I have been a transcriptionist for 30+ years. This past year, the hospital I was working for replaced myself and 27 other fabulous ladies with an outside service. I am now working for a service, and 85-90% of the reports I get are editing and the rest transcription. My paychecks are frightening. As far as editing goes, I just don't see it. Am I doing something wrong?

Nope, you aren't doing anything wrong. They say (whoever they are) that you can edit so much more quicker than transcribing, but I've been editing now for 4 years (transcribing for 35 years) and I do the same lines I transcribe when I edit; just a ploy to pay us less and less.

Worked in-house, good money. Job outsourced, laid off. I'm now making half what I used to doing editing. Yes, it was frightening. A month's pay didn't even cover my mortgage payment. So, I took early retirement to make up the difference AND had a small IC gig as well. If it's any consolation, you will get faster at editing as time goes on. It really is a new skill you're learning. Of course getting faster will never bing you up to your former pay. Do whatever you can to find another source of income to supplement your pitiful pay and do it now, really. If your so inclined, get career training find another job. I didn't want to do that, but that's me.

Very few can edit at the level needed to make more money and most will struggle to match what they can do with straight transcribing. I'm pretty good at editing with a very good platform and a company that really does pay attention to which dictators should or shouldn't be on SR, amd I average about 380 L/h editing and 230 L/h transcribing. That's VBC counting without spaces, headers or footers. My pay is down about 10% to 15% from when I was being paid for spaces, headers and footers without any editing.

and VBC and no headers or footers. As I said, it's a very good platform with attentive managers who only put good candidates for SR on that system. On some dictators I can get up to 600 per hour. I do a mix of about 50:50 editing and straight transcription. It also helps that I really enjoy editing.

This situation is rather universal. The transcription companies halve your pay when they push you to editing, but there's no way you can double your production. Therefore your income dramatically decreases.

However, the companies are increasing their margins, since they only pay a couple of cents per line for the technology. That's a lot less than they are saving by reducing your pay.

I am not an MT. But I feel very bad for this honorable profession, which is being decimated by technology and (corporate) greed.

I also feel bad in a more selfish sense. Our Smartype speedtyping software actually enables MTs to transcribe reports faster than they can edit speech-rec drafts. But all the benefits derive to the MT, not the company. So the companies are incented to force editing, even though it's often of little benefit...except to their profit picture.

If I were an MT, I would be actively searching for a career transition, such as becoming a remote scribe for EHRs.

and never did any editing until about a year and a half ago. The most challenging thing to me is to separate what I hear from what I see. It's very easy to think you "hear" what you see (the power of suggestion), and it takes practice! Not something you can just leap into.

- VR is slower.
- Often, the software that was formerly good when straight typing, is slowed down considerably by the VR platform added to it.
- The better work (where you stood half a chance of making good line counts) will get sent to India, where, stupid move or not, these MTSOs are gearing up for having Indians do the VR, and getting rid of all American MTs.
- The thing that will slow you down the most is that they'll put doctors on VR that have NO BUSINESS being on it. That in turn will produce a jumbled mess that takes longer to edit than to just erase and retype. (At the same lousy pay you're getting for VR, even if you retype it.
- Staying focused and awake will become a major, daily problem. I now need so much caffeine to keep me from falling asleep with my foot on the pedal, and to get me through each lethally boring day, that I wake up with a pounding headache almost every morning.
- Your general typing skills will fall off, the more VR you do. Two years of doing almost 100% VR have reduced my formerly excellent typing skills back down to my junior-high, manual typewriter levels.
- When your employer claims that VR is "faster", "better", and yada-yada-yada, they will likely raise the minimum number of lines you're expected to do. Which will likely not be possible. It will in turn give them one more way to stack the deck in their favor, when it comes to forcing Americans out of this field. If you try to go fast enough to make the counts, you'll make more errors, which they'll likely write you up for. If you slow down to ensure everything is correct, you won't be able to make the lines.
Win-win for them; lose-lose for the MT.

So I have been working for private doctors for the past few years. Prior to that I worked for national companies doing straight transcription. Rates back then were 8 to 10 cpl, with 8 cpl being pretty low. Now 8 cpl seems to be where companies tap off. Ok, finally, the horrors have happened to me. All was well, but now I'm getting seriously pissed. I work 8 hour shifts 5 days a week. Those hours are mandatory. I've had the same line rate (9 cpl) for 5 years, and I notice the new accounts they offer MTs pay 7.5 or 8 cpl at most. I assume that the MT companies set up a contract with the client for them to pay on a per-line basis. Of course, they charge more than they pay us; that's how they make their money & that's fine. I type my butt off full time and don't make anywhere close to $2k a month. This is the first time I've gotten to see it since it's the first time they've had enough work for me to make my line count.
