For a school paper: What are hospitals paying for in-house MTs currently? sm - no bashers please

Posted: Jun 28, 2013

I have to compare 20 or more hospitals in different parts of the country. I only need the state, not the city or name of the hospital. I am supposed to list the hourly rate and if there is an incentive plan. I know that these jobs are getting more and more rare, and I know that I probably won't be able to get one, but I really want to get a good grade on this paper, and I don't know where else to ask. Thank you in advance.

in house in New Mexico - sm

$17.45 an hour which is the mid point of the hourly range that is offered. There is a nighttime differential of $1.00 more an hour for hours worked from 8 pm on and an 80 cent per hour additional differential for weekends.

We have an incentive. We are required to produce 200 lph and incentive starts at 250 lph. There are tiers that go above that and quite frankly, I can't remember what the tiers are. I've made as much as $179 and as little as $34 when I was having a bad couple of weeks.

Salary survey - Curious

[ In Reply To ..]
But, what school needs to know someone's salary? People need to get it into their heads that salary information is confidential information. If your school needs to know that, have them conduct their own survey. I guarantee that the employers they contact will not divulge that information.

That's probably why - the school

[ In Reply To ..]
has devised an assignment that involves having the students approach MTs directly to get that information.

If I were the student, I'd be inquiring into the school's agenda in seeking information it should be getting through other channels.

Perhaps its a paper she is writing for school not "a" school? - nm

What is the difference between "school" and "a school?" I'm still not disclosing any salary information.
The difference is... - sm

If she is going to school and was given an assignment to write on a subject and she chose this as her subject. Not that she is going to an MT school and they are asking their students to get the dirty on what wages are out there.
The two - are not
[ In Reply To ..]
mutually exclusive.

It is a pointless exercise and people are justifiably suspicious of the agenda behind it.
That's right. You can never be too careful. - nm

I dont understand the paranoia about stating a wage - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Honestly, I don't. They aren't asking for your name or info, not the address or specific place you work. Even if they were asking what institution, who cares? I mean, really? It's just a number for crying out loud. Some of you are so paranoid - I put all of my info out there in the public. Google my name and you know exactly where I live, exact address and most likely directions with it. My phone number is on my Facebook. No one is going to come and take your job or find out anything personal about you because you stated a wage. I shake my head so much at the paranoia here on this site I feel like I've developed a tic LOL. Wow, just wow.
It's not paranoia - Victim of identity theft
[ In Reply To ..]
It's prudence, and you would do well to re-think this.
LOL you gotta be kidding! Identify theft by stating a wage - good grief! HAHAHAHA
[ In Reply To ..]
I've heard it all now. I think some of you need to brush up on how identity theft occurs - it's not because you share a wage and a city on this site - there is absolutely NO WAY they can get any personal info on you from you sharing that NONE!
for me, it's personal info and not for public use. - laugh if you want. maxine

The OP could have acquired the information she needed through standard research methods, but that would have taken some thought and effort. So, she took what she thought was the easy way out by having a random group of strangers do her work for her.

Explanation for student that is not bashing and suggests a solution - Old Educator

[ In Reply To ..]
The problem with your request is that it seems impossible. In other words, it doesn't make sense that a school would expect you to collect this information from 20 hospitals in different parts of the country. That is because you have no way to identify hospitals that have in-house MTs, and even if you did, they are not going to discuss it with you.

So, it may be that you misunderstood the assignment. If the school says you only need to list the state, but not the hospital name or city, they are likely to be looking for STATE averages, not hospitals.

And, if you are not required to list your sources on that paper, that is a kind of academic problem. Reputable educators will expect to see where you got your information. They require references.

Here are some suggestions for different ways to do this. First make sure you understand the assignment.

1. Explain the problem to your instructor and renegotiate the assignment. Ask to use state data.

2. Or, don't discuss with the instructor, but just use state data anyway. Explain where you got it and why you used it.

3. Or, do an internet search for job ads. Some give salaries. Surely you can find more to add to the one here.

State averages are easily located with a google search. I just googled "salaries medical transcription" and got exactly what you need. In the top 4 choices, too.

You may see this paper as a paper, but your school thinks it is a vehicle for you to learn some job-related skills in internet research.

You'll need to google this yourself, but I 'll start you out. This website has all you need. If you can't read the data, try because that is part of the learning experience. This website even has it on maps.

http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes319094.htm

The next several links in my search were for sites that aggregate job ads. You can look there to find 20 ads. You can also get regional data. This is one of them:

http://www.indeed.com/salary/Medical-Transcriptionist.html

That one is particularly interesting because it shows a precipitous decline in MT salaries over the last year.

There, I just gave you everything you need to do your paper.

What a great answer - and how kind of you to take the time to reply in such a thorough way. I'll be you were an outstanding educator - the world could use more of you!

Hmmm, sounds fishy - just saying

[ In Reply To ..]
Even if this is (somehow) a legit assignment, you should be doing the research in a more direct manner if you "want to get a good grade..."

Fishy - Curious

[ In Reply To ..]
That is why I would not provide information and pointed out that salaries are confidential; this could be anyone trying to garner information, we really do not know if this is a student. The comment about not knowing if they could "get a job like that" seemed a little suspect to me.

Second, wasn't there a rule on this forum in regard to students seeking homework assignment help?

Third, a good MT needs to know how to do research instead of taking the easy way out. I did not mean to bash anyone, but something does not seem right about the OP's question.

OP did not identify him/ herself as an MT student. Could be any HIM-related - coursework. NM

Not fishy at all -- typical HIM assignment - A scavenger hunt assignment

[ In Reply To ..]
This is a typical HIM program assignment. HIM programs like to have students do things like look up salaries, collect job descriptions, and find out information about medical record departments like number of records, services provided, and staffing levels. This is partly to give them experience in locating information (a job-related skill) and partly to get them interacting with potential employers in their local area.

I once had to visit a hospital, nursing home, rehab facility, large clinic, doctor office, lab, radiology center, and hospice to interview the HIM director and ask about 20 questions ranging from what their facility did to how many records they had. The local community college HIT program had been flooding the area with similar assignments for years and those HIM directors were sick of it.. It was so difficult to find willing interviewees that I ended up covering several of them at my own job. Of the rest, only one person agreed to talk to me. The rest just left a handout for me at the front desk.

Since this person's assignment requires collection of numbers, it might be for a statistics or business type class.

The suspicion that this is an MT school trying to get insider information on salaries is unfounded. In fact, it is very easy to get salary information from the internet. Schools do need that kind of information, but need to get it from reliable sources, like the federal government, to avoid accusations of misrepresentation.

I'm in the Midwest and the hospitals around here start about 16.00 - I've been with my current place 7 years and am just under 22.00 right now.

I Found Out What Hospitals Are Actually Paying Nuance Per Line
May 20, 2015

Recently found out that two Chicagoland hospitals who outsourced to Nuance are paying them a whopping 15 to 15.5 cents per line for VR.  With this being an almost virtual world now and very little overhead, it is a terrible injustice for Nuance to pay their MTs only a fraction/peanuts of what they are getting paid.  While Nuance owners are laughing all the way to the bank, it is time for every Nuance MT to formulate a "get out of jail/Nuance" plan ASAP. I was told ...
