I am not trying to sound discouraging, but when do I get this supposed 34,020 salary that it says on BLS website MTs are suppose to make. I graduated from my training in 2009 and have worked for 2 companies, niether of which has offered me anything close to that, and where do they get the $16.34 per hour figure from anyway?

Back in 2002-2004, I was averaging 42,000 per year (production pay only) in a 40-hr work week. I haven't seen those numbers since.

They're either using old numbers or they're lumping other medical field salaries in there, like management credentials and things.

Two years ago (before I was laid off from a hospital) was the last time I made over $40K and over $20/hour. Those days are gone, sorry to say. Working for 4 cents a line (or less, which was my case) and constantly being out of work, it was impossible to make anywhere near $16/hour.

I was making $58,000 a year easily and not even doing 40 hours/week. Lines per hour were over 300 - $36/hour.....I curse Transcend for their conniving ways that sold the former owner on the fact that they were going to keep things the same or whatever promises they made....once the merger took place and they tried to cut the pay of the 3 of us who were the highest-paid cos we were the "do it all" people - I quit. End of story.

I make 34,000 a year at a local hospital doing transcription i.e. 15.86 an hour. I have 15 years exp. The outsourcing companies rip MTs off and expect them to be available to them at all times and have no life outside of working for them. I worked at home for ten years and it was feast or famine, was a single mom and was always in a crisis, never had enough money for bills for my paychecks were based on work availability and the accounts were usually always overstaffed so I was faced with low work and out of work situations constantly. This field has sadly gone to the dogs as far as outsourcing companies are concerned. They treat MTs like slaves.

As long as MTs are willing to work for 4 to 6 to 8 cents a 65-character line(and India is still so-called transcribing), it will never happen. You need at least 11 cents a 65-character line and to work 12 hour days,6 days a week to get $50,000 a year. Not only did they make the lines LONGER but they only pay 4 cents to 6 cents a line and most people are willing to work for this just to have a job. This is a dying profession. I am just blessed that, due to 30 years in the workforce, I can make 11 cents a line self-employed, working for several different offices, and, if you have steady work and good dictators, then you can make more money per year IF you are willing to sit there and put the hours in, but it all depends on the formula. Therefore, they are not telling a lie when they SAY you can make that much - that is the SCAM. Plus, it is impossible to ask for a raise now-a-days due to all of the above. I just lost a $16,000 a year part-time account because a Doc I typed for 30 years went to EMR and computerized crap (mandated by Obama care by 1/2014) with Dragon Speaking and long before that India started transcribing for Sentara (in Virginia), which was the start of the downfall many, many moons ago. India left at least 3 to 10 blanks per report for the Hospitals and they did not give a crap, and I never left a blank. Also, on top of all that, the Accountants will AX Transcription before they CUT anything else when trying to cut the payroll. So that is why you don't hear any of us dinosaurs complaining, because we know the score - just Happy to be Working :)

EMR was NOT mandated by Obamacare.

It was part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

I work for a hospital and do production based work. My hourly rate varies every 8 weeks based on the 8 week production rate. I make between 20 and 28 per hour. I have worked for other companies and never made over 17. You need to check with hospitals.

I am trying to find a good training program. I have looked into career step and then a local training program at a technical program here in Denver. The Denver program has an internship as part of the course but is not ahdi approved. It is a 17 month program and looks thorough but I don't know how big the ahdi approval is. At Parkland Hospital the requirement to work as a Medical Transcriptionist is to have a certificate in medical transcription or at least one year of medical typing experience. I am updating my resume, and I am wondering if I should include Acute Care experience. I do multi-specialty clinic work and H&Ps, Discharge Summaries, Consults, etc. for various Veteran's Administration hospitals and clinics. I would like to say I do Acute Care on my resume to beef it up, but because it is for the Veteran's Administration, the Acute Care reports are usually for things typically related to older patients.
