MT schedules - is 2 weekend days normal

Posted: Jan 27, 2011

I thought usual MT shifts involved one weekend work day a week.  Is this normal?  I was offered both weekend nights and obviously they are "allowed" to do what they want, but seems a little unfair.  I don't expect any nasty responses of like take what you can get sort of thing, I am just trying to get a consensus of schedules and if I should bring this up, considering there won't be any work on the weekends...

thanks ya'll

Companies can make their own expected schedule requirements. - sm

It's true that we usually see a week schedule (full-time) that includes 1 weekend day. However, many companies have enough need that their part-time or even some full-time positions require both weekend days.

There is no federal or state law governing this.

If you want the job, you agree to the schedule.

The only way I get a day off at all is to be so sick that I literally can not get out of bed, so if you are offered a job that actually gives you a day off at all, it is better than none at all.

You poor thing! You need a break.

i work 7 days a week too and love it! i just don't feel right if i don't work at least some every day - i'm one of those though that just love what i do - i love the difficult dictators, the ESLs and fast guys - and i really enjoy when we're trying to beat the clock - i'm probably an oddity but i'm okay with that lol!

1 day - ontop

As mostly day-time MTs(I split my day up a bit and do a couple of hours in the evening), we are required to just cover 4 hours on either a Friday evening or over the weekend.

I don't know if 2 weekend days is "normal" but it does happen. At my on site job, one MT works Saturday through Wednesday, several others, including myself, work one weekend day every week. Many hospitals staff their on-site departments with MTs who work every weekend, but on site there is always work. Generally if you agree to it, that's your schedule. Your company should offer premium pay for weekends.

Where I work, we get a lot of extra work on weekends sm - Scooby Doo

and I can't remember a time where my team leader wasn't begging for extra hours on weekends. I think you might be mistaken thinking "there won't be any work"! Obviously this company knows where they have schedule needs and that's why they are asking for 2 weekend days. You should be upfront though, if it won't be something you can do.

I think they have the Sun-Thurs and Tues-Sat schedules because they're too lazy to write a schedule that rotates weekends. I worked a Tues-Sat, and it was a ghost town on Saturdays.

Why don't you think there won't be any work on the weekends? - sm

Did someone tell you this? Do you already work for the company and are just changing shifts?

A shift working both weekend days is just a shift like all the others. The MTSO has a need for someone to work these days or they wouldn't hire for it.

I wouldn't just assume there will be no work. Doctors and PAs work the weekends also, someone needs to type their reports!

I was thinking about this the two days ago when I was completely out of work again. The company I work requires everyone to work one weekend day. The only schedule options are Sunday to Thursday or Tuesday to Saturday. Doesn't that mean that every single person on the account is working on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday? I would rather work both weekend days and actually have work than spend the better part 2 or 3 days each week fighting for what's available.

IC Schedules
Sep 08, 2010

I am new to independent contractor status, so I just have a few questions, so bear with me.  I will be contracted with a company to do the work, who is contracted with the the business that needs the work done.  I was told of the work schedule.  I was told by a legal person that ICs set their own schedules; days/hours to work.  So which is it?  Can the transcription company that I would contract with tell me the hours I need to work or can I tell them which hours/days I ...

No Set Schedules?
Jun 08, 2013

Are there any companies anymore that do not require you to set in stone your hours that you want to work?  The company I work for now has a 12-hour timeframe that you can do your 8 hours in, but its one of those things that when you start, if you get up or get a phone call or have to do anything whatsoever, the time is counted off of your productive time, and you have to add it back on the back end so you end up working throughout the whole 12 hours to get your 8. What if I don't want ...
