I am wondering how many MTs are working in EMR environment? - If so, do you perform other tasks?

Posted: May 19, 2011

I noticed some here have mentioned "templates" that autopopulate text - so that's probably for the EMR (electronic medical record). But there is talk of other things MTs might be able to do in the EMR besides transcribe dictated material. Do any of you or do you know anyone who has access to EMR for data mining or scanning in reports or other things? I attended a webinar earlier this week and am scheduled to attend another one tonight regarding the MT's role in EMR. But so far it seems mostly theoretical. I know there is software that is supposed to interface between what the MT transcribes and the EMR, but my question is - what else can an MT do besides transcribe when it comes to putting data in the electronic record.

Anyone?

Data mining and scanning are generally non-MT functions. I'm just starting to use Epic where I work. We've had our own EMR system for years but the providers dictated everything. We are doing a lot of data entry now because all the abbreviation expanders and normals from our old system are not compatible and all that has to be rebuilt. Eventually we will doing transcribing into and editing of the templates. There is an entirely other career called Health Care Informatics that involves some of the things you mention and there are college courses for that. I don't know if this helps but that's about all I now at this point.

My last job working in-house (where they phased out the MT's- namely me LOL) I scanned all documents from all the charts and input them all into EMR. Now, I work at home for a local doctor's group where they have EMR (Medent) and we type right into the system.

Scanning documents and inputting them into EMR is usually the job of a medical records clerk. Assembly and Analysis is a step higher because the charts have to be in a specific order to pass accrediation. Analysis consists of analyzing each and every record in the chart for signatures, dates, etc. For example a doctor making rounds gives an RN a verbal order to change a patient's medication. The RN notes the change in the record and the next time the doctor comes in and makes rounds he legally has to sign that order, either electronically or in a paper chart. So to analyze a chart you have to make sure each and every legal aspect of the chart is complete. It takes training that MT's don't normally have if their only job has been transcribing.
All very interesting. - OP

I am trying to think of ways that as an MT I could be trained to do things other than transcription, but that can be done remotely. I just keep wondering if continuing to work for an MT service will just mean less and less transcription to do and thus a stiff competition for work OR if there will be other duties we can be trained for or be training for now that will make us still useful in the EMR.

Hmmmmm.
I think a lot of it will depend on whether you - are a clinic mt or an acute

care MT to how much EMR will affect you. The office I work for (not as a transcriptionist) is changing to EMR before the end of the year, and the in-office employees will be doing everything. I can't think of anything that could be done remotely. There is a nice stimulus that is being offered for those who take Medicare and/or Medicaid, so I think this is going to cause an increase in doctor's buying into the systems as they will be penalized eventually if they don't.

If you work hospital, you probably have more chance of getting to be involved in the medical record things but can't imagine you would get to do that remotely.

HOSTILE Work Environment -- MUST Read !! (sm)
Mar 03, 2010

There’s just a handful of ways in which you can define hostile work environment. Any act of sexual harassment on the part of bosses or co-workers can be viewed as hostile. Any act or remarks that are overtly discriminatory regarding age, race, gender, sexual orientation, or disability are also considered to create a hostile work environment. The other way a hostile work environment may be defined is when a boss or manager begins to engage in a manner designed to make you quit in retaliati ...

Wondering About Pay
Dec 14, 2009

I work as an MT in a very rural area, so the pay is VERY good for me.  We are a one income household since my husband got laid off and I easily pay the mortgage, car payments, all of the bills, etc.  I was wondering, if a person lives in a much more expensive area, like California where a person's mortgage would easily be four times mine, do they get more money per line to compensate for that, or is it the same? ...

I Was Wondering About Something.
Jan 25, 2012

As an in-house MT we were required to wear business casual clothing.  Another job required scrubs.  Now that I work from home, I wear pJs, sweats, jeans, shorts, whatever.   I noticed that when I am "dressed" (not in pj's or sweats) that I seem to be more productive and I was wondering if others have noticed the same thing.  Sometimes I wonder if the way we dress to transcribe affects our productivity as a professional employee.  You know when you dress up to go ou ...

Jan 28, 2012

Who are they going to blame once they switch over to the EMR and there are a million mistakes on the chart?  They won't have the MTs to blame any more, so I wonder, who will it be???  Maybe the "scribe" or the med student who has to follow the docs around because they will be too lazy to type a few things into the computer?  Just wondering----. ...

Wondering About Something, With So Many Of Us
May 28, 2013

I wonder that most of us seem to be in the mid-40s and even later 50s or 60s that are sick of the MT garbage and want to get out by going back to school. Has anyone considered the fact of how old you/we will be when we graduate a program? Even a 1-year program likely will take 2 years to go through if somone has to work full-time to support themselves, even with loans to pay for school. What about the age discrimination I hear so much of and definitely see it in the real world? Does ...

Wondering
Mar 05, 2015

Okay, I have to wonder if it costs so much to train an MT for a company that they would not work with their MTs to keep them happy in the work types and specialties they do. Most times instead if you are not happy with your accounts, they just fire you. Doesn't anyone work with anyone so it benefits the MT and the company both? I find it so maddening that someone just hired can do this without even discussing it with the MT at all. Just fire them because they wanted to try another sp ...
