Life after transcription TIA - What else can I do

Posted: Sep 06, 2014

Hey all, after 10 years of being an MT, I'm thinking about jumping this sinking ship.  Unfortunately, I can't bear the thought of working outside the home again.  Is there any job out there that I can do at home that isn't a scam and is stable?  Or, if I have to work outside the home, what jobs are out there that my experience would complement?  I'm starting to get anxious with how things are going with MModal, my current employer, and waiting for that ax.  TIA

Most of them - that are not MT are

in either customer service, tech support, management or sales and marketing. These are the verifiably legitimate ones. The customer service jobs are a lot of the cell phone companies with a lot of abuse by the customers who don't pay the bill, or else collection jobs where you are expected to abuse customers who can't pay the bill. If you want to stay home bad enough to do it, these are real jobs, full and part time, with employee status and benefits. One is an outfit called Convergys. I think the pay is only something like $9 an hour, but it's hourly pay and if hired, you can work from home.

Other work from home is coding and billing, but you'd have to invest in the time and money to get training for that unless you can find it through some of the free educational resources online. But you'd still have to put the time in.

You could try CNA. I know back in the day I never considered that, but I did that in 2011, signed up because my daughter wanted to. I have worked with patients in their homes. You can take them to doctors visits, do their shopping for them, a lot of them don't need real CNA care, but some of them do. I dd that and now I just finished LPN school. Still waiting to take the test for my license, but am back to doing transcription after doing CNA for 2 years, because I was lucky enough to find a transcription job which I hadn't been in the past. I know what you mean about leaving the home, this is good to work from home, but the jobs are really getting scarce and underpaid.

A couple of my friends and neighbors have been very successful at these 2 endeavors.

No idea what's involved with watching other people's kids, certification and that sort of thing, but if you dig it, it might be worth looking into!

I'm always amazed at how many people will come up out of pocket for someone to watch their dog/pups while they are at work, instead of leaving them at home! Even out here in the sticks where the median income is less than $40,000 and people have to travel a bit out of their way to bring them/pick them up.

Just some other things to think about that don't involve sitting in a chair that you can do from home.
:) Best of luck!

I have a former MT friend who walks dogs. She started several years ago, walking them during the daytime for working people, and also days and evenings for people on vacation. Her second year she made more money doing that on the side than in her FT medical office reception job. I currently walk 2 dogs for 1 client once a day (weekdays at noon). Takes about half an hour and I make $300/month. I've been in MT for 43 years and ready to quit it for the last 10. I have also sewed for that long, and I've found my key to quit MT with that - doing alterations for a bridal shop, which I love, and making a lot more money. Early SS retirement starts in January - so I will be DONE with all things MT related by the end of this year and it can't come fast enough. I highly recommend any younger MTs to start looking for an alternative. I've been in this business long enough to go from excellent to good to bad and it's only headed downward from there :(

I left MModal in July. - sm

I've been an MT for over 25 years and have seen this field go from a very lucrative, respected career to being an"expendable job" and the first thing to cut when administration wants to save money. This field is at its worst point right now, but I truly do believe that it will turn around.

When you search the large job sites like Monster or even your own state job search, you find more in-house MT jobs than those with national MTSOs or in remote settings. I just got a job back in-house when I left MModal. When I applied, the HIM manager said that with the latest large HIPAA breach there is a lot of buzz about risk management costs outweighing the cost of bringing MT back in-house. Even with EMR, there is always going to be a need for editors/MTs.

This humungous MT ship can't turn on a dime, and it will take a while, but the tide is already turning.

If you have a craft that you are really good at, there are several sites where you can sell your goods and make good money at it as well. I sold on Etsy for 2 years and made well over $8000 a year doing it. It is a lot of work and takes a lot of your time, but if you enjoy your craft, the time is much better spent than being anxious with MModal. If this is something that interests you, try Etsy, Zibbet, 11 Main, even Facebook. You can sell from your own FB page now. This just may be something to hold you over until things start improving...and if they don't, work at it as building your own business doing what you really love.

this is heartening - thank you

I keep hoping that enough will finally be enough, and the work, all work, not just MT, but the factory work that is necessary for blue-collar workers to thrive, will come back soon.

I hate to say it but these corporate heads sending work overseas, factory work included, are from the Baby Boomer generation, which was supposed to be anti-Establishment, if you remember. We turned out to be the truer hypocrites.

We need a few powerhouses to return the work, get all the accolades and back-patting, and others will follow.

