At a new job, can insurance company deny you because of - preexisting conditions? nm

In my state, if a person does not have continuous health coverage (COBRA or an individual policy) when they leave a job, there is a 9-month waiting period for preexisting conditions, which is supposed to change under Obama care. If you already have insurance of some kind and carry that over, there should not be a problem. If not, you will probably get health insurance at your new job, but there will might be a waiting period.

I don't think you are fully informed in your reply.

A bigger picture is that some of Obamacare has been implemented, including coverage for people with preexisting conditions.

The name of the program differs from state to state, which may be another reason for some things to be handled at the Federal level instead of advocating for states' rights in everything, but that is a debate for another time and another board.

What state are you in and I will see if I can find it for you or you can do an internet search yourself.

Coverage - I'm not the OP, but... - (see message)

...I just wanted to say that that is very nice of you to offer to check into this person's state info. :-)

And, just to add that I think you're right--I, too, believe I've heard or read that some of Obamacare has been implemented, and preexisting conditions are not supposed to block you from getting coverage now. I'm not 100% sure, but that sounds like something I've heard, too. The OP should definitely look into that.
Thanks, See! Volunteering as a toe in the water. And a list - of programs to know--extremely valuable info.NM

This is the information - I wanted to share with you
[ In Reply To ..]

It is from the healthcare.gov link that someone else shared.

And, regardless of your political perspective R/D/S/TP/L/G/AC, etc etc etc, read carefully what is now available to the increasingly impoverished MT workers, which was made available by Obamacare - not Romneycare.  Read and make very wise decisions with your vote!

Also, for those of you allergic to the idea of striking/unionizing/organizing - whatever you want to call it or not call it, let this be your example of how it can work.  We just organized without organizing to help each other.  My guess is more than 1 person reading this post is going to find the information very helpful.  Whether or not they want to give credit to the person who lead the effort for this to be available (Obama et al) is entirely another debate.

Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP)/High Risk Pool

The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) is a new program offered in every state under the Affordable Care Act. It can be administered by either states or the Federal government. The PCIP may be able to help you if you've been locked out of the insurance market while the nation transitions to 2014. In 2014, you will have access to affordable health insurance choices through a new organization in your state called an Exchange—a time when you can no longer be discriminated against based on a pre-existing condition.

I live in WA state and thought that I was going to be unemployed. I could not afford COBRA through my employer so was planning to purchase individual health insurance. I was told by an agent (who ought to know) that if I could not show proof of continuous coverage, there would be a 9-month waiting period for preexisting conditions when I did try to get health insurance. Apparently, it is not the same in every state. I may not be fully informed, but that was my very recent experience.

I am the OP and I thank you so much. I had to be gone last night - which is why this is my first response to you. SM

The story is my DH is wanting to look for another job. He is 58 1/2 and had a mild heart attack. We live in Illinois, he now works in Missouri, a new job could be in either state.

I am crazed that he even wants to look for another job. He says he is tired of closing every night. WHAT??!! Try working for a MTSO and then see how bad closing a store sounds. He works for a National company, has insurance, and while pay could be better, we are doing okay and able to save. It is taking all I have in me not to hit him over the head with a frying pan. He hates closing the store??? GGGGGRRRRRR
closing the store verss several thousand in medical care - anon

I will close the store for him in exchange for benefits! My husband got fired several years ago, and now I pay almost $5000 per month in medical just for 1-2 of my medical problems-this despite my husband being responsible for the injuries and supposed to pay.... I work solely to pay for medical care...

previous 30 days. Over 30 days without coverage, you will have a pre-existing. I think my state's is a year with I think a 12 month look-back period for personal. I have seen commercials vary.

My Company Sent Out Health Insurance Enrollment
Nov 08, 2011

for a family plan will be in the range of $48K+ to over $50K per year. The company pays 3/4, something like $36,000+/year,  leaving me  about $1,000/per month to pay for the cheaper plan, $12k a year, for a policy with $2500 individual deductibles/$5000 per family before it even starts paying, plus copays. I wish I could get the company to pay me that $36K to go in the bank instead. If my husband had health insurance, I could go employee alone for $100/month (1/10th as much), but he ...
