FYI - "Transcribers" - KAT

Posted: Apr 25, 2012

I dont know about you, but I am tired of being called a "transcriber."  I am a  transcriptionist..........  A transcriber is a tool or machine used for transcribing.  I'm not a typist either.

probably just an editor - dont sweat small stuff

Id rather be a transcriber than an editor any day!

Just an FYI - SM

We actually are "transcribers"

Quick definitions from WordNet (transcriber)

ΓΆ–ΒΈ noun: someone who makes a written version of spoken material
ΓΆ–ΒΈ noun: someone who represents the sounds of speech in phonetic notation
ΓΆ–ΒΈ noun: someone who rewrites in a different script
ΓΆ–ΒΈ noun: a person who translates written messages from one language to another
ΓΆ–ΒΈ noun: a musician who adapts a composition for particular voices or instruments or for another style of performance

I am a typist, transcriber, transcriptionist - one label makes you no - better than another -sm

Honestly, does the label or title make the outcome your job any different? Is it just a "status" thing? When people ask me what I do for a living, I usually say I'm a typist because that's what I am and typing is what I do :)

Ditto. They can call me a "meat popsicle" for all I care... - Hayseed

As long as I am getting paid what I feel I am worth and treated halfway decent, it's all good by me. My gosh, folks sure can get uptight 'round these parts about the oddest things.

Transcriber - Old MT

As far as transcriber, it's just plain incorrect. That's like saying we're a tape recorder. As far as typist, I don't care, but I'm not a snot about that one, I DO type, so I'm a typist to a degree. Typist isn't completely incorrect.

You are not a transcriber - JW

[ In Reply To ..]
You are a transcriber only if you have mechanical parts and play a tape. You are a transcriptionist, MT, medical language specialist etc. LOL!!! Have a good day.
I am a keypuncher myself. - anon

can't believe people are trying to make this a debate. LOL

it is what it is only to you, and the rest does not matter because it changes nothing. there. I 'bated.
this reply is so informative - usta

I can see which MTs are willing to DO THE JOB and get paid no matter what they are called, and those who can't find/keep work who want to insist they are a TRANSCRIPTIONIST. Lawdy, lawdy.

I don't get it. Call me whatever you want to and then PAY ME. Thankfully, my clients feel that way and happily pay me and call me GREAT!
Are you special then!! - Kat

So I guess what you are saying is that since you will accept being called anything, that is why you are employed??? I'm employed too....but do not want to be called a machine's name. What does that have to do with anything?

oh for gawds sake - seriously?

[ In Reply To ..]
What do you do?

You transcribe, right?

Ergo, you *ARE* a transcriber.

Seriously, some MTs need to so get over themselves with this kind of stuff.

As long as I'm being paid, does it really, I mean come on, REALLY matter if someone says I'm a transcriber? Heck no!

Prefer transcribist myself. - sm

I prefer the title of "Keyboard Goddess" - The Keyboard Goddess

[ In Reply To ..]
JK...I seriously don't give a whit with which title an MTSO would like to bestow upon me, provided they treat me with a little respect, pay me a fair wage, pay me on time, and give me as good as I give them.

yes, and "keyboard jockey" - NM

And IMO it's the difference between a professional and someone who is a glorified typist that doesn't realize how insulting it is to be called a tape recorder.

I don't mind being called a transcriber - Mountain MT

In this day and age, I am just happy to be employed... so many people I know are not. Life's too short for me to be bothered with labels. Labels are for soup cans. They can call me typist, transcriptionist, transcriber, whatever. If they call me anything other than "transcriptionist", it only refers to THEIR ignorance and is no reflection on me, my skills, or what I do for a living.

Transcriber with moving parts - JW

[ In Reply To ..]
I bet you have some moving parts when you are transcribing, so guess you qualify to be called a transcriber but doesn medical language specialist sound intriguing?

Good one! - lol

[ In Reply To ..]
but the medical language specialist is too hoity-toity for me!

Some people need to look up the word - transcriber (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
we are indeed "transcribers" but in all actually I don't see what the big deal is except to give everyone reading this entire thread a laugh for the day.
