A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
It is my opinion that transcription, whether it be standard or voice, will be replaced altogether in the very near future. There may be some little independent offices or hospitals that continue, but not for long. I say this for 2 reasons. One is that the hospital I worked for locally started withe EHR about 5 years ago and the introduction of VR about 3 years ago with the push for the doctors to do their own "point & click" type of transcription. The software made a medical record based on what they entered while still in the room with the patient. The hospital laid off half of it's 90+ MTs and is in the process of laying off about half of the 40+ still left. This is a huge hospital with many satellite clinics and smaller hospitals under them. Secondly, I took a course in implementing the electronic medical record and in this it speaks of the goal of the EHR to totally eliminate the transcriptionist and the coders. I didn't think, 10 years ago or even 8 years ago that I would see the demise of the transcriptionists with voice for years and years, but it has come a long way and so I can assume it will only improve. I'm sure the positions for MTs will morph into something other than editors, but not everyone will be able to morph into those positions. If people can get by with such a limited income, especially if they are stay-at-home moms or to supplement your income, then ride it to the end. I was thankful that in this economy I had any kind of income, and thankful for the transcription income, but I was lucky to find a job at a nearby hospital and hopefully can say good-bye forever to the transcription world. The rate of pay in transcription per line is the same as when I first got into this field 10 years ago and they want a lot more lines for that same pay. It doesn't get much better regardless of which company you work for. Most companies are lousy, but with different degrees of lousy. We all have different experiences working for the exact same company, but in the end, the pay sucks, the incentives suck (if there are any), lousy benefits with limited time off. They push for more and more, and we all know that more and more means more mistakes on your part and out goes the quality, which in turn affects your paycheck. Any seasoned MT knows the game, but for any of you newbies out there, I would seriously encourage you to find another career if you are able to because transcription is a dead-end job.
It always amazes me how vicious some of you people can be. I was reflecting on what I see is happening to this field and you have to be nasty. I wasn't attacking anyone, so why the name calling? Yes, this job will morph into something else, and I believe I stated that, but it's not a viable career and anyone new coming into this field should think twice.
I don't know what planet that you live on where you make $60,000, but if you do...good for you! Most of the MTs are lucky to get $20,000. I am an excellent MT and when I gave notice to take a local job I was told "my shoes would be hard to fill and the door would always be open to come back." I am certailnly NOT the dregs of transcription, but someone who wants more than the crumbs that these companies are offering. I have never had a problem finding MT work...it's finding the work to GET OUT of transcription that has been hard with the economy.
You have the right to disagree with me and say how wonderfully happy you are and you make wonderful money and kudos to you...but I don't understand the mentality of someone who responds in your manner calling me and those that want to get out of this field because of the writing on the wall and poor pay names. You are a pretty small and petty person I think and any of the others who responded in like manner.
I am sure a lot of you have wonderful jobs, but it is the exception and not the rule, so don't crap on those that haven't found that in their experience. I used to work with some transcriptionists who thought they were marvelous too...spouting off how many lines they got, but when you knew that they were getting all templated work or the same doctors day in and day out who said exactly the same thing so they could macro their own templates and weren't truely transcribing at all, but inserting templates, that was a whole different story. There is no way that you or anyone else make $60 or $40 thousand a year without working in templates or are paid a high hourly rate and not by the line. You are not making that kind of money at 4 cents a line.
As I stated...some of the MT jobs will morph into other things...but to what??? I mean seriously...they are working diligently to take the MT totally out of the picture...and they will eventually and faster than you think and the owners of these companies are greedy and don't want to share the wealth. If I want to work for peanuts and have them hammer away at my $/line and up and up the line count, then I would stay in this industry. The money and the stress level just isn't worth it.
