Has anyone heard anything about typing closed captioning - Hanging On

Posted: Aug 29, 2014

Would that maybe be an option for those of us in need for work? That's not something I'd think would be going away and I remember hearing years ago that the pay was better than MT.  Though what's happened to that field in the years since, I have no clue.  I just can't imagine that every being outsourced.

My organization produces huge volumes of training and other video presentations, like patient education. Enough to fill 4 or 5 channels 24 hours a day. All of it is closed-captioned, live, because we have a lot of deaf employees and hearing-impaired patients. Every bit of it is done automatically by SR. It's just fine, too. No editing is done.

Lots of Errors - Meh

I was watching a TV program the other day and it had closed captioning and had some unbelievable errors, like the person who typed it must be almost illiterate. But maybe because TV show was done by SR?

I sometimes turn on closed captioning just for a laugh... - Kiki

At first I thought, is the person typing this even listening to the show? It's always so blatantly and ridiculously INCORRECT...so much so that it is hilarious to watch and read what CC puts out. Now I realize that it's just unedited SR. I feel bad for deaf people who have to read this crap...they will have no idea what the show is really about.

We have our phone service through Vonage, and we have elected the option to have our voice mail also sent to us via e-mail in a speech-"recognized" typed message, as my husband is profoundly deaf and cannot hear the voice messages. I would say 90% of those messages are pretty much gibberish, and the other 10% have enough accurate words that that we can kind of make out the general topic of the message.

MT To Closed Captioning?
Jul 27, 2010

I have been doing some research on closed captioning and CART jobs/career. I searched the archives here, also. Does anyone know, however, if one needs to be a court reporter in order to learn the above jobs?  I'm wondering if one can learn stenography, etc., in some type of program without going through the entire curriculum of court reporting. Thanks! ...

Closed Captioning
Mar 29, 2015

Hey all, just a thought - if you're all tired of these transcription companies, it seems that closed captioning/court reporting out of your home is the way to go. I recently checked into this and it is very lucrative and you don't have to deal with outsourcing, low pay, all the "fun stuff" that medical transcription has to NOT offer. And, if you have a medical background, you get paid more as we are in high demand and would mean more pay. Again, just a thought and am definitely excited ...

Closed-captioning With Speech-recognition
Jul 11, 2012

Hey guys, the other day I tested a software program called VoxcribeCC, it works well on videos. If you do closed captioning or subtitling, it really eases the task with its speech recognition and time stamping functions. Accuracy is pretty high. I think it is way more powerful than dragon  ...

Typing A Physiatry Clinic Notes - Has Anyone Ever Heard Simvastating
Feb 12, 2015

The doctor says the patient is simvastatin 300 mg, metformin 1000 mg b.i.d., glimepiride 2 mg b.i.d., multivitamin, and calcium.  The patient has myofascial neck and shoulder pain and is diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I have never heard of simvastatin given at 300 mg, but was wondering if maybe this is some sort of alternative use for fibromyalgia or whatever.  Anyone?  I reference the only other note that this patient has and it lists simvastatin 300 mg as well, but I'm ...

Captioning
May 30, 2012

I have an opportunity for a position and am being required to do a quiz on captioning. Now, while I know what this is, I haven't a clue as to how to do it! They've basically given me a paragraph and are asking me to break it up for captioning. I'm clueless on this! Can anyone help? I'm a newbie and would like a chance at this position...  Thanks in advance! ...

Since The Window To Request Thanksgiving Has Closed
Oct 22, 2014

and the window to request Christmas is about to open, and the new rule our "scheduler" made up is that we can only take one of them, it would be nice if she would PROCESS THE THANKSGIVING REQUESTS SO WE KNOW IF WE CAN REQUEST CHRISTMAS OR NOT.    On a side note, since we can only take one of them, I suspect because she thinks it will make her job easier, that's going to throw way too many people working on completely dead holidays, which will lead to her having to fill out a ton ...

I Wonder If AHDI Could Be Closed And Reopened Structured As A Union
Sep 12, 2012

It would only work if we kept the skeleton of the organization, throughout anyone in any position of authority who has ever gone overseas or been part of sending work overseas. They would not be eligible to serve in any capacity. We would benefit from the albeit small membership still there and could build from that point. In a union, the members are the boss. If the leaders don't act in our interests, they will be gone. Why wouldn't that work? I think it would be too difficult to st ...

Getting References Is Hard When All The MTSOs I Worked For Are Closed
Mar 25, 2013

So I'm applying for a substitute position with my local school system and they want two professional references.  I don't want to ask the current MTSO I work for, nor the physicians in my private accounts.  I've worked for this MTSO for 5 years, a pretty significant length of time considering.  So I'm looking at my resume over the last 10 years and there are five companies closed/bought out. I have been in contact with a company I worked for from 1997 to 2003 ...

"Star" Closed

I have never heard of "star" closing anything! Any suggestions would be appreciated. :) ...

Typing Without QA
Apr 06, 2010

You know, I think I am typing better and faster without the fear of QA hanging over me.  I never thought they were extremely helpful anyways.  Usually they couldn't fill in the blanks and just nit-picked the report like a pecking bird.  I have never had a report sent back from a client (knock on wood) because they were unhappy with anything.  I spent far more time trying to please QA than the hospitals and doctors (and have told my supervisor that more than once).  ...

Typing Into EMR
Mar 20, 2012

For those of you who are typing directly into EMR/EHRs, how are you accessing the voice files? Is it coming directly from the EMRs or do you have to grab them separately. I've been asked to type directly into an office's EMR and am curious how this is going to work. It sounds like some are charging per audio minute and others per hour. I'm trying to keep my job relevant and go with the flow. Thanks to all who post their situations. At least we can all pull together, learn and keep ...
