Does anyone do law enforcement transcription? - Backwards Typist

Posted: Sep 08, 2010

I am looking into this as a PT position since I love anything to do with criminal justice (but when younger was off limits to women) and have lots of questions.  I'd like to ease out of full time MT'g and into part time work; i.e., slow down a bit in my 'golden years .'  Would someone be so kind to answer the following questions?

1.  Is the pay rate acceptable? Do you get paid by minutes, lines, or words?

2.  How many reports/minutes can you, or do you get sent to you, in a day? How long are those reports and did it take long to 'get the hang of it'?

3.  Are they a mix of different sound files? What program is the best for this type of work?

4.  What foot pedal do you use?

5.  Do I pay for the background check? How long does it take after sending the background check does it take to get set up from the company and ready for the job and do I have to pay for it?

6.  Is the work fairly constant?

I have so many more. Please feel free to email me privately if you don't wish to post the info on the board.  I have received a reply from a company and don't know yet if I should proceed with this company or not for a reason I would not care to divulge at this time.

Thanks in advance.

You could ask the questions on the Transcription Essentials board ... - sm

... they're a message board with a primary focus on general transcription. I know there are a few people who do law enforcement transcription there. Some may even contract with the company that you're considering. I don't know if links are allowed here, but just do a search for "Transcription Essentials," on Google. They'll pop up.

Thanks. I'll try it. (nm) - Backwards Typist

1. Pay rate is usually by the minute.

2. This has a lot to do with audio quality. A lot of times, it's pretty poor due to background noise, old recording equipment, hysterical people, telephone recordings, dialects, ethnicities, geographical accents, etc. A good rule of thumb with LE is 4:1. One hour of dictation = 4 hours to type, sometimes more if the audio quality is iffy; sometimes less if there is a lot of dead air.

3. Express Scribe or Start/Stop. Sometimes you have to type directly into the PD computer.

4. Whatever works with the above LOL.

5. Yes you pay for the background check - usually FBI. It depends on the company when they'll start you.

6. That also depends on the contract. The majority of companies do overflow work, as almost all PD's have in-house transcriptionists that do the bulk of the work.

It is difficult work, especially if you are sensitive. Lots of child molestation/abuse, elderly abuse, homicides - just horrible, horrible crimes are what you listen to. If I don't cry typing at least once a day, it's unusual.

Thanks you. Your answers have helped tremendously. - Backwards Typist

I'm not afraid of difficult work. I'm used to it from MT'g. I'm just not sure about a few things. I've always worked with internet-based MT programs, so this might take some time to get used to, but I hope being from former law enforcement family members may help a little.

Anyone Gone From MT To Law Enforcement/police Transcription?
Jan 20, 2010

If anyone has information, advice or other helpful links regarding transitioning from medical transcription to law enforcement/police transcription (or maybe even criminal justice?), I would be happy to receive it.  With MT job searches pretty much limited to mostly nationals, it is very difficult to find those smaller companies that value their employees, pay a decent rate (0.09+) and have consistent work. (Where does one find them?) ...

GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION
May 17, 2010

Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession.   I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India.   Now all that's left are transcription companies here in the U.S. that don't want to pay much more, lie to us and tamper with our line counts.   GET OUT, GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION! ...

A Day Without Transcription?
May 28, 2010

It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand. Impossible, I know, but I bet employers would sit up and take notice. ...

Don't work for this company.  They are extremely picky.  One person tells you to do it one way, another tells you differently.  They tell you to leave blanks for another to listen to (that's what we want!) but then complain that you are leaving blanks.  No one can hear some of the poor dictators and you need to leave a blank.  If you decide to try to fill in the blank, you are wrong too.  I am a very experienced transcriptionist to have been treated this p ...

SM Transcription...
Feb 28, 2011

PLEASE..do not be foolish enough to work for this company!!  They are offerring 3 cents for VR.  A seasoned MT well versed in voice recognition software, particularly Editscript, produced by eEscription out of Massachusetts, can make 500-600 lines per hour. At 3 cents a line that is slave wages. It will average you 12 cents a line on a good account.  I knew this would happen eventually.  I am making 4.5 cents on Editscript and making 28-30 an hour before my IC status. Do not ...
