I was looking for MT jobs in my state of FL.  I checked the salary info on 1 job.

The table below shows the estimated 2011 Employment Wage Statistics for individuals employed as Medical Transcriptionists in Brevard County.

I have 25+ years experience and I don't make $16/hour.  Last year w/out VR, I averaged that but not now.

salary - dont either

I don' make $11.46 and I am 38 years into this failing profession. Made $25 an hour in 2005. In a small town of 2000 can't find a job doing anything else that will pay anywhere close to that, and because my mortgage is $248 a month, I can't move to a larger city and rent a room for $248 a month. I am screwed and have 6 years to retirement.

Please see the enclosed OCCUPATIONAL OUTLOOK HANDBOOK - average clerical salaries. $16/hour is only @$32K

per year. As you can see, any literate high school grad (or drop-out) with a couple years' experience working up from general office can earn that.

Please also note that these are ENTRY LEVEL SALARIES for ENTRY LEVEL PEOPLE with no minimal experience and education.

In decades past when I compared my earnings as a skilled person in specialized clerical positions--working in an urban area--they were always significantly higher than these averages, which are, of course pulled down by lower-pay regions of the country. These are latest data, published 3/29/2012.

Wages - Fossil MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm in Miami-Dade -- having been looking for work even outside of MT and am amazed at what these salaries are. On top of that, 99.999% of the clerical jobs or any job for that matter, you have to be bilingual. I get a whopping $90 a week in UC, because most of my employment was more IC. Rented ROOMS here are going for $600-800 a month. I have been getting clerical job listings from the state and on average, seeing about $20-25K a year, even for administrative assistants.

We've noticed a lot of poverty in Florida; it's been hit - hard for sure. The trick in any field

[ In Reply To ..]
though is to pick a job that does pay what you want and start working TOWARD it. Not the job anyone off the street can get, the good-paying one you don't qualify for yet. I did that in publishing as a single in my early 20s, in insurance a lot closer to home as a mom in my mid 20s, and a few years later as an appraiser as a mom of a sick child having to have a job with a flexible schedule. I did it all over again, training to work temporarily :)! in this field when the real estate market in California crashed, but I stayed with it when we decided we wanted to move to the country and this would enable that.

Here's how: All fields but this one (and we all know what this takes) required my taking a position as an assistant to the person holding the well-paying I wanted, taking the required classes, studying for the required licenses, investing the required time getting the required experience, and then actually getting the jobs--In my case all requiring giving notice and moving to another company. Nothing ever quick or easy.

It is harder these days, but the route I took is still very standard and is still and always doable. Lots and lots and lots of people have good jobs; every one of them had to train themselves to be qualified for them. The trick is to identify a well-paying you can be good at (and hopefully enjoy doing), and then go do what you have to to get it.

Anyone can do that. Unless, of course, there's a special problem, such as caring for a pair of demented parents, or maybe just getting old, with chronic illness threatening to sabotage the kind of challenges taken on cheerfully in years past.

One guess how I understand others in that situation or that one might need to settle for taking on a less demanding challenge. BTW, researching jobs and social programs in more generous and less expensive geographic areas might be worthwhile. Some areas have labor shortages. If we had to move for me to get a job to support us, we would.

Brevard County Resident - Experienced MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been a resident of Brevard County for about 25 years, and I started out at well below what I was making in Virginia at that time. I went from $12 dollars per hour to $8 dollars per hour and since then the highest I have made in this field has been about $12 dollars per hour now. I have never ever know of one MT that actually makes $16 per hour and it is more like $10. I would love to know where anyone is making that kind of money in the MT field, unless they are in a hospital setting, and even then it is not that high, or working for a private doctor's office. Most of the physicians in the Melbourne/Palm Bay area are affiliates now of Wuesthoff Hospital, Holmes Regional, or Palm Bay Hospital and they are employees of these hospitals and are paid according to the hospital scale of pay, which is not that high. When I went to work after leaving Wuesthoff because our work was outsourced overseas I worked for several MT companies, and it was not that bad 10 to 15 years ago, but when they did outsource and our work went out of the country then everything took a nosedive to one-half of what I had been making, and it has been bad ever since. I don't think it will ever come back up, and particularly not in this county.

Before remote hiring, many richer regions paid a lot - more than others. Since, the low pay

[ In Reply To ..]
rates of other areas were matched by most employers because they could hire from those areas. Nevertheless, there are many, many thousands of employers, and they didn't all move as one to pay the least possible.

Plus, our current survival of the fittest, winners deserve to win, and losers deserve to lose business/political climate has required some time to subvert everyone from the relative decency we had before. Even then it failed for many who are holding out as much as they can and still survive.

What would each of US do if we'd

1. Had 8 employees for 15 years, none less than 5 years, some original;
2. Had been cutting our own profits/income for years now to hold onto clients who wanted to pay less; and
3. Knew we could make more money (3rd child ready for college) and hold onto another client we're in danger of losing if we replaced all our 12-14 cpl employees with 12 new remotes at 7 cpl?

Florida salaries are pitiful! I started my first MT job in Californina, right out of school and was paid $10.00 an hour. Moved to Florida in 1994, and was bumped down to $8.00 an hour! Since then I have not been able to get past $13.00 an hour. I have seen other job listings for MTs in other states, they pay much higher. Saw one awhile back that was paying $20.00 an hour. Made me sick. If I was not married, I think I would move elsewhere!

We purchased a little vacation MH in a park where relatives - and friends live, and it is a fun and

[ In Reply To ..]
well maintained getaway in its little Snowbirds' trailer-park-on-the-water way, but I have been dismayed by most of what we see when driving just a couple of miles inland. We know little of Florida, having only been down there a few times now, so these posts add to the impression that most of Florida really is hurting and has been shabbily managed for a long time. That said, when we get away from the clog grown up along the interstates and are able to see an older, quieter...unspoiled Florida we are glad to be there. I like the swamps, too. :)

The pay in our county is low for everyone. Just saw an add for a secretary for $10 an hour, forklift operator for $11 an hour.

My husband's friend who is a construction supervisor was only making $12 an hour.

Just wow. What you guys are describing is really - harsh. Best wishes. NM

Informatics Salary Versus Coder Salary
Jan 15, 2013

Hello Everybody.  First, let me say I have gotten a lot of good advice from this board in the past few years.  I have been encouraged to go back to school, am currently enrolled in Andrews for coding, and am looking to the future to obtain a degree to further advance myself in the field. I am very strongly considering WGU's Informatics course. I think this will be a good fit for me, especially considering this program also includes many IT certifications and I have always been ...

I found this very interesting in regard to a study done that shows the American worker has no idea the disparity between his salary and his CEO's salary.  This is from the The Boston Globe on 04/28/2014:What does it take to become the most overpaid executive in Massachusetts? Or, more to the point, how much does it take? The answer is a little bit north of $29 million. That’s how much the Burlington speech recognition company Nuance Communications Inc. paid its chief executive, Paul ...

Salary At Early 1990s Level
Jul 18, 2010

I have been with my current company for a number of years, but due to a number of changes that have been instituted in just the last few years, I have realized about a 37% reduction in income, at the same time that I am considered "one of their best," and am back to my income level of the early 1990s.  I see foreclosure looming.  That VR/SR has become the majority of the work is the largest factor in this drop.  Are there MTs who are working for companies with little or no VR ...