I got hired on - ExMT

with a company that conducts medical history interviews over the phone with clients applying for insurance policies. Pay is better than MT and it's not a customer service "sales" position where you have to deal with irate callers. Having medical terminology in my background was what landed me the job. :)

What or where would you turn for employment if you are finally at the end of your rope with transcription?  I swear I do not have it in me to keep starting over when these positions of ours/mine, work hard, only for the accounts to be ripped out from under.. leaving you fighting for lines or looking elsewhere and having to start over!!  I have been doing this for so long that I feel sick and anxious, unsure where to even look for a job "outside"..... there, I said it.... Transcription At Home Changed My Life
Jan 19, 2013

In the year 2000 I started making 34,000 then by 2005 I was making over 55,000/year. I bought a house, thought eveything was good. Suddenly in in 2008 I made 37,452 and by 2009 I lost my house, my job and had to live on my 401K money that I had to take out early to survive on, plus unemployment of course. This year 2013 I made 18,000 dollars. I lost my standing in life, I feel depressed alot, I can't take my grandchildren out anymore like I used to, maybe once a year is all I can afford. ...

How Did My Life Get So Bad
Feb 01, 2014

Yes I have known for quite awhile the end is near for MT but I don't know what I'm going to do now.   20 years ago I was the envy of the medical record department, the lead transcriptionist that everyone thought was so smart, and I made more than almost anyone in the entire hospital.  Now I just feel stupid.  I keep wondering how my life got so bad.  It's so easy to say go back to school! learn a different skill! and I know some my age (55) have done that, ...

New Life
May 25, 2015

Happy Memorial Day!  I think I may be starting a new life for myself.  I have been a medical transcriptionist for the past fourteen years for a neurologist. With his new EMR system he decided to do it himself. I have had an awful time trying to find a new job. These big companies are just brutal-on my self esteem as well.  My husband is in the healthcare field and he mentioned to me coding and I had just been thinking to myself about what could I go back to school for but couldn&# ...

My accounts just went 100% ASR with no email warning or team meeting!  It takes too long to edit these jobs because ASR is the worst!  It seems that ASR is better at ESL docs than people who have a wonderful American accent and it takes longer to edit people who speak perfect English.  They have messed with me so much.  I have 4 babies to take care of and can barely make rent.  Foodstamps only gives us food and I have no extra money for things like electricity and i ...

Thinking About My Life
Mar 16, 2012

After reading the last few threads, I have been asking myself some hard questions. Why do I continue in this job that I clearly hate? I can't make ends meet, I am bored, and I know I am being taken advantage of, so why do I make the choice to stay? I try to continually remind myself I have a choice. No one is forcing me to do this job. I can quit or do something else. I feel the same as the rest of you, slave labor, boring VR, no respect for our skills and talents and we should be pai ...

Life Expectancy Of MT
Mar 12, 2014

With all this talk about the coding offer, what do you all think is the life expectancy of the current MTs? How quickly are we going to be phased out in favor of coders? Do you think MM will keep a skeleton crew of MTs on board and, if so, how will they be chosen? Do we hang on for however long and, once we're laid off, then collect unemployment? Or do we jump ship now? ...

Yes, Virginia, There Is Life After MM
Aug 03, 2014

In the last 5 months, I have been fired from MM after 16 years of dedicated service on my part (95.5% audit, buh-bye), have collected UE, applied for hundreds (literally) of jobs in the large metro area in which I live, cried on my husband's shoulder (the kindest and best of men) and helped take care of my ailing 92-year-old mom (what a sweetie). In the last month, my mom passed away (worried about me, not herself). In the last 10 days, my young dachshund passed away from lymphoma (e ...

Life After Nuance???
Oct 09, 2014

Tried to leave a couple of times, companies I went to got bought out by Nuance.  Ready to try again.  I know no company is perfect, but Fiesa and their additional layers of QA are driving me insane.  They probably aren't too worried about losing MTs, after all they have enough QA and QC to handle it all don't they? My question is whether you have found it to be a good thing to jump ship and start over again with another company.  Have been considering Keystrokes bu ...

Life After Nuance
Jun 09, 2015

I quit Nuance in April.  I was apprehensive, but the patient safety compensation plan, where scoring 100% QA, but over 10% QC, droppping my pay week after week had taken its toll on me mentally.  Also, I was OOW daily.  I was certainly made to feel it was all my fault, but that is not what this post is about.  I am sure those reading this are already too aware of the stress, inconsistencies and unfairness of working for Nuance. I started a new transcription job.  Straight typing.  Hired ...

Again, Life After Nuance
Jun 21, 2015

When I worked for Nuance, I came here and read this board daily while I was OOW--hoping through despair that things would change.  I have come back here twice since leaving, and it is almost painful to read.  There are other transcription companies that treat their employees much differently than Nuance.  I started with a new company.  The training has been amazing.  I ask a question, and the question is answered almost immediately through an IM that actually has a perso ...

Life's Little Instruction Book
Jun 29, 2010

I recently picked up a little book that was sitting on my bookshelf. It is called "Life's Little Instruction Book" It was written by a father for his son, and turned into a coffee table/bathroom book. It has 511 'life lessions' that one father wanted to tell his son. If you have the chance, you should pick it up. I thought I would share a few with all of you, I know I needed the reminder today: 1. Compliment three people every day. 99. Do You Spend 80% Of Your Life Worrying About Your Bad Job
