After 10+ years of typing numerous specialties, I am interested in running my own transcription business. Do you have any suggestions on where/how to get work?

I would think this is a topic you'd considered before making the choice, but obviously any medical facility that has providers who may dictate.

Small places you can market to with a flyer/postcard and a followup. Large places usually require bidding on contracts.

How will you get the dictation?
How will you bill?
How will you get the work completed?
How will you maintain HIPAA compliance (including the necessity to have a security officer, which can be yourself but you'll need to be up on that stuff.)
How long will you store records securely? Or will you?

Always wondered, when dealing with a hospital, who makes those decisions? Medical Records Department? Purchasing Department? Hospital Administrator? Who do you actually send the info to?

I've worked with major hospitals where I started at the medical records department selling myself to the Director of medical records or in some cases whoever was heading the transcription department, on to a board of physicians, then on to actually dealing with the purchasing department.

Sending them something won't do you much good. You'd more than likely need to call and make an appt to meet with someone in person.

For some hospitals, you have to bid on the accounts. You'd probably be best served by contacting the transcription department by phone and asking who handles these decisions and then trying to get an appt. The hospitals are highly competitive so you have to have your ducks in order with answers to all the questions ahead of time.

FINANCE! Yes, the bean-counters have most of the say over who gets the contract for a particular hospital account now. That's why so many have gone offshore- the CFOs do not care about quality, only price.

I turn down an abundance of offers because there simply aren't enough hours in the day. I also have long-term (20-plus years) MT friends who I consider to be reliable, dependable and are unhappy in their present situations.

I just need to make the time to really research what would be involved and test the waters to see if I could land a couple of worthwhile accounts, small to start and then build up.

I received a call today from a recruiter at U-Scribe in response to a resume I must have sent in. I have done some Google research as well as searched through this forum. There's not much to be said about this company except that they are hiring. The gentleman I spoke with today told me they are very backlogged. I had applied to transcriptionamerica.com. I received an email back from a Nancy Lawson, National recruiter asking me to transcribe a sample file. I did this and when I tried to email it back to the address that she sent it from, I keep getting a failed delivery notice saying that the person's inbox is full. Has anyone had any experience with this company? I sent my resume for a job posting and was contacted right away. Anyone heard of this company. We got a flyer from them today at work and they say they only charge 6.5 c per line, all US-based, no outsourcing. Looked up their website and they say they are one of the largest transcription companies in the US (never heard of them). Did some weekends ER reports to DW Medical Transcription, Atlanta, GA from June 20 to Dec 15. They still owe $1,400 for Oct to Dec work. Their accountant lied "Your check has been mailed. This company is unbelievable....sent resume to them to get a letter back from stating that I had to have a proof of passing a certified HIPAA course which ok I get that but then it goes on to state that they want proof of having $300,000 of general liability insurance and want $250 dollars from me as a deposit on their software.
