Why don't hospitals . . . - nm

. . . and larger medical facilities hire disenfranchised MLS to dictate their doctors notes instead of sleep deprived nurses and residents who can't put 2 words together??? I'm not saying all RNs and residents dictate poorly, but in my experience a huge proportion leave a lot to be desired.

What with the doctor and nurse shortage, doesn't it make sense to utilize the MLS' command of medical language? It would free up the nurses for nursing, the doctors for doctoring, and and residents for residence, thereby sparing them the tiresome chore of dicatation. Everybody wins! What a concept!!!

But of course it won't happen. Makes too much sense.

That's a great idea. You should look into developing that as a business I'm sure where there is a will there is a way.

The keyword there is "hire". Hospitals don't - want to pay people to do things -

Actually, I was thinking of direct hire for MLS-turned-dictators; i.e., no middleman in terms of a contractor to secure the work for MLS. That just takes more money out of the MLS pocket.

But you're right; the hospitals want to reduce staff and the insurance, workmen's comp expense, etc. that go with living, breathing human beings. Those human beings are so much trouble!

It has nothing to do with being cheap. Hospitals simply are not responsible for it ... the doctors are. If you want to dictate for doctors, find some and get THEM to hire you to do it for them.

Doctors would probably be doing it, and I know some do, except that few MTs would be able to do an adequate job. Sounds easy when you listen to it, but they are reading many pages of material, labs, imaging, and things like EKGs and putting it together.

There are job ads here all the time from one group that wants to hire MTs to do summaries. If you think it is so easy, apply.

I personally do not think it is a good idea to hire MTs to do the docs dictation. The doctor usually is the one who has personally seen the patient, ordered all the tests that the patient had, knows more about the medical condition, was present when assessing the patient. No, I do not think it would be a good idea. MTs can be a scribe and follow around the doctor while he sees patients in the ER or something like that.

I've been an IC for almost ten years, and just found out that the hospitals I work for are going to be outsourced to Nuance. It probably won't happen for a while - they're are still in the very beginnings of transition. When it happens we will be given the option of staying on as employees of Nuance. My friend works for a local hospital that I used to work for. That institution just recently outsourced their MT department to Nuance. The hospital has hired a "Life Coach" to direct their "Learning and Development" department. They have announced that the L&D section will be "massively expanding" in the near future. Their mission is to come up with new worthless slogans (like they one they had in place when I worked there) to put on posters plastered all over the hospital ...

We just lost one of the most respected hospitals in the country to EPIC. I have a phobia about working on disreputable accounts -- the kind that hire non-English-speaking physicians who prey on old, senile, demented individuals and do consult after consult after consult. Some (all?) of the hospitals are very demand and critical, so its impossible to believe they want their work to go to India. MQ is screwing up royally with their software for the MT's so I can imagine it is just as bad for the hospitals. Another poster below mentioned that her hospital hired its own MTs, stopped outsourcing work. It seems like most of these jobs are in-house, but I was happy to read that her hospital had all its MTs working at home. How I wish I could find a job like that! If HIPPA is as important as we are told.... and India does not have to abide by HIPPA,... what is to keep us from finding out if our own personal doctors and hospital off-shores there transcription to India, such as via M*Modal. If so, then could we sue our hospital for not making sure that our own personal information is not secure. If enough Americans start doing this.....it could possibly change our MT jobs.
