Anyone want to discuss starting salary/wages? Need to know what to look for... - xoxo

Posted: May 04, 2010

I've been sending out resumes and cover letters as much as I can and reading lots of forums trying to get a feel for what to look for in a good company.

Can the experienced MTs share their knowledge/wisdom on what to look for in a new employer? What is a good starting rate? What are some questions to ask of a potential employer? What should we stear clear of? I've been reading the company boards and find that there seem to be more negative responses/comments on so many companies, the good ones seem far and few. Is that true??

Thanks for replying!

my opinion would be employee status is best, even if you don't require benefits. You will get PTO and no hassels with tax deductions. This should be doable and a decent starting wage. Despite what seems to be frequently posted, if you work hard and do well, you will get raises. However, this is only my personal experience. Good luck

This is what they are offering experienced MTs - with 20 and 30 years experience

So I think your figures are way too high as to what a new MT should expect to be offered.

Some MT companies are even only offering 3 cpl for editing, with many of them offering 4 cpl. So your 4.2 cpl is way too high when they won't even pay an experienced MT that much.

I graduated from an MT school last year. When I was looking for jobs, I was always told 6 cents per line. The 2 jobs I was offered gave me 6 cents per line. I see a lot of people here on MTStars say 7 or 8 cents, but I personally never ran into that.

The main thing I would look out for is a company that treats you like an employee but hires you as an IC. It's pretty bad. My OM was like that until about 2 weeks ago when something apparently changed, no idea what.

There will be a lot of negative responses about companies because, quite frankly, there are a lot of real jerks in QA. My OM is a pain in the hinder, and this would be a great job if it wasn't for her. I suspect almost every MT job has at least one person that drives everyone else insane.

Scribes - Starting Salary
Mar 30, 2010

I do medical transcription for a local specialty practice.  They are transitioning to EHR and gave notice to their MTs that they would be cutting back on their MT needs starting next week.  Today, the office mgr. called and asked if I would be interested in a Scribe position.  In short, I am.  The manager would like to learn my salary requirements.  I am thinking of asking to start at $10/hour.  Does that seem reasonable.  N.B. Idaho ranks 49/50 in per capita i ...

Question For Coders, What Is A Fair Starting Salary
May 21, 2014

I am so excited! I have an interview coming up in a few weeks and they wanted me to submit a salary requirement.  I am not credentialed yet, but hopefully will be this summer, and I don't have any on-the-job coding experience, but I have no idea what a fair starting salary requirement would be.  Help! :)  ...

Informatics Salary Versus Coder Salary
Jan 15, 2013

Hello Everybody.  First, let me say I have gotten a lot of good advice from this board in the past few years.  I have been encouraged to go back to school, am currently enrolled in Andrews for coding, and am looking to the future to obtain a degree to further advance myself in the field. I am very strongly considering WGU's Informatics course. I think this will be a good fit for me, especially considering this program also includes many IT certifications and I have always been ...

Ever Have A Manager 'discuss' Another MT To You
Sep 23, 2012

I don't really want to know what someone else did to screw up and find it inappropriate given her position, putting me in an awkward spot as it is not my business (I'm not management).  I just want, no need to get along with everyone and not develop bad feelings for either the rock or the hard place here.  Work is hard enough.  Why doesn't she just BE a manager and handle it privately without the smear job?     ...

Tried To Discuss This Today With A Non MT
Sep 11, 2013

She couldn't see what the big deal was about losing two days of PTO.  She said the company is just trying to save money.  She knows that I am now required to work 24 hours if necessary to get in my eight, but doesn't see the problem with that.  She says most people goof off half the day anyway, and when I explained that if I goof off, it means I am not making money, she didn't understand what I was saying.  And she thinks CEOs deserve to make $325,000 a year. ...

MT Wages
Dec 07, 2012

I want to congratulate everyone who posts on this site telling it like it is about the way these MT companies are destroying what once was a profession where you could make a decent living and actually enjoyed your job. I've been doing this for 30 years and I am still hanging on because I do not know what else to do at my age. I can barely pay my bills with what they are paying me and I am working full time. I am 68 years old and I really am not too excited about going back to school or sta ...

Wages?
Oct 31, 2013

I've taken the tests and have been offered a job with Nuance but want to know if the wage offered was the standard wage for Nuance.  I was offered 8 cpl for straight trasncription and 4 cpl for editing.  This would be for clinics only.  I've heard acute care paid more, but I've only ever had clinic experience.  Do they ever offer raises?  They mentioned a bonus program, and I've seen notes on here about people saying they have had problems getting th ...

AP - Wages
Jun 04, 2015

How many are aware of the wage disparity between different accounts (they don't find it necessary to tell us such a silly detail as the hourly wage, you have to look it up online).  With the new accounts, some pay quite low (as low as MB that no one wants to work on) and it may be a shock for those working on those accounts when they get their paychecks! Is it right of them to ask/require us to help out?  My feeling is  it is costing me to work on those accounts, as it lowers ...

Salary For Coders

Salary Question

I am currently making 42,000.00 a year in medical transcription.  Am I really going to make much more than that  if I get an AA degree in medical coding ?  I am wondering if school is a waste.  My daughter says that an entry level job for me will only pay in the 30's and if thats the case, I think I should stay with transcription.  I am 50 years old and just a bit scared of whats to come. ...

Nuance CEO Salary
Sep 25, 2014

I found this very interesting in regard to a study done that shows the American worker has no idea the disparity between his salary and his CEO's salary.  This is from the The Boston Globe on 04/28/2014:What does it take to become the most overpaid executive in Massachusetts? Or, more to the point, how much does it take? The answer is a little bit north of $29 million. That’s how much the Burlington speech recognition company Nuance Communications Inc. paid its chief executive, Paul ...

Where Your Lost MQ Wages Are Going

Fair Wages
Feb 18, 2011

I think a fair wage should be in relation to the economy, that which allows you to meet your baseline financial needs without having to work a second job or long hours.  I worked for a service back in the early 80s for 6.5 cents per line.  Today, nearly 30 years later, they're offering 7.5 cents per line, yet costs are sky-high.   It's pathetic.  It's sweatshop third world.  It's true, we're stuck with the way things are, but ...
