I have a couple of dilemmas that I am not sure - sm

what to do about. I am on unemployment right now honestly making more than when I was working. It is not much, but it is steady. I have an offer for an interview with an MT company, but after all the other companies I have been with, I am about positive it will be the same as always (very little work, very low and unsteady pay...we all know the story). Should I even interview or stay with UI, which is steady and honestly better pay. Also, I have a friend wanting to help me out by letting me clean her house for extra Christmas money. I was excited and said yes, but then I would have to state that on my UI questions where it says did you work and were you paid and of course I would say yes. Way too scared to lie. My thing is, if I clean this house, I may not get my UI check next week. This may seem like a moral dilemma, but it is a dilemma. Should I clean the house/do the interview? I appreciate any kind responses to help!! Please no meanness.

Just my honest opinion, if I were in your position. Since you are already receiving them I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize getting your steady and regular unemployment benefits - I wouldn't do any interviews or clean any houses but I WOULD utilize the time going to school or doing something to move myself forward to getting out of this field. If you qualify for unemployment (or any other benefits) you will most certainly also qualify for a Pell Grant or other type of financial aid at your local college. There is no way I could sit home and do nothing but if I had the chance, I would definitely utilize this opportunity to get a degree or certificate in something else to get out of this field.

...how much would the extra Christmas money for cleaning amount to? As far as I know, anyone is allowed to give anyone a gift of up to $600 without it being subject to anything, any kind of needing to be "claimed." This isn't some stranger offering you a full-time or even any permanent part-time job after all. This is a friend helping you out, right? Why don't you say, "I'll give you a Christmas gift of cleaning your house this many times," and let your friend say, "I'll give you x amount of money as a Christmas gift." I mean, really? Having to claim every little penny is just ridiculous! JMHO. ;-)

Dilemma - MT

I would go for the interview. I have worked for many companies and no they are not all the same. Your unemployment may be steady right now, but it will run out and then what? As of right now, there are no extensions so you are only allowed 26 weeks of unemployment and that's it. You never know when you may be passing by an opportunity of a lifetime. I work for four MT companies and I get paid per line, but the work is so steady and so great that I make $18+ an hour for every job that I do. Sometimes I even make $30+ an hour. You need to at least do the interview to see what they are offering. How could you look at yourself in the mirror if you don't even try? By the way, if you are scared to clean a house for extra cash and not claim it, how could you not be scared they will find out you didn't interview for a job? One of the criteria for collecting unemployment is that you are actively looking for another job and you wouldn't be actively looking by turning down an interview.

I would go ahead and clean her house, but - have her pay you CASH. (sm)

I wouldn't let the UI know anything about it. Let's face it - if the government REALLY had your best interests at heart (or any of ours), it wouldn't be rewarding MTSOs for sending our work offshore, and driving our wages down.

So you should have NO GUILT AT ALL for making a few extra bucks here and there, and the gov'mt. doesn't need to know. After all, there's a lot the gov'mt. isn't telling US, right?

At this point in time I would stay with the Unemployment for now. At least it is a sure thing and puts food on your table. Transcription has gone down hill as far as making money goes and a good job is hard to find. If you get this job it may end up a nightmare and you have lost you UI for nothing. If they terminate you, at least in my state, you cannot go back on UI, there is a 10 week penalty for having a job and losing it or quitting. As far as cleaning houses, and I don't want to sound like I live off the system cause I work transcribing 7 days a week, the person you will be cleaning for is not going to report on her taxes she paid you to clean and your not going to be getting a 1099 - I say clean and collect. Everyone is trying their best to keep their heads above water.

Be careful with your unemployment. To work part time lessens your UE compensation in the future. It seems like the right thing to do, whatever work you get, but in the long run it's better to just have an empty period and collect.

ago and it stated I got a raise in my hourly wage (used for time off). Shocked but pleased, very much so. I am not going to ask anyone about it because I won't look this gift horse in the mouth!!! (1) Do you only fail if you fail a final at the end of the course, or are there tests throughout the course you have to pass to continue on? Have had me feeling as if some of us who have been at Transcend longer were not offered what they have been offering recently, maybe that is why I have seen so many people leave. Just an update for the posters I was speaking with the other night about reactivating my application at MQ and going part-time... Apparently once you're hired and have accepted a position, you do remain in the system and all it takes is reactivation to put you back into the process. The rep I spoke with was very nice and emailed the appropriate department to contact me tomorrow to get everything reactivated and continue processing me as a new hire. I'm not sure if testing ...

First, I had assumed that a Microsoft Word/Office Starter would be included -- it's not. I'd never done an upgrade before (late adopter/new machines) so that was an unwelcome surprise. I found Notepad and Wordpad under asscessories (and StickyNotes) but initially thought I had no word procesising at all.
