I thought about getting a nail technician certificate. - So much for THAT idea! sm

Posted: Jan 29, 2013

But the cost is around $5,000, the time is short only 6 months, but with working full time I would have no life with the classes being 4 hours every evening and 7 hours on Saturday. Okay, so if I commit myself to all of that, will I even be able to find a place to work? Most of the nail salons these days are chock full of Vietnamese workers. I rarely see salons with American nail technicians anymore.  What I would love to do is open my own salon, but where would I get the funds to do something like that? Am I just dreaming here or what?

Comments/suggestions would be appreciated! Laughing

look into getting govt grants - for the female entrepeneur

there are grants available to start your own business, but very detailed needing a business plan, etc. worth looking into though.

I attended cosmetology classes at a well-known community college for a fraction of the cost, and this was when acrylics were in their heyday. I had chronic bronchitis and was coughing up huge balls of acrylic despite wearing a mask. I also have several neighbors who are cosmetologists, most recently a neighbor who spent $20,000 in government loans of course, for her training and license. She was hired by the school finally but her hours were cut to part-time, very part-time...as in just barely enough to cover her student loan payment.

Instead of wasting money on a nowhere career, why do you not just brush up your skills and/or services and obtain your own clients?

Thanks for the info. In the meantime, I have been in this industry - 28 years, so there is no sm

brushing up I needs to do. What I'm looking for is to move on from MT as it's not what it used to be.

I've heard of some who do out-call, like to offices and other places. Once as a perk my local boss brought in massage therapists for 15-minute chair sessions. I would certainly prefer a long-term relationship with an American nail person, just for the conversation.

nails - broke student, for now

In my part of the country, 5K to learn a trade is a bargain. As far as giving up your time off, I've never been handed a new job. LOL I'm a year into school (post-Bacc) and I study 35 to 40 hours per week minimum.

When I am in town, I love visiting this place: http://www.polished.com/ Each customer has her own nail kit. Free Starbucks, sodas, and wifi. They don't do much with acrylics, so that horrible smell isn't present.

Nails are a big deal with the 20 something set. I've seen a lot of creative approaches lately, from manicurists visiting college residence halls, to offering poolside service at upscale apartment complexes.

If you love it, go for it. Good luck!

About the nail business, sadness was what I heard - Love nails

from a lady who works in the shop where I go. She said she and her husband both do the same type job. They are Vietnamese. She was telling me how many in this job come down with lung cancers working with the chemicals like they do. She said the couple knew of no other kind of work to do. They had her mother and father living with them. I asked about their age and health and although both not old, their health issues restricted both of them from seeking work with 1 having a stroke and the other cannot recall right now. I truly felt sorry for her. She talked as if this is a dead end job literally.

you could become an aesthetician - and work in a nice spa!

that would be great, don't you think!

Medical Records Field Technician Ad
Apr 17, 2013

Did anyone else question that advertisement?  First, they say that you can work at their locations, then later on they say that the candidates need to have internt access, that does not make sense.  Also, the list of people they consider good candidates does not make sense.  Coders and RNs to scan records?  I'm not saying it's beneath them, but it's just seems a little strange that they would seek those type of people (as well as some others on the list) for an ...

"nail Rest" After Fingertip Crush Injury
Feb 10, 2015

I'm typing a crush injury to a fingertip, with debridement and surgery, basically a tiny bit of fingertip amputation. The doctor several times mentions "nail rest" that might have to be excised. He says "nail rest" very clearly, but I can't find anything online showing that this is an official medical term, and I'd like to verify it before turning the report in. Thanks ...

"State Certified" Birth Certificate
Apr 25, 2015

I took some pre-employment documents to a notary yesterday.  The birth certificate, issued by the hospital where I was born 62 years ago, I was told would not do for ID because it was not "state certified".  In order to get a state certified birth certificate, you have to have the notary certify they have seen my birth certificate, then the state issues one they call "certified".  This makes absolutely no sense to me and only delays employment.  Anyone else had this experienc ...

Wmx - Another Thought On This
Sep 02, 2010

I think this was a very large account and they could have divided the MTs who had this as their primary and put them on various other accounts.  Yes, this would have overstaffed those accounts and more MTs would be getting NJA as we all scrambled for what work there was.  Also, this way WMX would not be putting out unemployement for anyone and soon most of us would not have benefits because we couldn't keep our line counts up with NJA all the time.  All in all, looks like the ...

I'm just wondering what is with companies not calling you after you have passed a test and said they will? I don't understand it. Yes,  I realize that they may have several people, but is it too much to ask for a phone call to do an interview or something? I Thought I Was The Only One
May 13, 2011

I just realized that no one cares about the quality of medical records anymore.  I have had to go to VR and I am now making anywhere between 4 and 12 dollars/hour.  I guess people care more about the quality of their hamburgers than they do peoples' healthcare. I have started to just send them through.  I don't even really listen to the work.  I look at it and change any major spelling errors, but other than that, what the VR says is what they get.  The fu ...

Could it be that the MModal and Nuance are buying all of these smaller, better MTSOs because they want to limit our employment options?  If MModal (the Q) and Nuance are the monopolizing companies, and an MT who works for them just had all she/he could take, where could she/he go?   Just a thought....   ...

Just A Thought Here...but...
Apr 11, 2013

Have you all ever thought of letting your own doctor/s know that you will no longer have a physician who sends his or her work to a company to be done overseas and that you will now demand that your medical records be done in the US or you will seek medical attention elsewhere?  Maybe start making a lot of noise on the doctor/hospital level? An ASR Thought
Oct 20, 2013

I am making stupid, idiotic mistakes that I never made before. Yes I know I am older than when I started this mess of a job. But, I think with this ASR garbage, first being so wrong all the time, then trying to remember what keystrokes to use, blah blah it actually kind of puts you in a "trance." Its like you see but you don't see. Does that make sense or maybe I am just going insane? ...
