New Career Job Hunt Query - see msg pls

Posted: Mar 25, 2013

Hello, all-

I am in search of non-MT work.  I have noticed a lot of sites (like indeed.com) who show listings of jobs in my area when I do a general Google search.  For instance, I'll type in something like receptionist jobs, then my city and state, and I get choices for indeed.com, etc.

Does anyone know if the person who applies has to pay a fee or percentage of their pay for a period of time, if they land the job?

Thanks! Trying desperately to get out of MT, but I don't want to be spending all kinds of unnecessary money doing it.

I have applied to a ton of jobs on Indeed. As far as I know, there are no fees as it is just a job board. I hope you have better luck than I am having. I have been applying to eveything that I feel qualified for since August and have not had one interview.

I had 1 job interview. I was told I was 1 of 7 he was interviewing. Unfortunately, somebody who had a "connection" snuck in and interviewed and got the job. Found out it was a much younger woman too. Hard to compete when you are in your 50s and the others are 20s and 30s, and some with bachelor's degrees. I keep trying though.

I'm approaching 60 at a rapid speed and I'm having problems getting a response from half the MTSOs too! I too interviewed for a non MT job and got beat out by an adorable blonde. She was sitting there when I went in and I figured "no way will they hire this seasoned person". AARP always says that companies like hiring older people - Where is the question?

Unless you're hired? I don't think they ask for a DOB when you're applying to test, do they?

they may not specifically ask your age, but - they can figure out

from your "education" area as to when you went to school and how many years of experience you have. They can figure it out without directly asking, and YES! It is a MAJOR factor in not getting a job at this point. Just look around you at any office, restaurant, etc....only the "young" are pretty much employed these days. I am in my mid-60s and experiencing a LOT of this. It is scary.
I Do Not See That - Maybe because I live in FL

they check my employment history. I don't give my DOB, nor my SS# until I get an actual job offer. I don't even list all my former MT jobs, but of the three I usually do list, I was at one of them for close to 30 years. Dead giveaway.

I don't put the years I worked, or when I went to school, either. But all they have to do is call the former employer (their phone numbers are usually required fields), and HR tells them what years I worked there. And what's really sad is if they call the schools I went to, in some cases the classes I took don't even exist anymore. So of course, whoever answers the phone is going to say something like, "Oh, we haven't offered that course since 1977".

I'm in my late 50's and have not experienced age discrimination, I don't live in Florida either. I put my years of employment and the dates I attended school on my resume. I have also updated my skills since my MT job ended. If you haven't taken any courses since 1977 that could be part of the problem. Sad to say, but people aren't impressed anymore that we were MTs forever. I can understand the employment verification, but I sincerely doubt that many potential employers take the time to call the schools we attended. If they did, the response probably would not be the one you anticipate. I know age discrimination happens, but it is also illegal. If you suspect it is happening to you, there are things you can do. I have a job outside of MT but it took forever to find it; I gained knowledge just going through the interview process each time. Instead of the age issue, I am finding more often that relatives of people in high places or someone who knows someone are the ones who get the jobs and that is also very irritating.

If you can prove that they chose her instead of you because she was an "adorable blonde" you can sue them for discrimination. Actually, you never saw her resume or were present for the interview so you don't know why she was chosen, maybe her salary requirements weren't very high. Hang in there, a lot of youngsters don't stick around and move onto greener pastures, that job may be open again in a few months.

Query About Those Who Have Lost The
Jan 06, 2014

It is quite a shock the first pay check? I have always made it - lost the QA one but that one always seemed to be half tax anyway, so did not mind so much, but now that will be $100 (typically was my production bonus) less for me a week and also no incentive whatsoever to type more per line OR any more at all. I am certainly NOT going to spend 3 months trying desperately to get "back on top" and get the production bonus again. It just seems so arbitrary, and the errors have been ramped up, both ...

Nov 09, 2014

Fellow Enterprise platform users, have you ever lost the red box around the text and wondered why? Once it is gone you can no longer move about the report with ease, the facility to go to a particular place by Alt-R or double click no longer works. If anyone has figured out why this happens - i.e., have I inadvertently hit a combination of keystrokes that caused this, have I deleted some bit of ISR that was crucial to the red text box? Very confusing and when you are in a 10 minute long report ...

Job Hunt Question
Jul 14, 2011

Question:  I have been talking to a couple of companies and one I was talking to quite a bit.  This company asked me a few questions and I wrote back last night (we were writing back and forth a few times about the job and my resume, etc).  Now today I have heard absolutely nothing.  Should I be concerned?  I am always worried I have said the wrong thing when people seem really interested and then all of a sudden are MIA.  Should I wait until tomorrow to write back ...

MT Career
Jul 21, 2010

Just doing a little survey here:  Do you think the medical transcriptionist is becoming more and more obsolete?  I have been in the field for a long time and have already lost a couple of jobs due to technology or work being contracted out.  It seems to be the one job I was always able to find as there was also a need, especially if you're experienced.  Nowadays, we're talking VR, editors, etc. etc. and the pay is not getting any better.  Personally, I have alw ...

My MT Career Is Done.
Jun 30, 2011

I am just a little fish in a big pond, very rarely posted here, but loved to read the posts!  I felt though I had to post tonight as I am very sad. For the last 15 years, I was an MT, but tonight was my last shift and typed my last report - a discharge summary. Same thing I started on all those years ago.  My account is going VR on July 1, and I was told my wage would go from 9 cents a line to 4 cents.  No matter how they crouch it in rah-rah terms (increased produc ...

I began a training program for transcription but have since learned that field isn't promising at this point. From the perspective of someone with experience in the coding field, would you recommend coding as a career or would you suggest possibly RHIA? I would appreciate ...

I am about 90% done with my preemployment process at a county position in a neighboring town.  It will not be too soon for me start as we got word today that we lost one of the biggest contracts they had and they wont be getting a new one until February. Considering MT Career... Should I Do It?

New MT Looking For New Career!!! HELP!
Apr 08, 2013

Well, I wish I would have looked at this forum before going to MT school.  I tried working for two different MT companies.  First one I hated the platform/pay and the second one I really liked the account and platform but my work wasn't "clean enough" and they let me go after two weeks. I think I got canned because I questioned some QA redlines and was told I was wrong (no, no comma.  Yes, you put a comma.  That's hypenated.  No, not hypenated.)  I even ha ...

What Happened To MT Career?
Jun 04, 2010

I am reading on this board and seeing that people from Medquist are being let go, places are being bought out, hospitals are selling in-house to the outside services now.  The services charge a decent amount of money to these hospitals, but we see pennies of it.  What is sad is that what we do is very important, yet we are treated like all we do is type words (and anyone who has done ESL docs know it isn't just words - it's format, it's incorrect pronunciation, inco ...
