As an in-house MT we were required to wear business casual clothing. Another job required scrubs. Now that I work from home, I wear pJs, sweats, jeans, shorts, whatever.

I noticed that when I am "dressed" (not in pj's or sweats) that I seem to be more productive and I was wondering if others have noticed the same thing. Sometimes I wonder if the way we dress to transcribe affects our productivity as a professional employee. You know when you dress up to go out for the evening or a special event you seem to carry yourself differently and have a different attitude, so it just seems to make sense to me that dressing more professionally, even if working from home in your bedrooms (as I am) might make you more productive. I've also heard others say that they leave the house for a few minutes and then come back, log in and start working and that it seems to trick the brain into being in the at-work mode and they are more productive.

I am searching for ways to increase productivity besides the shortcuts and expander software and I was just wondering what everyone else does and if anyone else had tried the clothing aspect.

I can't say I dress "appropriately" so much, but I have noticed a huge difference on the days that I get up and do my time on my elliptical machine and then take a shower and start my day. The act of taking a shower is what tells me body to wake up and get going and even when I worked graveyards and was maybe going to work on 2 hours of sleep, I found that to be true.

Keeping to a schedule, getting up and getting ready for the day, rather than just getting out of bed and going to sit down at the computer has made a HUGE difference in my line counts and my mental acuity/attitude.

My sister fought off Casual Fridays at her job for many years because of that same attitude. She said if you were dressed casually, then you were going to take your job casually. I think there's some truth to that.

I have a sweet collection of scrubs from when I worked in an office eons ago, and that's what I wear for work. For some reason the "uniform" helps with the ol' work mo-jo. Plus they are super comfy.

When I'm transcribin' op notes, I wear a surgical scrub cap. Nah, I'm just jivin' ya there. Although now that I think about it....

I live in a climate where it's warm more than it's not. I need to be comfy, but not in PJs. I own a few cheap sun dresses that I probably wouldn't wear out anywhere, but they're fine for working at home. I'm comfortable, and reasonably presentable if someone comes to the door. I can also walk down the driveway and get the mail and not be embarrassed.

I always take a shower and get ready for work. I worked in an office for a long time and just carried that on when I started working at home. Yes it does make a difference.

It's funny, as I was just noting this fact this morning at 4 a.m. when I started my shift.

Most of the time, I do just start my day off in PJs but then get dressed later (about 7 a.m.) because I take my kids to school. I DO notice that when I'm "dressed for work" that I am more productive.

I do not wear pj's, I sleep in the nude, but when I work I wear shorts and a t-shirt. I usually do not shower until before bed, but I have always done that even when I worked in office, showered the night before cause I do not like to get out of bed before 15 minutes to hit the road for work. Geez no difference here, however, cannot work in the nude.

Unfortunately, for some production is based on whether there is work to be typed and how crappy the VR is that day.

the VR is so sophisticated, it can sense what the MT is wearing, and adjusts the amount of work accordingly, more to the well-dressed MTs, less to the messy ones...Nah, I didn't think so :)

What I would want to know, though, is what I have to wear to not get the screwed up demographics, the copies sent to docs whose last name can be spelled 50 different ways, the mumbly-fast-slurring-coughing dictators...is there some special hat, or socks, or bracelet? 'Cause that's what I want to be wearing.

strong coffee, a tidy work area and a 20-30 walk or workout (ie, Leslie Sansone or similar). The latter really does wonders for this old scribe.

gotten their pay docked 3 cents a line for critical errors, over 5% QA submission, etc. I haven't heard anyone actually say that happened to them. Is it just a threat ? I know they would LIKE to dock our pay. Who are they going to blame once they switch over to the EMR and there are a million mistakes on the chart? They won't have the MTs to blame any more, so I wonder, who will it be??? I wonder that most of us seem to be in the mid-40s and even later 50s or 60s that are sick of the MT garbage and want to get out by going back to school. Has anyone considered the fact of how old you/we will be when we graduate a program? Even a 1-year program likely will take 2 years to go through if somone has to work full-time to support themselves, even with loans to pay for school. Okay, I have to wonder if it costs so much to train an MT for a company that they would not work with their MTs to keep them happy in the work types and specialties they do. Most times instead if you are not happy with your accounts, they just fire you. Doesn't anyone work with anyone so it benefits the MT and the company both? Lately I have been setting a timer for an hour and have actually done this for a long time, just to see what I do in an hour... seems of late is getting harder to make more than 18.00 to 20.00 an hour... and I have 28 yrs experience... seems to me something has been set that makes it impossible to do any better, no matter the dictators, the difficulty of the dictation, etc, etc. etc... Im not sure if I am posting to the right board about this and I dont know anything about VR, but I am just wondering if anyone has lost their job to a doctor who has decided to go to VR and you subsequently got your job back because the VR sucked? My doc has talked to me about how in the future he wants to go to VR, but I told him I dont see that happening....not with him anyway. He gets very distracted, repeats things, says "no change that", etc. He may laugh or talk to the patient or ot ...

Regaring MTTest and their pass/fail inconsistencies - I'm wondering if they don't set these things to fail anything after a certain number of test takers. I'm just saying, if I were an MTSO hring a weed-wacker like MTTest, and with the high number of applicants these years, I'd be saying something on the order of "just send me the top 20." and so MTTest takes the top 20 from say...50, or even the top from after 2 days of open testing, and then 'defaults ...
