remember the bad old days when all we had was a 3 year outdated PDR to work with?

I get all my drugs from drugs.com and drugstore.com. Also there are some other good sites. When I get a new drug, I write it down and the next day before I start work I put them in my speller and make macros for the brand, generic, dose, and use. It really speeds things up you see a difference after the first week.

Most CPs Make Reference To The Book Of Stye 2.
Oct 24, 2014

Has anyone actually read all 500+ pages? Our group was told we were doing headings the wrong way for an account which is new to our group, but that was not listed in the CP. When questioned, we were directed to the BOS2. Fortunately, we were given the path to find that section. Although some of what was demanded was in the BOS2, other demands were not. Very frustrating. I have found the BOS to be so unwieldy to use, that I normally do not bother. Of course, this put my panties in a bun ...

Question About Stedman And Drug Book
Jul 16, 2010

My computer has in its programs section Stedman's and a drug index.  The amount of memory taken up is sizeable, so I'm assuming the entire electronic book is contained in the file.  I'm certainly no computer genius and am afraid to attempt to open and launch these without knowing what steps to take.  Does anyone know how I would go about opening the file, creating a desktop shortcut and launching them?  I'd love to be able to use them...if I could get to ...

What Kind Of Electronic Drug Book Are You Using?
Jul 24, 2014

I have used the Quick Look Drug book (electronic version) for years made by LWW (Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins) and each year they notify me when the new year's version is available - now turns out, since I did not get notification of the 2014 version the company is not taking that book any more, regular or electronic. This was a Stedmans version that worked with the ReadyReferenceBookShelf process where all words books, electronic, are connected - when I asked about a replacement LWW sa ...

Good Drug Research Sites?
Apr 27, 2012

Hi all. I'm wondering what sites are your favorite for drug researching? The main issue right now is a sentence that has me wondering. It says: "The patient has no known allergy for the s/l listed." I've never heard it put that way before. He must be talking about the meds the patient usually takes, but, if he's been taking them, of course he has no allergies to them! This is a separate sentence as I have it in caps. Do you need anything else? I have tried looking up anything tha ...

Reference Books

Question regarding use of reference books....I've been working for the same transcription company for 10 years and have kept very busy in that time, but as of the last six months, they have lost accounts and work has dropped off significantly.    I applied for a job last week that asked me which reference books I currently use.  To be honest, I haven't renewed any of my reference books in about 8 years, as I found it to be much, much quicker to locate terms via the Internet if you ...

Reference Problems
Jun 20, 2011

Does anyone else have problems supplying work references?  It seems the jobs I'm interested in all very emphatically ask for work references that can be verified and I've worked at home for just two companies in the past 10 years and had no contact with any other employees besides my supervisors.  I definitely don't want to give the current employer as a reference so that leaves me one that I worked for six years ago.  Not sure what to do in this case. ...
